Part of their reasoning is that if I am refusing the appointment, I must not be qualified for the job
Hm. So if you're not qualified, why do they want to give you the raise? This isn't logical. And besides, if not wanting to be promoted means you are not qualified for that job (I assume they mean the new one, not your current job), then everything's fine, isn't it?
I don't know about the legal stuff, but I would assume they are only trying to threaten you, but can't fire you based on this. But then, IANAL.
THose of us who are NOT fortunate enough to live in the States, don't even get to DREAM OF cable modem at all
Well, I don't live in the US, but I do have cable. I live in Austria, and there are other cable services in the UK (I believe), Sweden, etc. So you're over-generalizing a bit, it's not *just* the US...
Sooner or later they had to find out that it takes a few days of surfing until your selective perception completely masks out ads, even flashing ones and stupid monkeys that pop up, etc.
But if they really want do these kinds of ads, people will stop reading those sites with the nagging ads, and look for services where they can pay for being left alone.
So I predict that ad-only free sites will vanish mostly, when there are alternatives. And even if not, people will probably find other means of communication.
But this also makes sense: These "new economy" businesses will have to make money somehow at one point, and that can't be done on ads alone.
I'm not sure if I get this. The M1-4 already has the spare parts on board and is not far away from the station --- they only have to manually dock it. Is that correct? With all these acronyms and numbers, I'm completely confused...
So if the last compressor fails, they still have two more tries: Fix the plug on replacement number one, and try to dock the supplies vehicle.
I know a number of clinical applications that either use old machines or are so simple most slashdotters would laugh at them. One example is a system that calculates transfusions for "feeding" prematurely born infants. This is a very simple perl program that generates a bunch of HTML pages, but it saves the staff a lot of time and has reduced errors by a large factor (input errors are still possible, even despite quite intelligent error checking).
What kind of machine do you think this program needs? A P4 at 1.5GHz? Come on, reaction times in the seconds range are completely sufficient. It's much more important that it runs reliably and is never down when it is needed. Why replace such a machine?
The other part is interfaces. It is extremely difficult and expensive to get hold of data from medical devices. So when you have managed to build such a system, you want to keep it alive as long as possible in order not to have to pay for expensive new devices and --- on top of that --- a means of getting to the data, instead of only having it displayed or printed out.
So this doesn't really surprise me at all. And it is a nice example of real good an economic use of ressources. I would really like to see much more of this kind.
It's not a trick. You don't notice processor speed in terms of difference, but in terms of a factor. So if you overclock a processor by 50%, that is noticeable. If you overclock it by 10%, it is not, even if the difference in clock speed is the same in both cases.
Considering the fact, that this page is in french, I doubt that the "yanks" (and many others, for that matter) will learn much from that page.
An english version would be highly appreciated...
Good Point. The higher MHz (and now, GHz) ratings get, the less they mean. Until very recently, I would have said that companies were just going to go on like this, because people seemed to buy new machines simply because of their higher clock speeds.
But from what I hear, it seems that people are slowly coming to their senses now and realize that that great new machine with 300 more MHz is not going to make any difference in practice. So maybe this is the beginning of a development that will lead to more useful new developments, instead of raw clock speed numbers.
You are right, but I don't think any official from record company or the like would agree. They are glad that you already own that album, because they *know* you will buy the CD eventually. And they won't be so stupid as to offer you any kind of discount.
This is simply about money, not about logic or about protecting the artist (or whatever they claim they're doing this week). And, frankly, I don't think bitching about it on/. will change anything.
You're absolutely right. People think they need this kind of bandwidth for useless stuff like TV over IP... come on, what do we have TV cable and antennas for? This is so ridiculous.
And besides, the "high bandwidth" services I know (cable and DSL) all suffer from oversaturated backbones, bad design, too much growth and bad costumer service. They'd better fix these things up before we can think of fiber in the house.
It looks like you are writing a term paper. Would you like to cut and paste some text from Encarta?
ROTFL! But I completely agree with what you are saying. I also had this experience with my colleagues, and it's really amazing how these LIDs actually manage to graduate. And it's frightening, too...

Do these posts surprise you? I mean, just look at all the crap that is posted here: f1rst p0sts, flames, goatsex, etc. There is a certain percentage of morons even here (and it's much worse one most other boards, not to speak of most usenet groups, to say something on-topic;-), and they seem to have found another target...
I know enough computer-savvy women to believe you, but that doesn't seem to be the case for many other readers here. And people with experience in IRC etc know that there are men that claim to be women everywhere, so they kind of have a reason. I also believe that there are a few women here that just hide behind gender-neutral names, so they are treated equal.
But I agree, the way women are treated on many services like/., IRC, ICQ, etc does not give them a good reason to stay. But I hope you do, so the guys here get a chance to come to grips with the fact that there is another gender and maybe learn to behave in a more respectful way.

Hehe, no, I just thought that this spelling of the word is brilliant ... and I do enjoy language, but only as a hobby

Fastest commercial supercomputer. ASCI White is owned by the US military, afaik.

Hm ... does anybody else think that this might have been a joke? Hm? Maybe?

It was actually slashdotted before the 5th ...

ROTFL
(This is the first variation of that joke in a loooong time that is really funny)
Shouldn't this be under "USA" or whatever it is called (the flag). I don't really get the significance of this message for the Internet

Even more devastating: The Denial of Shitting (DoS) Attack!
good point!
