The Two Towers DVD Release Dates
FortKnox writes "Mark these dates on your Calendar: 8/26/03 & 11/18/03. These are the (US) DVD release dates for The Two Towers. Like Fellowship, the first date is the release of the DVD, and the November date is the release of the special edition (with rumored extra 48 minutes of footage). I'm kind of tired of the re-release game they play with DVDs - though it is nice with Lord of the Rings that they tell you in advance that there is a special edition coming out. But I do expect after the third movie for a super-duper special edition box set we'll all have to have.
Can someone please tell me why they can't just put them out at the same time? My faith in humanity is hoping the answer is not solely greed.

I'm personally waiting for the complete box set. I hope it will include all the extended versions of the three movies with all the extras, i.e greater than the sum of these intermediate special edition releases.

I really don't see much point in buying the LotR DVD's seperately. You just know that New Line will compile together all three movie's in one big massive package with an infinite amount of DVD extra's.
sure, i know it's underground, but after handing over $$$ to watch it twice, and also hitting the sneak preview a week earlier, i had to go efnet and pick up the dvdrips (2x700) at #freevideo.

I'm a poor college student and I was so happy that I could spend $30 on a 4 Disc DVD, and get a FREE (afternoon shows here are $5.50) showing of the newest LOTR movie. It was very nice walking in to the theature after classes, handing them my coupon, and sneaking a bottle over to the water fountain because I was too broke to even afford a drink.
Well I got my fingers crossed.

If you go to the link that is provided, you see the date in the poster is August 26, 2003. It was listed incorrectly as 6/28 for the "regular" edition.
We should start a petition against using the Twin Towers disaster for profit. I mean, at least they waited over 70 years before they made a movie about the Titanic.

It's the same round of release schedule as FoTR and likely RoTK too. The savvy ones will wait till they release the super-duper release to end all releases boxed set containing all three movies (normal and extended) plus extras. In the meantime, rent (from the video shop) or borrow (from friends who couldn't wait and went out and bought the DVDs as they came out).
Sure, it's a moneymaking move. But at least you know it's coming. Given the amount of creative effort that went into the movies (went to the LoTR exhibition in Wellington,NZ and marvelled at the stupefying amount of detail and craft that went into the movies) I've no problem with them generating as much revenue as they can.
Amen to that. The smart move here is to wait until after all three movies have been out on DVD for about a year and then buy the "ultimate, super-duper, this-is-the-one-that-you-really-want" box set that contains all three extended additions and tons of extras.
If you really need to see them on DVD before then either borrow a friend's copies or rent them out.
Anything less will only lead to disappointment, in the next life if not this one.

It would be convenient to be able to compare the theatrical release with the extended version without having to buy both editions. Of course given that they'd love to sell two copies of the movie to every person it's probably a vain hope.

A month ago or so I have seen the DVD of The Two Towers in the shops about four months ago - new year day to be exact I was in mainland China, and had some time for shopping. At least four different versions, prices ranging from USD6-8. As I had just seen the film in cinema I did not bother to get a copy. Instead I bought James Bond (was not in the cinema yet and I did not want to wait to see it - I found it not worth watching in the cinema anyway)

Recently one of my friends, a computer wizard, paid me a visit. As we were talking I mentioned that I had recently installed Windows on my PC, I told him how happy I was with this operating system and showed him the Windows CD. Too my astonishment and distress he threw it into my micro-wave oven and turned it on. I was upset because the CD had become precious to me, but he said: 'Do not worry, it is unharmed.' After a few minutes he took the CD out, gave it to me and said: 'Take a close look at it.' To my surprise the CD was quite cold and it seemed to have become thicker and heavier than before. I KNEW this was going to happen. With so many people getting burned on special editions, people won't buy the original releases anymore. Now, the studios are practically obligated to make special editions, which further reinforces people's avoidance of the standard edition. I honestly think the DVD market is permanently fucked up by this, I can't see any way that the studios can reverse the assumption that all movies that were at least decent will have special editions, so there's no point in buying it when it's first released. I'm sure it was a tremendous moneymaker when they started, but now Hollywood's shortsighted greed has obligated them to waste money printing a non-special edition that no one wants, and filming special filler, just so that people will believe them when they release the real version.

