  1. Re:Tie? on Apple Updates Professional Video Lineup · · Score: 1

It just makes my faith in humanity grow when I see another slashdot reader who does not check his facts

You didn't mention what type of memory it is. If the Dell had DDR and the Apple had SD 133 I'm pretty sure they advantage goes to dell.

Go read Apple's web site, in particular the spec sheet for the 17 inch powerbook. As stated there the 17 inch powerbook has "512MD of PC2700(333Mhz) DDR SDRAM" Do you even know what DDR stands for? So I think it is back to a tie if not in apples favour.

Graphics Card: Apple - 64 MB Nvidia GeForce 4 440 Go Dell - 64 MB Nvidia Geforce 4 4200 About the same performance = tie I hope this is a typo, else your going to start claiming that your G3 will out perform A P4 3gzh.

Since when are video cards related to CPUs? Also both those video cards have identical GPUs the boards are just different

A bit cheaper? With 600$ you could buy another computer, or upgrade that version of the dell. For 600 hundred dollars you could make that dell come out ahead in non-virtually every other area. As for Value, Value is defined as

i would like to see the quality of laptop you could get for $600 bucks. For $600 you can't get much more from dell, that is where they make a(and apple to) killing in customization

For most desktop users only the IE and iTunes/Jukebox would be used very much. IE 5 is nothing to brag about and neither is Safari so far. As for Ichat, The dell likly has or can download MSN/ICQ. And both of those would find a greater chance of having friends on that system than Ichat.

Most desktop users I know use all of those apps and maybe more, if not they buy and iBook and that is a whole other story. Windows XP is nothing to brag about, BSD and Darwin is. Open source is. Dell Jukebox Premium, Dell Picture Studio, Dell Movie Studio Essentials are all crap in comparison to apples offerings and OSS offerings and normally get removed early on to make space for stuff that is useful.

i am not a huge apple fan/zealot I don't even own one. It just frustrates me when people going around spouting crap which they

    1. can't back up
    2. is completely wrong
and then people mod them up just because they haven't checked the facts either and think it is true.

If they had used the real photo on the right, it would be a picture of an American soldier pointing a gun at a man carrying his child. It is vaguely reminiscent of the photo of the guy pointing a gun at Elian Gonzales when the took him from Florida in the sense that it shows one of our boys pointing a gun at a young child.

I don't mean to be pedantic, but seeing as this article is sort of about spotting mis/information in photographs I would like to point that that is a British soldier and not an American. Just a couple of things give it away.

    • The rifle is standard issue in the British army
    • Lack of American flag on the right shoulder of the solider

Just thought I would point that out just incase you forgot that there is more than one army out there

  3. Re:Clock and firmware on Apple iPod Update Increases Battery Life · · Score: 1

I have to agree with you there. I noticed on my 5 GB ipod that sometimes it would go from two battery bars to dead in about 10 minutes.

This occur mainly after it had been in stand by for a while IE over night. Given that it took hours to use the first three bars the final two should have lasted more that 10 minutes.

I also noticed that sometimes the battery meter would go up and then down and then up again, as if it was having trouble reading what state the battery was in under 1.2

I have since downloaded the update and install it and all seems to be fix atm so I think they found the problem

Having worked a for a printing house that prints out these leef lets(normally for banks, large department stores etc...) I can say that it cost an absolute furtune to send these things out.

You have to take in account cost of the mailing data , printers, folding machines, letter stuffers(machine or human) grade of paper etc..... and finally the mass mailing cost (either hand delivered or through the post office).

basically it is not cheap which reduces the amount of crap you get. Given all of that can you imagine how much you would get it is was free?

It would be nice to see MySql get up and take the big boys on (Oracle, DB2) but I don't think it is quite ready for that.

Speaking from an Oracle point of view, as I haven't worked with DB2, it just has too much going for it atm. For example the ability to do

    create table2 as
    select *
    from table1;

Hey Presto you have an exact copying of table one(constraints and all). If you add a few more characters (not commands just characters) you can move it to different tablespaces, schemas and even whole databases on completely different machines. With oracle 9i you can move whole data files, turn on and off tablespace enlarge and reduce tablespaces all on the fly while the db is running. You can't imagine how much time this and 100's of other nifty features saves,

I am not knocking MySql, I think for websites like slashdot where speed/uptime seem to be the main factor and not table complexity/integrity/constraints it does great (how many times has slashdot been slashdotted?). However, having used MySql I don't think it is up the job of replacing a database like oracle.

On the other hand a couple of years go Linux was not ready to take on solaris, AIX etal... and now look at it? I suppose you never know what will happen!

  6. It depends on A College Without Microsoft? · · Score: 2, Insightful

I think it really depends on the type of school

if it is a IT/tech type of school go for it as these students would probably love to have Linux on the desktop

if it is a business/marketing/teaching.... (Basically anything other than IT/tech/science) then I would stay with MS because these people just don't care about the OS, they just want to get the job done on a system that they are familiar with. Given that MS in on 90%+ of the desktops out there then the OS they are familiar with is most probably MS.

also consider the hidden costs like

    • retraining/hiring of support staff
    • transition period between MS and linux
    • any impact on the schools reputation (good/bad) that might be incurred
    • etc....

    • merge your orginal file back in

    • just copy you old .conf back to httpd.conf if you don't want rendezvous enable

    then restart apache

It is not Apple's fault that there is no quick time for Linux. Sorenson Media control the codec that QT uses and they(sorenson) control how the codec is released IE not open sourced. I would image that if Apple was to release the codec open source it would cost them a fortune. Add to that everytime an apple user or windows user downloads QT player apple has to pay Sorenson, I personally think that is good enough from apple. If you really want to watch *.mov files in linux get wine (or any other windows emulator) going and download QT for windows.
