Apple similarly refused to fix a bad LCD backlight in my friends IBook because he had installed more memory and bent a pin inside the memory expansion. How a bent pin in memory is related to a backlight is suspect as well.
I fed abstracts from several highly cited papers in AI and robotics into this thing. None got higher than 50% with the majority of them being classified below 40% chance of being written by a human. Talk a bout a high false positive rate. I guess the publication about this project won't end up in the set I mentioned above.
Why is everything these days considered a robot? A remote control car is not a robot. A kegerator, not matter how many RFIDs and ethernet cards you slap on it is not a robot.
NASA has funded a similar robot. This article shows the modularity of their robot better.

It's small, lightweight, and gets 5-6 hours of battery life.
