    Advantages: density 1.6X water, specific heat ~1/4 water. Disadvantages: evaporates easily, expensive. Unknown: Probably not good to breath for a long time, probably won't support mold/fungus growth.

    WRONG. I have had to modify source code to get a program to work. And since there's no Linux driver for my modem, I have to reboot to Windows each time a library is missing or the wrong version. Package management doesn't work in this situation. One program took at least 40 hours of effort to get running. I've been running Linux on my machine about 5 years now, and some things STILL don't work right and documentation to fix it is nonexistant. Or in some cases, I've found that features that worked 5 years ago have been removed with no intention of ever being replaced. BAH.

    If you've do a lot of walking in a large city, you're likely to come across a few insane people shuffling around, yelling or mumbling. It's an uncomfortable situation, feeling somewhat threatened and also sorry for the nut's situation. The initial impression of seeing someone on a cellphone is much the same: here's some looney talking to the air, is he going to attack me?

    This depends upon a good apropos database, of course, a dubious assumption.

    If you want to open an MS Word document and you're running under Linux and don't know enough to open the appropriate editor, you're not trying hard enough.

    A command line interface, properly designed, can be as good or better than a graphical (iconic) interface in many, perhaps most, situations. Most designers are no longer trying to provide that text interface and most customers are too impressed by the glitz.

    Renaissance: mid 1300's C.E. to mid 1700's C.E.

    The Dark Ages are rightly named. The late Middle Ages is when civilization reversed its deteriorating trend.

    In common usage, the meaning is stretched to be "it's almost impossible that this is not true."

    I first heard this abhorrent phase in 1964 when Goldwater has clearly lost the presidential election and TV announcers were saying "Goldwater has all but lost the election."

    I often have 10,000 or more image files in a single directory. Waiting several minutes while KDE generates a thumbnail for each one is going to be a real pain.

    The eye is relatively insensitive to deep blue. As an approximation, sensitivity is 10 times greater to yellow-green light. Sensitivity is also low for deep red. To find a graph, look for "luminous efficacy".

    The attraction is that for many years blue LEDs were nearly impossible to fabricate. Next, they were expensive and inefficient. Next, just expensive. Now, the old problems are gone and they have the highest light output per watt of all LEDs, and they're filling a pent-up demand dating back three decades.

    It's been interesting to look at annual reports over the last few years. Companies that in 1999 put out a glossy, full-color, perfect-bound report, in 2003 put out a black & white, matte, stapled report with no photos. I hope this is a permanent change.

    I've read that fluoridation is illegal in several European countries. The typical study on tooth decay shows that it reduces the number of cavities by three quarters of a cavity per person. Furthermore, most of the benefit is achieved by having the fluoride ion in contact with the tooth, not by ingesting it. This makes fluoride toothpaste and mouthwash a good idea.

    Intake of drinking water varies widely from person to person. Some people drink a gallon or more daily. I average less than two ounces a day. Safe and effective dosing over that 64-to-1 range is simply not possible.

    A pile of money (wealth) is not by itself all that useful or pretty. But I can buy things with that money. I now have some things, and someone else now has that money which I just DISTRIBUTED.

    Did you read and understand the article? A five word summary would be "WalMart is tough but honest." I have mixed feelings about WalMart but at least it isn't a thief (re: Stacker).

    Plants have been bred for insect resistance for a long time. One tricky bit, of course, is to make them poisonous to insects but not humans.

    In a 70MPH wouldn't 2 Mississippis mean that you are blowing up someone who is roughly 420 ft behind you?

    70mph =~ 100fps. 2 seconds is about 200 feet.
