Of course these guys are tripping over eachother to make sure they own it cause then their current business model can continue, "pay us, fuck you".
And slashdoters are backing these creeps up. It's shocking really, the amount of corporate-monopoly cheerleading you see on slashdot these days. I can't help but wonder if posts like the grandparents are done by "public relations" for company X and then the lackies run around modding it up.
Any blind idiot can see that Verizon dude is just scared of competition, consumer choice, and being forced into a business model that takes care of customer needs, not his. But you pegged the attitude perfectly -- "pay us, fuck you".
Yeah! You tell it Bunny man! I can't believe all these people who WANT to live in an environment with one choice (or no choices) so that they can get charged the maximal amount possible by the telecos/cable companies. What the hell is wrong with people??
I want to mod you up, but I don't think it's fair to talk down about plastic so much ("plastic-infused corpses). There are very nice high quality plastics and when quality is a production value, I think you can see some really nice plastic goods. Plastic has a bad name because of the all junk made out of it -- but so would tin, aluminum, wood, or gold if people only made crap with it.
Anyway, I'm serious -- plastic is under-appreciated. The rest of your post would get my "insightful" vote however.
Overall, it wasn't so bad. It was a pretty rural area, and so I wasn't the only nerd, just not cool. Besides, there were only couple kids within kid-travel distance on my road, and then they moved away, so it was the only place to hang out with kids my age.
I've seen some shows at friend's houses. Sienfield, 90120, etc. It's crap, tripe, purile and pointless.
I have seen two episodes of Seinfeld. Both times my thought was "people think this is funny?" And earlier in this thread, some guy posted a Seinfeld quote that was causing him to LMAO. I read it three times. Not funny. TV is only good if you are numbed by it.
It's an excellent decision. I've been off for more than a dozen years now after a relapse. I originally gave it up for about 1.5 years, then fell off the wagon for a year. But since about 1992, only TV I get is if I'm accosted by it someone else's house. As for being well rested, that isn't the case for me anymore. I started using the extra time to do fun things -- and then more -- eventually, I was back to having as little extra time as when I was watching. But at least it's productive and who really needs sleep!;-)
The only expensive thing this kid owned was a HP 48gx. His father was a person who insisted everyone get haircuts at home, and he forced them to watch nothing but PBS. This kid went on to an Ivy league school, but I bet you he is unhappy about being excluded from everything as a child.
When I was little, we lived in an area without TV reception. It wasn't until I arrived in the first grade that I learned I wasn't cool because I didn't have Star jeans (jeans w/ stars embroidered on the back pockets). I still remember the name of the person who informed me of my uncoolness even after 30 years distance. It would seem that TV can have a negative impact - we were too poor to afford stylish duds, thus relegating me to school nerd status. On the other hand, I have a graduate degree and my own business. I still don't have any Star jeans, but I'm not unhappy.
I quit the tube more than a dozen years ago -- thankfully, DVDs have allowed me to see all the star trek's I missed in that time, annoyance free -- back on point though. Occaisionally I'll end up visiting someone who seems to have the TV on all the time. It isn't often, my good friends turn off the tube when I come over, it's casual acquaintances I don't feel comfortable asking to shut off the box. For me, it is crucial because I get distracted and mesmerized by it. I see commercials 1x per year, being new or what I don't know, but I can't rip myself away, even though I find no joy/pleasure/entertainment value in them. It's like that old movie about an advertising technology that completely entrances people -- what the heck is that called?
It has been said ad nauseum, but comparing to a fullsize dell is NOT a good comparison. It's like saying "BMWs suck because they can't haul 1000 lbs of concrete like my F350 diesel dualie can, and the truck costs less". It all depends on what you want out of a system.
For example, I built a Nehemia 1gz Mini-itx system about 1.5 or 2 years ago. It costs me more than $500 in a decent case (Antec Sonato). 40gb drive, 512mb, and guess what - it is isn't silent. There is a fan on the CPU, a fan in the powersupply, and the harddrive is audible. To go to a fanless powersupply setup, I would have to cough up another $100 at least. A laptop harddrive is roughly twice the cost of a 3.5" harddrive (for a 40, let's say that's worth $35). Then there is the adapter, another 15 or 20 bucks. As for getting the fan off the CPU, it's possible with a heat-sink modification, but I doubt that would be less than $30. To get the quiet operation you'd get with a mini, I'd have spend around $700. I'd put linux on it, so I won't even talk about an OS cost.
