And I quote "Also, compared with all adults with similar levels of education, college students had superior skills in searching and using information from texts and documents."
This means, at least to me, that colleges are doing a fine job of educating student. I say this because, according to this study, those who went to college years ago did even worse on these tests.
Now will you all stop the "it used to be so much better" nostalgia bullshit.
A college degree has been decreasing in value since 1945. Damn GI bill.
My firends are all basically warez pirates in training so they managed to snag a copy of the preelase and have already seen it. They all liked it and said it was as good as the first one.
A a comment from a freshmen in highshcool who unfortunetly still remembers homework at that age let me tell you something: Almost all homework falls into 2 categories
1 Pointless assignments given so the parents would see there child doin something related school. THis unfortunetly seems to be a majority fo the homework given in most clases. FOr some reason a lot of parents seem to thing that
Homework=learning
and this is not the case by any means. Up until highschool the amoutn of homework a chjild has bears no corelation to anything grades, self esteem future etc. I'm sorry but I don't balme your child. FOr some reason parents and teachers have somehow mannaged to convince themselves that students should be doing school work for more hours a day and more days a week then workers post industrial revolution. CLose to a total of 9-10 hours a day and probably aournd 1-4 on weekends, not including projects. Is there a reason kid's can't be kids. but anyway
2 math assignments. Math the only subject in my experiance that truly needs, or even gain anyhting significant from homework.
A boycot of the riaa/mpaa would have to take one of 2 forms.
1. A true boycott
A true boycott would entail actaully going without a whole lot of entertainment. NOt listenign to any new albums or watching any new movies would probably be very unlikely for anyone, much less a (average) slashdot reader who enjoys that much more than football or clubs.
or
2 Piracy. That's the only way a boycott could work. Filesharing, vcd and dvd-r's(one of my friends has those and they work on just about every palyer you can find nowaday's) could effectively get the entire slashdot crowd entertainment without feeding the riaa/mpaa.
the only problem with option 2 is that is, well, illeagl. And many slashdotters value being somewhere other than jail.
I personally think no boycott will happen the **aa does something bad enough to make us either go without entertainment, or break the law in mass.
Because ritalin is a stimulant to most people but not those with add or adhd. For most people with add or adhd it acts diffrently, calming them down and making them act more like people without add or adhd. As far as I know crsytal meth or other types of stimulants work that way, as stimulants, to those with add or adhd.
I have add and it's my opinoin that six is too young to start mediactation. Due to current standards for studies there have been no studies on the long term effects of ritalin on young children.(by the way I started taken ritalin in the 7th grade and am in the 9th now.) AT 6 I think you should be teaching your daugher coping strategys (yes they exist they helped me immensley). I also belive 6 is too young because at that age many kids(maybe not your daghter) don't really understand exactly why they shouldn't "share" it with thier friends or do other stuff like that.
ONe thing you said was that you weren't happy about your daughter taking ritalin, it is currently illegal for a school to force you to medicate Your child against your will. I would suggest you taking your daughter off ritalin and talking to her teacher about possible coping strateges or ways that they can help your daughter.
Um how do kids get adhd from eating fatty food. THey have doen studys and kids wiht add actauilly have smaller brains(proportianl to their level of add)
1. What do you think the legal (or appropriate) uses of MP3 technology should be?
ok this is gonna be long. EAsy distribution of music fcor promotional purposes. CUstom cd's with your favorite songs(from cd's you legally own). Hooking your computer into your stereo for parties(not ever having to change cd's is nice). I can provide some more example but I'm pretty sure the slashdot crowd can provide more examples.
2. We all know the RIAA complains about the illegitimate uses of P2P technology. Since its most prevalent usage is (by the RIAA's definition) illegal use, what are some applications of the technology that the P2P crowd can use to swing the tide in its favor? distribution of opensource/opendomain works.
combating the slasdhot effect with things like bittorrent 3. The DMCA is frequently seen as a flawed piece of legislation which is easily abused and so broadly worded that such abuse is unpreventable. Despite this, what positive or useful elements can be taken from the DMCA and used to formulate a new law that would do what the media companies want without infringing on consumers' rights? THose two goals are mutually exclusive
4. An argument frequently levied at the RIAA and MPAA is that they are more than content to label the large majority of consumers as thieves and pirates. What can the RIAA and MPAA do to change this? How can these organizations polish this image up? NOt treat legitimate customers like thieves and criminals(some may be but not all of them are)
5. With laws such as the DMCA and possible future legislation such as the CBDTPA, many consumers feel that their freedoms to enjoy the entertainment they purchase are being slowly eroded away by content companies. What rights (other than the right to listen or view) do you feel that consumers should have with media they purchase? THe right to time shift. TO change between medias. TO play their media on the devices that they choose. THe ability to enjoy media that they purchase without being tracked by anyone. TO not be assumed to be criminal.
