I'm slightly intrigued by the Final Thoughts.com site, but was a little scared to follow through with the demo...

But now I'm set to wondering when Final Spam.com will appear. It would be a multi-level marketer's wet dream: all the spam, with none of the flaming that comes after (afterspam? -- well, it will still come, but what do you care, you're dead).

  4. Re:why 486's? on Hubble's Computers Upgraded · · Score: 4

There's (mainly) two issues as to the WHY:

    1. A time tested system (one that has proven itself over several years of "real world" as well as experimental development use) is a more acceptable one to them. Thy don't want to send a device into space and six months later have it fail because of a processor bug that know one knew about.

    2. As the circuits on computer chips get smaller and smaller, there is a concern over the ability for solar radiation to trigger (or disable) the circuit's switches.

I definitely saw this one. It WAS cheesy and dumb and very un-Star Wars, and you could probably give it all the various goofy tag lines you can imagine and all of them would be dead on.

  6. Re:It's all in the ROM on Linux on Palm · · Score: 2

Well, it may be TECHNICALLY feasible, but ROM is a piece of hardware, so if you were planning on having your own customized ROM chips made, you'd require a fabrication plant of some sort to stamp out the chip.

Some might say this is a quite a daunting task you've set for yourself...

    -------------------------------------------

  7. It's all in the ROM on Linux on Palm · · Score: 2

Since these devices have the OS on the ROM, you need to replace the ROM to replace the OS. Hence the mention of a ROM image in the 'Linux on Palm' article. If you install a replacement over the OS, then getting the original back only requires a reset of the device.

  9. It looks to me like on ESR Dismisses PRC "Official Linux" Announcement · · Score: 3

ESR is hoping this is a hoax, as opposed to actually believing it is. Will he retract if it turns out to be true?

His problem with China adopting Linux is purely political (which after reading the LinuxToday article is what I came away with). And though I don't disagree with his sentiment, I don't see that there's a way he can stop it from happening. There's no control group watchdogging Linux that can actually keep a specific customer (let alone an entire country) from using it.

If anything, I figure the use of such an epithet as "Anonymous Coward" would cause those who have no knowledge of Slashdot and what an AC represents to become curious and want to search out the point for labeling such an inane comment as the words of a coward.

"That was cute, but why are they calling the author an Anonymous Coward? I'll go take a look at this Slashdot site and find out... Hey, this place is cool!"

BTW, whoever posted "November 5, 1999, The Duh heard round the world," is probably kicking themselves now for doing it anonymously (what a coward!).
