80GB seems pretty weak when my normal recordings are 1GB/30min. I'm building a mythtv backend right now, and I'm looking for at least 1TB of space.
Use the 3.2.8 drivers for speed, 3.9.0 for compatibility. I hate the drivers as well, but the 3.2.8 set isn't unbearably slow
Try playing the game the way it was meant to be played sometime.