The DIY solution is quite evidently more expensive when you wish to arrive at roughly the same place you are at with a mini. If all you want to do is haul rocks, and you don't care what the thing looks looks like or how it sounds, the mini is not for you. But then, neither is a mini-itx system (which is neither silent nor powerful but costs more).
This is a great idea but I'm not crazy about "tinkerer" -- indeed, Merriam Webster says this
to repair, adjust, or work with something in an unskilled or experimental manner
The part I don't like is the explicit "unskilled"... though it perhaps fits me, my ego rebels!
I just spent 10 minutes playing with the thesaurus and, wonder of wonders, all the options sounded stupid, like I was using a thesaurus. I think the word has to be made-up to some extent. How to go about that though, is really very difficult. I think it should convey the notion of experimentation in order to get computers to do useful/useless-but-cool things. It should suggest that such people "own" their machines in the sense that they know how to and enjoy controlling/extending the hardware/software rather than vice versa. Most dificult of all, it should have a catchy ring to it.
I recall my first episode. Once in 1993, I lived in a place where the closest dial-up center was a long distance call, my computer was in storage, and I was totally broke. For 3 months I couldn't access my Delphi account. I felt so totally disconnected from the world -- it was horrible -- painful even.
That was before I had an always on broadband connection. I don't know what I'd do now if I lost it.
Consider, ENTITY-X does something really wrong. It doesn't actually cost that person any money to be wronged in that way. You make ENTITY-X repay that person for what they lost, namely, nothing. Now, ENTITY-X can do what it wants with impunity -- there are no adverse consequences.
On the other hand, let's say ENTITY-X has to pay a $5000 fine. This doesn't put it out of business or anything like that for this one occaision. But they will damn well think twice before making it a standard practice.
Secondly, for all the millions Best Buy has scammed on their BS rebates, I would just love to see them get hammered out of existence (and no, I don't shop there). I wish I could be on that jury -- yeah I'm prejudiced as hell (not that I'd say that) -- how do you say a number with 15 zeros after it???
Gosh - although the slogan has to be one of the worst, and the business owners are lucky they aren't allowed to use it, it seems like an awful big stretch to consider that phrase offensive. Sure, it ain't good english, but it isn't actively offensive -- the ruling is a bit restrictive.
Besides, bad advertising should be allowed if for no other reason than to cause avoidance. For example, I see the "Dun Rite Roofing" truck all the time around here (or maybe it's a power-washer guy). Anyway, it helps me - I know the last place I'll call if I need that particular service.
t's not like this is something new, we've been dealing with particulate pollution since before the beginning of the industrial age.
We've been dealing with particulate polution a lot longer than that. Imagine the particulate levels inside a cave with a fire burning, or any other structure with a fire pit and a hole in the ceiling as a heating/cooking system. People have been affected by particulate polution all the way back to the romantic dawn of time (so to speak).
In my (unsucessful) haste to be the first to point this error out, I missed pointing out the cause of the problem. There are roughly 1.6 km/mile. To convert km/hr to m/h, divide, do not multiply km * 1.6 (20*1.6=32).
Wow - three characters and all these mods!

Here's the "So?". Windows users seem to think it's their god given right that everything should have a windows port. Well guess what? The times are changing. Instead of crying, change with them. Truthfully, it warms my heart to see a lack of a windows version. Though I'm sure someone will help you all soon on GimpShop -- someday you windows junkies will have to go into rehab.
Perhaps San Francisco as well.
ALMOST all use. Middle-click-paste is pretty convenient. Dare I say, Aqua would be 100% more useful if it included this feature everywhere.

Tax man time - my whole portfolio is down. People selling stocks to pay taxes I imagine.
;-(
I'm no better though, I had to do a similar thing.
Well, the last two US presidential elections stand as evidence of the danger presented by "incompetent morons" - both as voters and "leaders".
Well, now I wish I had saved my vote to correct the grossly unfair flamebait for your factual (plastics aside ;-) post.

True - flawed analogy on my part -- but this is slashdot and that's par. I suppose better would be something like comparing a Jetta/Civic to a Pickup.

A suggestion -- check your links. I get a 404.

Why bother? You've seen the trailer (the good parts) -- the rest of the movie is just filler so you will spend money on a ticket.
