  1. Good guys vs Bad guys on Encrypted Ammunition? · · Score: 1
    I am sure this has been repeated over and over in the threads (this is slash dot, right?) but the problem is simple;

    * (Unencumbered) guns fire projectiles very fast (cool tech!). Like hitting something with an axe or driving over something in your car. Watch where you are aiming/going.

    * (DRM) guns will fire only if you are the "right" person... or something screws up (batteries are dead, etc.)

The Bad Guys (tm) are going to have weapons without DRM, because they don't really care if they make a mistake. If required, only the Good Guys (tm) will have DRM guns, and they may or may not work when needed. On balance, that may or may not "save lives". When I purchase a gun, I want it to send lead sailing. If model X has DRM and model Y just lets fly, every time, no questions asked, I'd want model Y.

BTW. I do have children and own guns. They have been to the firing range, they know the rules. They keep asking when they can go again. The youngest have a natural fear after a demonstration, it is serious, it is loud. They just want to use smaller calibres. The older kidsn soon start asking to fire the "big guns", when they are older and appreciate the difference.

For most Hollywood fare, if you can hear the soundtrack ok and see some pictures, you get the story.

Most movies don't require HD to be enjoyed (or consumed).

It will be a long time before the masses find plain-ole DVD quality (on their $129 Wal-Mart 27" TV) not good enough.

    a) This usually saves lots of space and you can partition the way you like.
    b) You know what you have, and only load what you want.
    c) You can then image the minimal "clean" install for later recovery, cleanup, etc.

This method works wonders - my last el-cheapo HP Pavilion laptop went from 63 second boot time to under 30 seconds when it wasn't burdened with stuff I didn't want/need.

Maybe we'll be smacked by an asteroid or rogue gamma ray and end the agument once and for all (or until something else crawls out of the muck to take the issue up again...)

Anyhow, the answer to your question who will be burning [Fossil Fuels] is this: who ever can get at them for an energy source cheaper than any alternative. (India, China, evolved racoons 2 million years from now...)

Right now, it is whoever can pay the market rate (i.e. the Industrialized Nations).

Let's say there is some "day after tomorrow" or "an inconvenient truth" scenario in our future... and humans are whacked back to Ice-Age times, or "worse"... Do you think the raco-sapiens will give a whit about burning cheap hydrocarbons vs "the environment"?

In the long long long run, the planet will be a cinder either way.

If you really care about saving the planet - it is a lost cause. If you want to save human kind, then you should push for high-tech and space programs and spread people all over, off this doomed rock.

...personally I'm not sure I would have wanted a world of all eletric cars when the time came to recycle the batteries...

Since most electricity is still generated by burning fossil fuels, an all-electric car would most likely be worse than one burning the fuel directly. I have never heard of a perfectly efficient method of transmitting electricty from where it was produced to where it was needed (e.g. charge up the car). Ergo, there would be a net increase in "environmental badness" to use the e-car vs what we have now.

All the fossil fuels that are economically reachable will be burned. Do you want them burned in nice epa-mandated catalytic converter equiped cars or some 3rd world 2-stroke putt-putt cars?

Either way we will eventually get to "the next thing" - I'd say let us use it up the way we are going now.
