Good point. (Poorly made, but good point).

The best programmers are the ones who program at least partially because of its intrinsic rewards. Whenever I interview a potential programmer, I always ask them to describe the last coding project they did purely for fun. The best developers I know always have several projects going on in the back of their heads.

I know the author is trying to make a point, I just don't know what it is... I think he's trying to indict Windows as being non-user-friendly.

    Which it is.

But then, every operating system has user-friendliness problems. This is an area where clearly we can all make a lot of progress. I wish the article would have had some more constructive (and less oversimplistic) suggestions as to how -- instead of alienating his readers with idealogic sarcasm.

  3. Re:JVM actually has more languages than .NET (CLR) on The Future of Java? · · Score: 1
Of course, Java has been out much longer than CLR. Its my impression, though, from comparing MSIL to JASM, that MSIL was designed from the ground up for inter-language interop, much more so than Java was: so, it has lot more features for language developers. Since MS simultaneously created numerous compilers while building the CLR (C#, MC++, J#, VB.NET, ML, F#, JScript.NET, etc) they were able to change MSIL appropriately to accomodate these languages. For example:
    • MSIL has support for methods outside of classes, but C# has no such support.
    • With MSIL, you can modify a boxed value without reboxing, but C# doesn't allow you to do this.
    • There's a lot more interop in MSIL that isn't surfaced to C#
    • etc...
It seems JASM was originally optimized to be best suited for the Java language whereas MSIL was developed with multiple languages in mind. CLR is better suited for multiple languages, IMHO.

I actually bought the pdf (for $2) but their server, which had no problems when it was taking my money, hasn't been able to actually give me the document yet!

Brian sent me the pdf in the mail, though -- so don't be afraid to buy it :-)

  7. amazon censors bad reviews on Should You Trust Website Customer Reviews? · · Score: 1

A few months ago, I bought a terrible technical book. So, I went to Amazon and wrote a review pointing out some of the eratta and strongly recommending that people not buy it. I also criticized the publisher for being so lax in editing. A week later, my review "magically" disappeared from the site and was replaced by a five star review raving about this disgraceful publication.