Use a "snowboard". aka a skateboard with the wheels taken off. YOu would steer the same way a traditional skateboard and to stop you just turn 90 degrees and you stop almost imeaditly(actually the board stops but oyu don't fly too far).
I rmeber reading a while back(a couple of month's) that a private comapny has gotten goverment approval to go to the moon. SO when this happens they can take pictures and disprove the naysayyer once and for all.
In skateboarding you gain speed by going down hill or pushing whith one leg.(the leg you push with is the one that goes on the back of the skateboard when both feet are on the skateboard). THE way you turn in skateboarding is by shifting your wait and putting more pressure on one set of wheels so they turn faster and turn the board. Since I doubt that an aibo could shift it's weight correctly the handles that are used for turning are a nescsisty.
It did not say that the phone company was changing is TOS to ban voip; it said that the government was require isp's(cable dsl satelite whatever) to attempt to block voip.
And as you popint out you aren't actaully bypassing the phone comapny(unless you usde cable or satelite) you are paying for service. What you do with that service should be up to you. it cost's the phone company no more when you dial a local person or a local isp.
ANd it is possibly the phone comapnies right to say what I can do with the service I buy from them (that's a whole diffrent argument), but it is in no way the phone companies right(on their own or through the government) to say what you can do on your cable modem or satelite account.
Your logic seems flawed to me. When you make a call using voip you totally bypass the phone comapny. YOu aren't costing them anything. THis is like saying that it's wrong to listen to indie band because the riia spent money on the latest release. THe phone companies time ma have come. Just because they were the only way to make calls 30 years ago doesn't mean that now. If voip is a beter alternitive for the people(sound quality and realibilty in exchange for cost) then good for them.
That's not a skateboard. IT's a scooter of some type. on the website It is called a speedboard. It looks somewhat like a snakeboard but thr is no way it oculd be used to do any tricks (at least not without a pretty major ramp). TRicks are the main reason a lot of people skate and it just doesn't seem possible with this accesory
I seriosly don't think that it's about viewers.
Alot of kids at my school(I'm talking normal average kids not the otakus so this doesn't include me) watch adult swim. And I also remeber that just recently adult swim it's best ratings ever I think that that is the case everywhere.
THE only explanation that I can think of is someone complaining about the content(think of the chidlren bs) or something like that
My first suggestion is to make sure every computer is the same. This mean that you won't have to worry about reconfiguring each computer individualy. I would suggest seting one machine as the "master" and have all of the other machines mirror that one via an ftp or rsync cron job.
You then could set up every machine to get all files every night and then give each child a account on the main machine, so when the machines update themselves they will all have the same accounts. You could do this with all the configuration. THought you did say elementary school and this all would be a lost cause if the kids are too young. Before a certain age the os doesn't really matter. I think this is a good idea and could be used in the future for computer based testing etc
AT this point walmart sells lindows pc for as little as $200. I don't think you get pc's too much cheaper than that(at least not anyhting that you can hope to be current enoguht to last a while). I would suggest going with the lindows pc's and install a real distro linux on them. YOu could even set up all system to basically mirror one master system(for software update). BUt that's my 2 cents
It's a linux implementation of windows apis. IT really shouldn't be suceptable to virii like windows is. I would really like to know more about this (the article has already been slashdoted)
I should know. I intern as a tech for their their on campus response center(basically it's where the students take their computers when they have problems). One of our most common problems is slowness caused by spyware from p2p apps. Recently a student that I helped had over a hundred peices of spyware, most of them from p2p. Having a policiy on the books and enforcing it worth a damn are two totally difrent things.
And I quote "Also, compared with all adults with similar levels of education, college students had superior skills in searching and using information from texts and documents."

Did you actually read his comment? He was saying that college student don't need a landline.

Um civics isn't requried to ve taken in 9th grade anymore. (a lot of seniors take it a slack class for some reason)