For all the recent flames on the MPAA and all the other assorted horrors who is really willing to levy the boycott and make a statement that will be heard, and who is ready to just burn the pir8 as soon as it hits the file sharing methods not even known to the appointed greedy enemy? I was in the Philippines over the New Year and I came across a very nice Muslim women who sold me an awards screener for The Two Towers on DVD for $2 US. I have seen the movie in the theater(obviously) so I can attest to the screener's validity and quality. Basically a pretty dope find, and the whole movie is on exactly 1 DVD(huge plus IMHO).
I also bought all 3 Indiana Jones movies and the first 3 Star Wars captured from Laser Disc on DVD. Total cost: $14 US. Arrrr Matey!!!

I'm guessing the first box set will have 9 discs - 2 for each film and 3 for extras (1 extras disc for each film.)
Has anyone else noticed how the extended edition of Fellowship was poorer than the original cut? In fact, it only highlights the extremely poor editing and pacing of the series overall.
Now I saw these movies opening night at midnight, so don't get me wrong. But this is the second worst editing I've seen for a big budget film. The worst being Ali, which is completely incomprehensible and confusing. I don't see how it got any stars much less nominated for awards. You'd have to know the entire Ali story to even remotely follow the movie, and even then I don't think you'd like it.
Back on topic, I really think editing has become a sore spot for American directors. They just can't transition between their multimillion dollar scenes.
By American I mean Hollywood directors. Peter Jackson is a kiwi, of course.

It's not just a scam to get money out of you either. The theatrical DVD has just that: the theatrical version. There are no special commentaries or anything fabulous on them.
The bonus disc only contained material that was previously available on the official web site. The only reason that they have this release is that the video market demands that a film be available within a certain time frame from original release. They just don't have time to finish the special extended versions in time, so they release the "regular" theatrical DVD on time.
The Special Extended version will have all the nice stuff like super-duper commentary tracks and loads of special features.
All this holds true only if they follow the same procedure with TTT as they did with FOTR.
If the TTT Special Extended DVD is similar to the FOTR Special Extended version, it's well worth it.
Never confuse feeling with thinking.
And it was such a let down! TWO WHOLE MONTHS LONGER. This is the cruelest joke Slashdot has ever played.

Seems like to counter this problem, Japanese DVD releases are *never* complete. I'll use Evangelion series as an example - but to get all of the footages (including the short live-action one), you'd have to buy something like 4 different editions - and even at usually 40-50 dollars *per*disc*, there are still people doing it - albeit complaining while doing so.
I dunno. Given sufficiently dedicated fans, I think they can make this into a big money making venture, but at a heavy cost (wallet-wise) to the real fans. But anyway, at least Hollywood won't have to suffer (ha!).

just goto www.sharereactor.com search for the two towers and download all the rar files. once you hve them all unrar them and burn em onto a dvd-r. Ok im still gonna buy it when it comes out, but it saves me queuing up for hours and wishing it was out now.
Was I the only person in the world that hates this series? The first movie was alright, but leaving the end hanging like that was horrible. The second movie seemed to be going through the motions, rushing forwards through the story without character development or anything resembling cinematic excitement.
You know it's a chore to sit through when you want all the characters to die so they'd finally shut the hell up.
I couldn't care if I never see the last movie in this series. I commend the dedication, but if this is a faithful conversion from the books - they probably weren't that good in the first place (believe me, I've tried to finish them[*]). Peter Jackson needs to return to making movies that aren't chores to sit through. Bad Taste was infinitely better from an entertainment perspective.
[*] Coming from a Raymond E. Feist fanatic, who's no stranger to tearing through 800 page books - provided those books are actually good.

Like a lot of people, I got the normal DVD release of the Fellowship before knowing that there would be an extended special release.
Of course, I had to buy it and it was an excellent purchase !
This time I'll know better.
So the plan is to get the DVD just before the release of "The return of the King" and spend all day watching the extended version of the first two films and top it of with the final on the big screen.

