    You can use the 'new computer' Win95/98 disk for upgrading if you delete "win.com" from the windows dir and windows/system dir first.

    I agree that Kevin needed to be punished for his crimes. But it is not right to compare him to serial killers. He has something to add to socity and should be permited to do that.

    Kevin will go back to working in the computer field when he has competed his probation (he has said that himself)

    It does not appear to me that they are forbiding him from lecuring because he is a threat or because of the "son of sam laws" but simply to punish him more.

    Think about this a minute. Kevin is trying to make himself productive the only way he (legaly) knows how to. If you forbid ex-crimminals from becoming productive citizens what do you think they are going to do? He is not going to work at a meanial job very long before he starts looking at ways to make money though more questionable means.

    I think the whole idea of not allowing him access to computers after his release was kind of silly in the first place. This will just make his resolve to get back into the tech field stronger.

    Kevin was not a great hacker but now he has a reputation as one because of his crimminal convicion. People tend to rise to greatness because they feel driven to. Kevin has that drive now. Give him a chance

    I just took a job with a company this week that is currently a microsoft house. I had the same debate you did.

    (Apache vs IIS)

    The company desided it was in thier best interest to have both and hired me. I think even most die hard M$ companies are starting to at least look at unix style solutions.

    With all the legal stuff happining to M$ right now M$ does not appear as "stable" for bussiness solutions as it did a few years ago. I know the courts won't do anything to change M$ dramaticly ( even if they do appeals will keep it from happening for years) but bussinesses that depend on M$ are starting to hedge there bets.

    Looks like FUD can work both ways :-)

    I sell services and solutions....not software.

    This allows me to use open source software, improve it, (or bastardize it) and give my clients a more cost effective solution.

    I make more money.
    The customer pays less.
    I add to the overall OSS software base.

    Life is good.

    $30,000 for a palmtop computer, a GPS, Satelite phone and Laser binoculars?

    Perhaps whey should add a digital watch and make the cost an even $50,000 per solder.

    I guess if you are going to outfit them like borg then Microsoft would be the best software to use.

    When I went to school the question was about calculators.

    A lot of the most inovative software has been writtin by very young people. Their minds are more open.

    Every kid needs a computer while in school. Some kids need it to learn how to function in bussiness and some kids need it to write the next generation of software that makes bussiness function.

    Corporations are in bussiness to make money, thier
    stock holders demand it. This makes it hard for them to compete if they are paying more for labor than their competitors. (i.e paying a fair wage)

    I think a lot of the companies based around OSS are a little better at "giving back to the community" but as that segment matures they will start cutting costs. (or they will be put out of bussiness by their competitors)

    I as a consumer of computer products would "perfer" to buy my products from companies that "give back" but I am not willing to pay a premium for it.

    I think it is easier to boycott companies that are really bad (ie slave labor) than to support companies that are "giving back".

    (although I am open to new ideas)

    Please keep in mind that the laws that allow the police to basicly get away with what they to me were created to "protect" the police department personal and witnesses from harm.

    They just also happen to allow the police to do
    searches without having to justify
    them unless they charge someone.

    This allows our police (and maybe yours) to raid a
    whole block or several homes to find an ileagal activity.

    Police are trained to push all laws to the limit to help him stop crime (they are the "good" guys after all and criminals don't follow the laws so the police need all the tools and tricks they can find, just ask one.)

    Any time you give the police any way to make their job easier they will take it.

    You want to be VERY carefull when giving the police ways to make thier jobs easier.

    BTW had the press forced the police to disclose the information about the raid on my house I would probably be able to sue them (the police) and had my employer required me to take a drug test or I was denied credit it would be even easier.

    That's exactly what a cop's job is. That's one of the things that seperate us (The US) from countries like China. The Police in the US are public servants. They are accountable to the pubic .

    I know from personal experince what can happen when we lose rights to make our police publicly accountable.

    In Florida (as in some other states) we are at "war" with drugs. I did not fully understand what that ment till my local police department did an armed raid on my house. Because they they did not arrest or charge anyone (or find anything ilegal)
    we cannot force them to release the search warrent info. We could force them only if they charged me or my family with a crime because only then would they have to prove grounds for a search warrant

    Because no one was hurt (although getting thrown to the ground and a shotgun put to your head is a little trumatic) We cannot sue them for damages.

    Police not having to report and account for what they do is a BAD THING.

    I read your FAQ's

    It does touch on this but does not cover the problem of Freenet becoming over run with warez, porn, etc.

    It would be sad if any gains you made in promoting freedom of speech were overshadowed by these problems.

    Do you have any plans to deal with this?

    I read that it cost about $42 million a month
    just to maintain these.

    Right now they have about 50,000 customers

    Do the math...
    if you double your customers to a 100,000 they
    would need to each be paying $420 a month before
    you would even start to cover the maintince costs.

    If you increased your customer base to 1,000,000
    they would have to paying $42.00 a month to cover
    maintince.

    As I remember the phone is somewhat bulky and
    only works outside. I think you would have to totaly redesign the phone before you would get
    a million peple to buy them.

    Even then I don't think you could be competitive
    with regular cell phone companies. Your phone would have more range but would only work outside. Only people who really need to service are going to want it and those 50,000 already have it.

    Oh well....
