Look at the age of the shuttle and most of the military jets the US uses these days. Other than a few exceptions there isn't an airframe that was developed less than 30 years ago. It is the logical time now to maybe cut back on the science a bit and put some more money into developing capability, as we are now hitting the edge of how far some of the technologies can be pushed, that were developed during the last big aerospace subsidies from the 60's.

There are two very good programs to get you off the ground.

DvD decrypter will rip the DVD nicely, menus and all to your harddrive.

Most software media players will not recognize DVD menus, but one called ZOOM Player will, and just happens to be a nice player to boot.

After you have those it is simple a question of hardrive space. Most movies run between 5-8gb so 1000 DVD's going to require something in the neighboorhood of 5-8tb. Most of the newer high end mother boards will hold up to 10 devices (CD/DVD/hardrives). You biggest problem is going to be one of heat, noise, and enough power connectors. You might want to think about is having multiple servers, with one connected to the TV with the absolute minimum required to run in order to keep it quiet, but enough to fullfill any recording you'll want to do. You then would have one or more servers tucked away on a home network where they won't bother you, with their hardrives mapped to your main server at the TV.

Don't forget you'll want to use to use your machine as an MP3 jukebox as well as a video recorder (TV shows).

While it's not a computer solution Sony does make 200+ DVD carasel players. A friend of mine uses two of them to hold his collection, and has them set up to be controlled by his palm top. He has an older machine connected in as well for the mp3 and video recording functions.

The VOIP that the FCC ruled on is not as you portray it. Free World is simply an organization that helps hand out numbers for voip so people can conviently connect to one another only over VOIP. They offer no service what's so ever that allows you to connect to tranditional phone networks. (Though they do encourge people with VOIP/standard phone systems to let others connect through them for free.) If they did, then they would have to maintain connections to the phone network and money would have to change hands in order for this to work. Pure VOIP already pays it's own way. To talk to my parents in the midwest or my buddy who is stationed in Korea, we all have to pay for broad band, there is no free ride for the VOIP! My buddy does have a second funtion that he pays for so he can call his family in Washington to their standard phone line and they to him, making it a local call. Again not free.

Even the hotels and businesses you mentioned still must pay for some sort of connection to the outside world for local calls (non-VOIP).

What happened is the power company saw a ripe plumb to be picked since both the cable company and the phone company in that area were dragging their feet, and the power co was looking for something to expand into since growth is fairly slow in those areas. So they used their right of ways (power lines) to run fiber to everyones home in South Dakota, North Dakota, Wyoming, Minosota, and Nebraska. Since they were neither a cable or phone provider they had little or no restictions against them from providing mulitple services. They didn't put the motors on the front wheels so gyroscopic effect wouldn't be as bad on the steering. Besides these are city busess they won't be going to fast to start off with so it shouldn't be that much of an issue.

For higher performance cars though, if they wanted to put motors at each wheel for traction control and lower center of grav, they could use motors that have coils instead of magnets so they could be lighter. They could also use the stearing method that motorcyles use which takes advantage of gyroscopic effect to lean the bike and make it turn.