Heres my plan ... I buy the normal versions now, simply because they are excellent movies ... then, once all 3 movies are out on DVD - they will inevitably come out with the uber-ultra-collectors edition box set, containing all of the special editions and some more extra footage to squeeze those last few dollars out of the devoted fanbase ...
I buy that, and give away my 3 normal DVDs to a few friends/relatives, and I enjoy my complete collection with maximum efficency :)
I don't know about you, but here in Switzerland, we are already promised the Return Of The King on August 5, 2004 (in German). I can't say if the cover art is a fake, though.

I was then working away in Switzerland for a few weeks and couldn't resist 'Der Herren Der Ringe' (when I found out it had the English soundtrack). This meant I could watch it a whole 2 weeks earlier than if I waited until I got home.
I then pre-ordered and bought the special Edition.
Do I feel bitter? Nah.

For those who are interested, there is a "Purist Edit" of The Two Towers floating around the Edonkey network. The quality isn't that great, being a rip of a rip squeezing 2 hours and 15 mins into 1 CD.

The purpose of the edit is to make the movie follow more closely to the original books. It's amazing the work the editor has done by selectively removing scenes and rearranging them - without messing up the sound synchronisation. Now there are no longer any elves in Helm's Deep, Faramir is a good guy again, and the ents aren't idiots anymore.

When something STARTS obsolete it really pisses me off. If the friggin edition is so special, release it, not a gap-filling money-harvesting disc that WILL be useless in a few months. I like money, I love it, but I know one can make much more money NOT calling people "stupid".
After a few months, the hype was gone, and with it the desire of buying LOTR. Should they release the special edition at once OR later, but NOT releasing the idea of an special edition side-by-side the normal one, I'd be with it right on my desk...

Actually, I think LoTR is a very well-loved book among the regulars on Slashdot because they all admire Peter Jackson's audacity and vision to actually film three movies out of a book (a long-time favorite among Slashdot readers) that everyone else had said could not be turned into theatrical features.
It also helps that Jackson created almost from scratch a visual-effects team that has done amazing CGI work that rivals anything done by the folks at Lucasfilm.
It's the reasons I mentioned above that LoTR deserves its own category in Slashdot. =)
Last time I bought the first release, watched it a few times and then gave it to a friend. I bought (and still have) the extended edition later.

It's easy to tell what's what month/day wise here, but what about in a case like 04/11/03 or 03/05/04?
Of course not. Many times an unabridged audio book will exceed 20 hours but a movie is usually only 2. Granted a lot of the book is descriptive stuff that is replaced by the imagery in the movie version. Most novels have 200-240 scenes while movies have only 50-80. A lot of stuff has to go to keep the movie run time down to something reasonable, otherwise it never goes to the theater but becomes a TV mini-series instead.
You just might see Jar-Jar skating down a set of stairs while shooting up droids with a blaster. *groan*
Just a note that the extra footage in LOTR is not deleted scenes. They were never meant for the theater release but are made specifically for the DVD release. Peter Jackson has been very upfront about the fact that he thinks DVD's can add an extra dimension to the film and has incorporated this concept from the beginning. /b

I agree completely. But then, New Line has made a habit of releasing some of the best DVD's available. Cf. David Fincher's Se7en, which also featured four very informative commentary tracks by a number of cast and crew personnel. Admittedly it was not of the scope of LotR, but a fascinating movie nonetheless. That and Fox's special edition of Fincher's Fight Club were pretty much my favorite DVD's as far as fulfilling the promise of "film school in a box." However, New Line's edition of P.T. Anderson's Boogie Nights is another great one. Basically, no one has done DVD as consistently well as New Line -- with the possible exception of Criterion.
I haven't seen the extended FOTR but I have the 'regular' version on DVD. Is the extended version really cool? Is it worth getting the extended FOTR and should I wait for the extended TTT?
This is left as an exercise for the reader.

Actually, in that respect FotR was completely faithful to the book.
I agree that TTT has its shortcomings, though: laughable dialogue between Sam and Frodo and wa-a-ay too much fighting.
Gollum was great, though. Not to mention the pervy thrill I got from watching long-haired boys in chain mail!
And I still respect the films for "opening up" the books for those of us who have difficulty putting up with Tolkien's disregard for chronological narrative. At least thanks to the film I know in what order stuff happens without having to look it up in the appendices!

