'Screeners' of films are usually provided to those who vote on, for instance, the Academy, to decide the awards movies get. They send these people the screener copies on DVD now. They're pretty much just the film transferred to DVD...

  4. If you're a masochist, then yes... on MiniDV As A Backup Medium · · Score: 2, Interesting

I have about 160GB of online storage space on my personal workstation. That includes a lot of priceless data. I back it all up to a single AIT tape, which will hold about 200GB per tape compressed. Backup speeds are about 10MB/sec. I have Retrospect back-up the machine overnight, and after the initial back-up, it just has to back-up the changed files, which takes practically no time at all. I rotate tapes on a daily basis.

Sorry, but for starters, you can't fit 200GB onto a DVD-R. Secondly, I can back-up 200GB to an AIT tape in right around 3 hours. You just can't do that with optical media right now. Not to mention that AIT drives can be found pretty cheap these days if you don't HAVE to have an AIT 3 drive.

This is why I'll never like optical backup right now. It just can't compete with my AIT drive. I buy archival optical media for long term storage of data, but the workhorse of my back-up efforts for giving me the security of knowing that *everything* is getting backed up every night... I don't know how I could live without AIT.

I just bought a Sony Clié NX60. I'm a photographer, and I'm able to carry this handheld in my pocket everywhere I go. I use FileMaker Mobile to synchronize my Film database archive with my Palm, so whenever I expose a roll/sheet of film in the field, I can immediately enter and catalog it into my archival database. Furthermore, the high res screen is great for carrying around a BUNCH of my work scanned in. I mean, I pull this thing out in front of other people I work with and they think it's incredibly cool. I'm sure it isn't just useful to those in my field of work, but I'm so incredibly happy with the handheld I don't know where to begin. Better than carrying a laptop around that's for sure.

Sony recently announced high capacity memory sticks. In 256MB, 512MB, and 1GB flavours. Of course, the 1GB costs $880.. but at least the capacity is getting there. Granted, I wish it weren't so proprietary. Only reason I use it is for my Sony Clié :\

Don't forget about Betacam SX, which was the basis for the new line they're pushing: MPEG IMX. MPEG IMX is supposed to play older Betacam formats as well as this new digital format, part of an initiative to bring the broadcast industry into an all digital environment.

No, MPEG IMX doesn't sit above Digi Beta, but it is an important format. ... right, back to the topic though ;)

Taken directly from the article... In Data Resource Consulting's six months in business, Internet providers have halted the company's service three times, making it impossible for the company to send e-mail messages over that Internet channel for as long as 30 days. In each case, the provider said the company's e-mails had generated too many complaints from recipients.

My mistake though, no ISP is specifically mentioned. Still....

Are you people never satisifed? Do you want the FBI raiding at the FIRST sign of trouble, or do you want to follow proper channels?

No, but if you read the full article, WorldCom had suspended the service of these people for 30 days at a time on at least three ocassions before. They still seem to have service with WorldCom too... I think that is a tremendous problem.
