  1. Plenty of opportunity on The Unstoppable Shift of IT Jobs Overseas · · Score: 1

    There's always going to be a market for developers at home - not all jobs can be shifted off to the cheapest bidder in the far east.

    Where I work we have a russian software house working on updating old (vba) backend software. The quiality of the code is excellent, top documentation, and the price is right, with two weeks work weighing in at little more than one or two days' work by the typical irish contractor.

    However, I'm personally not worried about being put out of a job, because I'm working on a pocketpc salesforce system that needs serious hands-on within the business - requirements gathering, refining the system, more testing with salespeople etc. I'm dead happy not to have to wade into a pile of vba to update existing software to accomodate the new system. It frees my time for doing more productive work.

    There's plenty of opportunity for decent software developers - stuff like what i'm working on would never be quite right without having someone on-site doing the work - I think the future of software development lies away from banging out simple add/amend/delete stuff, and for western developers will mean serious custimization for customers...

    Er, it is cool - i have one.

    It's called the Typhoon magic ball mouse or the 8D scroll ball mouse, and I picked it up for a tenner or so (euro) in Lidl.

    Usb too (not 2, i mean aswell...) There's bound to be others, but this one is the finest cheapest one money can buy :)

  4. Avast on Symantec Adds Product Activation · · Score: 5, Informative

    Er, freeware anyone? Try avast for example - it's free for home (desktop) use, and has free definition updates as long as ye register.

    I personally can't see what extra features would make me fork out on a costly alternative, that i can only install on one machine due to product activation, even though i have more that one pc at home...

  5. Qurb on NZ Spammer Shutdown Makes Big Difference · · Score: 2, Interesting

    I installed qurb http://www.qurb.com about two months ago, and it's caught 432 spam, not one of which has plopped in my inbox...

    It's a challenge and response whitelist system for outlook, and I'm hooked. Shame it ain't freeware, but the trial version still hasn't quit on me... I may fork out yet :)

    The spammers ain't going away, might as well treat 'em like lepers and not even listen to 'em :)

  7. Re:Am I missing Something? on Using Cellophane For 3D Displays On Your Laptop · · Score: 1

    There are already glasses that use stereoscopic images - such as the eDimensional 3D glasses.

    There's shutters on the glasses that show/hide each eye alternately, while drawing the appropriate image on-screen. Unfortunately, that means to play your beautiful directx games at 100hz, you'll need a 200hz monitor (er, do these exist?) and a monster pc... They're well cool though...

    AFAIK they're compatible with geforces, radeons, and some other graphics cards.

  12. Re:Evolved OOP on The Post-OOP Paradigm · · Score: 1
    Right. Time for some off-the-wall theory here. It should be possible to remap to functions of member classes automatically using reflecion.

    You could pull out a list of functions in the member class using Type and getMethods() and then use 1. System.Reflection.Emit.MethodBuilder to create a method dynamically and 2. MethodRental to point the body of the newly created method to the existing method in the member class. Whew.

    Type t = typeof(System.Int32);
    MemberInfo[] m = t.GetMethods();
    foreach(MemberInfo m1 in m)
    {
    //Do some reflection
    }
    See the msdn docs for System.Reflection.Emit here. Have a look at this too.

    You'd probably have to create a dynamic class to add the methods to, if so you could reflect everything in the main class and reference the new class after you jit compile it.

    Dunno how the VS compiler likes calling methods that are created at run time though.

    Ok maybe it's time to leave it as a nice theory :P Food for thought though, might help ye.

    Another 20 metres of telly cable and a tv card and you've even got yourself a Personally-bodged Video Recorder :)

    PC to vcr to (sky digi/cable)box to (vcr to) PC. Just like tha' hahaha.
