  1. Re:Why all the bashing on Wikipedia Needs $20K · · Score: 3, Insightful

You're right. Wikipedia is--if some of you don't already know--a very useful and free encyclopedia. It's in a whole bunch of languages and the content is all by the users (ie. you) and is very good. It's not the average 'o snap i ran out of moneyHAY ILL AX FOR IT ON TEH INTERWEB' call for help, but instead is something worthwile for your support.

  2. Re:RH9/M1.3 on Opera 7.10 Released (First Opera 7.x For Linux) · · Score: 2, Interesting

I'm my experience of using both Mozilla and Opera, I have found Mozilla the best place to be. Opera has too many errors displaying pages, and overall wasn't very smooth for me. Mozilla, on the other hand, worked exrememly well after I set it up. The only problem I have is that the site www.worth1000.com somehow changes to www.worthl000.com (with an L). Strangely enough, it's only been in 1.3 final and only for that site (vh1.com works, not that you'd want to go there. I just did a Google search on '1' for a url...). Both, however, are superior to IE. The tabbed browsing is really the reason that they are better. Both Opera and Mozilla are pretty equal though, excluding the display errors on Opera. But if you can live with those, it's a toss up.

  3. Why do new technologies emerge East to West? on Fuel Cells Promised For Next Year · · Score: 5, Interesting
All new technologies seem to originate in Japan, appear simultanously or shortly thereafter in Europe, and then after up to a decade finally make it to the US.

And why do a lot of people in the US seem to think we are the vanguard of scientific research and development. Sure, some things apear first but many, but as I said many things are developed elsewhere first.

Is it regulation, funding (or lack of), or is the US not a good testbed for new technologies? Or is it all of them? I can see many madical things being developed or used overseas because of FDA regulations, and common sense tells me the average American needs help turning on a computer, let alone figuring out one of those newfangled (read: oldfangled :]) 3-G cell phones.

  4. Placement? Go for NE Minnesota! on Making a House That Will Last for Centuries? · · Score: 2, Informative

It's on the Canadian Shield. Some of the most geologically stable land in the world. Few tornadoes also (well, at least in Duluth, its a giant hill so...) Very, very, very low chance of earthquakes (caused by the crust warping back up from the glaciers--about one millimeter a year, most of the quakes are in S MN though.) Not many big cities that could be a target in a war/terrorist situation. Lots of iron ore mines in the Arrowhead region though, take that as you see it. Or alternatively any Canadian province on the Canadian shield.

  5. I did remarkably the same thing a few years ago... on Adapting a Webcam for Astrophotography · · Score: 4, Interesting

My dad and I made an adapter that would go onto our telescope out of PVC pipe and some epoxy. We would connect our QuickCam (Color) and take pictures of the moon mostly, as the planets were small on it (Saturn's rings were just distinguishable) I have lost the pictures to many a reformat and new hard disk though. Very fun while we did it!

Personally, I think it would be a blast if the feds EXPANDED their Everquest study, such as practicing their infiltrartion method by putting moles inside Everquest groups for intelligence, or secretly picking off key characters. It would add a whole new dimension to the game.

Yeah, or perhaps purging Battle.net of dupers and hackers. I can imagine sitting in some Hell Cows game and all of a sudden 2 Barbs, 1 Sorc, and one Curse B*tch Necro come in and nab some lamer. You'd TP (Or PT depending on your stresses) back to town and find their items on the ground and them unable to pick them up. *Watches level 9 powergamer grab all his items and quickly quit the game.*

The demos are awesome! It should be a crime to not install them if your hardware supports it (DirectX 9.0 and 256MB system RAM are all it said about requirements; that would infer that you would need to have a Radeon 9700 for those with depleted logic today ;-) )

Some of the subtle details really are amazing, look closely, otherwise you miss out on all the fun.
