For the same reason Airbus removed certain features from it's autopilot.
At an air show in France Airbus was demonstrating their new autopilt system which overrides pilot control, to supposedly keep him from crashing, and lands the plane safely. During the demonstration, the plane misread the runway and overrode the pilto crash into a stand of trees. I feel much more safe with a human at the controls, than a computer (insert windows bashing here).
"But the move may not be at all bad for Verizon, according to industry analysts. While the company has spent $50 million to prepare its system for portability, it may wind up gaining more customers than it loses, said Blake Bath, a wireless industry analyst with Lehman Brothers. "
Did anyone not read the article where it states that VZW is already compatible with the requirement. I am in the indusrty and as far as I know, they are the only ones!
What I find very interesting, at least with my local telco (CenturyTel - US), is that they charge a service fee for options that are already installed in the switch. Example, they charge a $2.95 monthly fee to have tone dialing. I work in the telecom sector and have many contacts in the industry. They state that it costs them more in mainetenace and equipment to still provide pulse dialing. That amazes me. So, I called to switch to Pulse dialing and was told by customer service that it was not available in my area!
This exact thing happened in the wireline market several years ago, right after the bell breakup. It was found that what they were doing was illega, according to the US gov't.

Does Moores law apply to roller coaster's as well?
The real question would be if the access will work in the crapper.
