This is useful.. when I am driving or outside i am always wearing my sunglasses anyway (for the most part). Now i don't have to worry about a hands free set and my sunglasses not fitting well on my head together.

  3. From my expierience... on Developing for Healthcare - .NET vs J2EE? · · Score: 2, Insightful

Speaking from expierience, I worked several years as an IT Manager in the healthcare industry in Connecticut, the most important thing I was forced to consider was ease of use and speed. While security is always a concern, it sometimes had to take a backburner to speed and just plain old usability.

I cannot speak for other healthcare industries in other areas, but we were a 100% Microsoft shop with the exception of our Web Server. Almost every application that I looked at in my time as IT Manager was a windows based application. I have no problem with Linux, and I personally prefer it, but not many crossed my desk. I would say about 95% of the applications I saw were Windows based Apps.

Perhaps the best thing for you to do would be to try and do some research on your target audience (Hospitals, VNA's, Single MD Practicioners, Multiple MD Practicioners, Walk-in Clinics etc.) and if possible find out what type of servers / software / brands they are currently using. You are going to get some people that will not give out that information but some will, and it is all in how you approach it that will get you that information.

In the end I think you are going to find that it would be better to go with the .Net as that is what, from my expierience, is going to get you the most market share. Make it run quick, and by all means make it simple to use.

About 5 years ago one of my friends took apart an old grill and used the ignition switch to fire off his potato gun. Everything was great until he had to take it apart to clean it becuase it wasnt shooting very far. Upon putting it back together he fired it off inside his old garage (50 ft ceilings) and managed to punch a hole right through the roof.

  5. Re:Lifespan Issues and Licensing 6 on Win2k Cheaper than Linux · · Score: 2, Insightful

You are missing the point of TCO.. when u factor in the cost of the software and the upgrades to that software in most instances they are penuts compares to the salaris of the administrators that maintain these machines.

The reason that this article can be viewed as valid is becuase any idiot can go to windowsupdate.com and patch their server box. In my area of the world a MCSE might make 40 grand a year, a Red Hat certified Linux admin might make well over 6 figures a year.

Hencforth that makes the TCO of windows less than that of linux. While it is generally true that a linux admin can handle more boxes simutaneiously than a windows admin... most companies that i deal with only have a max of 5 or 6 servers. Which one admin can easily handle no matter what the OS.

So there are some instances where linux may have a larger TCO than windows. That is not to say by any stretch of the imagination that I would ever install a windows server in MY office. I have 6 servers sitting in my server room and not a one of them is running anything other than SlackWare. But thats not to say that it may be cheaper in some cases to run windows, but nowhere near as reliable.