Of course, that does mean you have to hold up the normal edition until all the extras are ready for the special edition. On the other hand, "collectors edition" actually means something. (And doesn't cost more, at least in the cases I'm thinking of.)

The only way films like this can continue to be represented is if you support the artist. So if you want to buy 6 copies each and give them away, go for it. If we support PJ and his wife now they'll keep producing these wonderful artistic endeavors...and it'll send a message to the movie industry that people want this.

The date for the first release is incorrect. It should either be June 24th or August 1.
Forgive my ignorance, but is there any advantages in buying the special edition DVD, when we know there's a Uber special edition box set scheduled for next year? That is what i remember reading from some press release sometime ago, i may be wrong.
IMO you'll get less for your money if you buy each individual special edtion DVDs. ( Just a thought )

Especially the parts with the walking trees.
Best not to get it at all. Maybe I can make my own edit of the good parts so anytime I have 5 minutes I can watch it.
it is nice to be able to view what is on the cutting room floor, but as for me, to have the ability to see those extra minutes in context with the movie would be a little nicer. maybe someone over at sony can add an option to the dvd settings that allows for merging those extra minutes? to me that would be getting a better value, and usage of the dvd space.
Lets just hope it corrects some of the erm, "errors" of the theatrical version

It think there's an assumption in there that not everyone will agree with. I didn't think the new versions of the original Star Wars films were an improvement, and I'm not completely convinced by all of the extra footage in the FotR Special Edition, either. I'd be interested to know whether Jackson and co actually wanted to add the extra footage and didn't because it would have made for too long a cinematic release, or whether they've just added it because, like most DVDs, the powers that be demand extra material whether it's any good or not.

A week after Two Towers first came out, I went down to the local mall here (somewhere in Non-SARS SE Asia), and went shopping for some DVDs. I came across one vendor who was selling, shall we say, "advanced" copies of movies that were out during that time. I asked her "Do you have the Two Towers on DVD yet?"

Now here's what she said:
"No, not yet. Right now, all we have is a couple of camcorder versions. Give us a week, and we'll have the original with 5.1 Digital Sound."
So a week later, I came back and bought the "advanced release copy", and I've been watching the movie ever since. The quality is flawless btw.
Oh, and for those of you from the MPAA reading this, I'm in a little rice hut peddling DVDs to all my village people. Come and get me.
*big grins* I almost put a reminder on my wedding day that the DVD would be released in a month. Somehow, I don't think that would have gone over very well.
Forget this archaic date syntax of MM/dd/YYYY. Get with the program and use one of the more international formats:

This is something special for all Tolkien lovers here. When The Two Towers was released in cinemas, many people disliked (and some hated) the changes to Tolkien's story (Faramir, Ents, etc.). If you had similar feelings, this file is for you.
This is a re-edit of the DVD-screener that deals with most of the changes that people disliked. To name just the biggest ones: no Elves at HD, normal Faramir, normal Ents, Arwen doesn't leave, no "exorcism", etc. As a result, this version is about 40 minutes shorter, but it is superiour to the original release. The editing is seamless and it is amazing how the author of the reedit managed in some places to completely undo Jackson's changes and make something much more faithful to Tolkien.

I think that the main issue here is motivation. If they are doing this just to get people to buy twice, then that sucks. However (as PJ and the Weta people have said in many interviews), the reason for the dual release is two-fold:
Normal release -
a) People want it now.
b) People want to have what they saw in the theator.
Special Edition -
a) Many fans want a release that has more depth [length] than the theator market can support; hence a second release - a different movie.
b) To make this longer release takes time and a lot of work; hence the delay.
In many cases, such as the Star Wars special editions, they just seem like marketing tricks. The LOTR Special Editions however contain much more than extras; they are genuinely different films that deserve to be released separately. Anyway, if you wanted the version that showed in the theators to also come with the Special Editions, they'd have to be something like 6 DVDs. I for one just want the SE version that had more time/love put into it. Screw the short theator one, its for those who can't sit still.
