Actually Wnidow Maker doesn't use any GNUStep libraries that I'm aware of. And Window Maker is moving futher away from the original GNUStep/NeXT interface. Not that that's a totally bad thing. Most of the enhancements have been pretty good.

  2. They're slow to catch up on Improving CS Education? · · Score: 2

The main problem I had with CS at uni (in the UK btw) was that the courses they were teaching were not keeping up with current technology. This is unavoidable to a certain extent, since those teaching the course have to learn all this new stuff before they can teach the rest of us. I started in 94, and that was the first year they started teaching C++. They still didn't have a proper course on Java when I graduated in 98. Unless the uni is well funded and can afford to hire people with the appropriate knowledge, this is going to continue. As far as I can tell, there isn't a simple solution.

A good proportion of the knowledge I gathered during uni was gained from working on my own projects, hacking away til 4 in the morning on some new piece of code that interested me. Had I not gone to uni this would probably never have happened. The enivronment is as important to the learning process as what is actually officially taught in my opinion. As long as you want to learn that is.

Show me a new piece of technology and I'll show you a way it can be abused. This is pretty much the case for anything that may be used by the police/government, so I don't think this is any different. Personally I couldn't give two hoots that they are filming me picking my nose and scratching my arse whilst walking down the street. I have nothing to hide, and neither should any other law abiding citizen.

The fact that so few people I've spoken to even really care about it shows that the vast majority of people are happy for these to be in place. Those that aren't are either just your average kick-up-a-fuss arseholes, or criminals themselves.

I have been using Mozilla for about 3 months as my main browser. It's pretty good, has some nice features and generally renders everything properly. The only minor exception to this is borders around tables, which it sometimes seems to chop off at the bottom.

My only other grumble is psm, which quite regularly goes off on one, consuming all my memory and cpu time. Most annoying. But I live with these little problems becauses its still a thousand times better than Netscape 4.x.

Hats off to everyone involved. Its getting better by the day.

Not all that many cable companys are offering broadband access. And since cable only reaches about half of the population its not going to work for everyone (neither does ADSL either, but thats another problem).

All the cable companies I've seen that do offer broadband access place far too many restrictions on what you can and cannot do with your line. Many ADSL providers however allow you to network, run servers and other such niceties that are usually expressly forbidden in the terms for cable use. So, to cut a long rant short, ADSL is the least restrictive of broadband solutions. And yes, BT does piss everyone about.

Why is that particular point made? Because its Russian, or because it's an ICBM? Neither seem overly unusual to me. Russians have a good deal of expertise when it comes to space technology, arguably more so than the US. And using an ICBM kinda makes sense. I believe they've been bandying this idea around for quite a few years.

At some point you have to get rid of the kruft, and this is at least one way to do it. If anyone has any better suggestions I'm listening...
