  1. Re:Pre-DNA Discovery DNA References? on The Art, Music And Computer Science Of DNA · · Score: 2, Interesting

The intertwined snakes on a pole symbol comes from the Bible. While the Isrealites were wandering around in the desert complaining, God got tired of it. So, he sent poisonous snakes to bite them, but also had Moses make a pole with bronze snakes on it. anyone who was bitten could look at the pole and not die. At least it was something similar to that, I might have the details a little wrong.

  2. Re:More that one factor on Still More on Global Warming · · Score: 1

Sure we know what will happen. Any system that has lasted billions of years is obviously in a stable equilibrium. We know from physics and math that if you disturb a system that is in equilibrium, you end up with the system executing small oscillations about its equilibrium point.

  3. Wrong! on Contractor Proposes Laser Rifles for US Military · · Score: 1

  4. RIAA and friends. on Germany Mulls A Copyright Levy + VAT For PCs · · Score: 1

"The Canadian Private Copying Collective, the music industry trade group, has proposed new levies to be applied to any device that can store music, such as removable hard drives, recordable DVDs, Compact Flash memory cards and MP3 players." So, you tax the music playing devices so less people have them, and thus less people buy your music. Because if less people buy music, then it's harder to pirate.

And they wonder why music sales are dropping.

  8. The size of the black hole. on There's a Hole in the Middle of It All · · Score: 1

The limiting size of 3 times that of our solar system was determined by the orbit of the star around the black hole. They therefore concluded that the object was smaller then 3 times our solar system, and the mass was determined by the orbit of the star around the mystery object. Once the scientists took a look at these values, they realized nothing but a black hole could be located within this space. The maximum size of the Schwarzschild radius is about 2.7 million kilometers, or about 1/50th of the Earth-Sun distance. Also, black holes do emit a magnetic field beyond their event horizon, so you might be able to communicate through it using magnetic pulses.
