    While I've no doubt that car makers do invest in alternative fuel R&D I would like to question the amount. How much money have they spent versus building and marketing high consumption SUVs? How much money has been spent on a lobby to give more tax breaks to SUVs than to economy or fuel efficient cars? The car makers are researching alternative fuels but, I don't think it is much of a priority.

    3. Density. You can pack more energy in a smaller volume than Hydrogen, Natural Gas, or Propane.

    Does anyone know what kind of efficiency you get, using current gasoline, in a fuel-cell versus an internal combustion engine? Is that possible? Would the emissions be cleaner?

    I still don't understand why people bash Nvidia because of the binary drivers they provide. In spite of Linux being low on the desktop count, Nvidia is nice enought to provide current drivers for all of their latest cards. They were quick to support the 2.6 kernel. If the driver works and works well why does it matter whether it's open or not?

    The problem with it, of course, is that the only way to prevent crime is to actually curtail the abilities of people to do things that could be criminal.

    I'm going to go off topic. I think preventing crime is a good idea but, we have to go about it right way. It's not the tools or abilities that are the root cause of crime. It is the desire real or, delusional that must be addressed.

    Until society treats criminals as patients we will never understand or be able to prevent crime.

    It would be interesting to know what the power consumption costs are over the life of the CRT versus the LCD TV. As I understand it, LCD's use much less power.

    My chemistry is a little rust but, I seem to recall that the IC engine vastly inefficient. If it were efficient the emissions wouldn't be so nasty. In theory I think the emissions are supposed to be mostly cold water.

    If we gave up everytime someone whined that it was 'nearly impossible' where would we be?

    The space elevator was not created by science fiction writers. It was first theorized by Soviet scientist Yuri Artsutanov. Later there we some NASA papers that expanding on the theory. You can read about it here.

    If you are going to debate the con side of this issue please produce facts not emotions.

    Actually the cable seems quite safe even if part of it "falls". Please read the FAQ before such wild speculation.

    This is secure, until the laptop is stolen. In spite of written instructions that are contrary, the user saved his password in the VPN client (why does the software even allow that?!) and has stored the SecureID device in the laptop case.

    No matter how good this implementation is if it can't be used easily on a number of platforms because of sticky patent issues then how good is it in practice?

    We've all seen how Microsoft can often manipulate standards to force people to use their platforms. Have we learned nothing from history? If Microsoft want's to regain lost trust they should free this from any patents.

    Security? Pretty dang good, but I'm not going to fool myself. If Linux were as widespread on the desktop as MS Windows, there would be a whole lot more exploits. Not necessarily more than on Windows, but more than there are now.

    That is a common yet, ridiculous belief. Systems are explioted because they are exploitable not because they are popular. Windows is easier to exploit. If popularity mattered then why isn't Apache's http server the most exploited web server on the Internet?

    Not enough organizationgs utilizing NAT. Also, many organizations in the USA have huge blocks of IPs reserved that they could never possibly use. I seem to recall reading that one university has an entire class A block.

    The problem is people putting private information in a public forum, not someone indexing that private information.

    People still 'hide' house keys under their doormat. Try explaining to them why they shouldn't do it on the Internet.

    You can talk about this and point fingers all you want. In the end it comes down to bad parenting. A bad parent lets their child take nude photos of themselves. A bad parent lets their child receive nude photos.

    Bad parents can blame music, television, magazines, drugs, the Internet or, anything else for the behavior of there child. The truth is that, the partent is between all those things and their child. If any of them somehow 'damaged' your child, they did so because you let them.

    The new school in my neighbourhood does not have any play ground equipment. There are rumours that they are "dangerous". Kids are also not allowed to play 'king of the mountain' on snow hills. Someone might get hurt. Similarly, sliding on ice in the playground is also frowned upon.

    Thus, we are raising children who stay indoors to watch TV and play video games so they don't get hurt.

    This begs the question. If software patents become more common how will anyone know that they have knowing or unknowing violated a patent?

    Say wing-ding looping and sorting method 'B' is patented and, not knowing anything about it, I create it myself. Should I check my code and all code I write to ensure that it is not already patented? If that's the case you can kiss a great many OSS projects goodbye because they won't have the resources or the patients for this type of thing.

    I find it often useful to substitue the word hard for different in Windows vs. Linux discussions. Many aspects of Linux are not hard just different. I don't believe Linux was every promised to be a replacement for Windows. Linux is an alternative to Windows.
