    It's about 50 Gb of space. But no one can even be able to tell you how much free space there is - you have no idea how much of it I'm using, nor any practical way of finding out if it's being used at all.

    no practical way? even if I gain physical access to your laptop without your knowledge? you are reading and writing files to the drive. at some point that has to be exposed.

    would TrueCrypt stand up to a disassembly of the drive, a forensic examination of the platters?

    pfui. this isn't logic. not even freshman logic. it is a mischievous chain of increasingly tenuous associations that doesn't in the end amount to a damn thing.

    if you presented this argument in a classroom you would be stomped down flat.

    either show me the backdoor or STFU.

    Indeed, you can't expect people to understand what the GNU Image Manipulation Program is used for, how about giving it a desciptive name!

    The problem is, what the eye sees is the English word gimp, meaning crippled. It shapes the user's first impressions.

    as soon as profit becomes the motivation in ANY area of life, the quality of that area decreases tremendously.

    The weather outside is brutal. But I am here on-line, not shivering in the dark.

    It wasn't the government that ended the isolation of rural communities like ours, it was Edison and Ford, Sarnoff and AT&T.

    So, Joe Dumbass was allowed onto the internet to cultivate and share his collection of porn as well as try and "hook up" with "hot chix". Jane Dumbass was allowed to get online and post her mixed photo album of baby photos, various lovers and erotic photos to say, "This is me and I rule. I take your man. I love my baby's daddy".

    ---and so the masses have once again ejected the Geek from his technological garden of Eden and made it their own.

    a guilty plea is a settlement with the state, not a private party. pleading guilty to a felony charge has very long term consequences.

    I'm very disappointed with courts' willingness to ban people from computers and/or the Internet. I think they fail to understand the full impact that has in this part of the 21st century.

    How the hell did Bill Gates get on a list with Vince Cerf.. All he did was singlehandly pollute the Internet with spam, and lower IT standards to the point of making IT the laughing stock of the technology sector

    Bill Gates is a "laughing stock" only to the proto-Geek who laughed at the Model T Ford, so much less elegant a solution than the Stanley Steamer. But you could "afford a Ford" and so the Ford became ubiquitous.

    The PC is everywhere for the same reason that paved roads are everywhere. The market became big enough and strong enough to bear the cost. That is Gate's achievement.

    judges and juries aren't known for their sense of humor.

    least of all will you find them sympathetic to the arrogant prick -- let's not call him a geek -- who thinks technical skills place him above the law.

    which is why your lawyer negotiates a plea bargain rather than chance a conviction on the felony charge.

    When the group got back to the US, they applied for a patent and possibly as a joke put only Hedy's name on it.

    Lamarr was in Hollywood in 1937.

    How do you ban someone from the internet? What if he leaves the country? What if he tries to download movie times on his cell phone? I do not think any governing power would have the ability to ban someone from the internet.

    It's called violation of parole. You do not leave the country. You do not carry a web-enabled cell phone.

    Suits are to blame either way.. for thinking that their job was to tie a software app to one OS or the other.

    Fully half of Apple's revenues can be traced bank to the iPod and iTunes.

    The suits' job is to see that cash flow contiues interrupted. How much do you think iTunes for Windows is worth to Apple? ---particulary in the world markets where the Mac has a 2% share?

    How interesting --- and suggestive ---that Apple gets a pass on the Vista-unready product, but, if it's NVIDIA, the Geek screams lawsuit.

    I don't think the average person wants the dominant OS, what they want to to get a computer with an OS already installed.

    They want both and both is what they get from Windows. That is a potent one-two punch.

    If more OEMs offered PCs with Linux preinstalled, then more people would buy them and use Linux.

    Walmart.com tried every flavor of OEM Linux known to man and couldn't make a go of any one of them. Walmart.com had thirty OEM Vista systens ready for sale on Janary 31st, beginning at $500.

    The site is now down. Was this ever a serious threat to start a lawsuit?

    The driver for a high-end video card is still in beta three whole days after the release of consumer Vista. This isn't a lawsuit, it's another half-assed BadVista publicity stunt.

    Sorry but a BSOD is not "just normal Windows". There is something wrong either with this system or his hardware. Most likely is a buggy driver.

    The BSOD may take you to Micorsoft's "Crash Analysis" site, which will tell you as much, in plain English.

    the geek's flavor of the month may be Ubuntu, but how how long will that last?

    anyone remember the revolving-door that was OEM Linux at Walmart.com? JDS this week, Xandros the next? this is Linux marketing at ground level. and it sucks.

    And just how do you propose to do that? The average user doesn't install Windows. FedEx delievers his new HP Vista TouchSmart PC , he plugs it in and he is good to go.

    Forget porn. This is the Geek obsession. Not why a household spends thousands of dollars on home theater video and sound. The sales numbers you need to see are from Disney and Time-Warmer.

    The studios seem too busy trying to 'catch up', releasing titles already available on DVD.

    They are also re-releasing titles that had limited HD release on S-VHS cassette.

    Just more of the same. It only took three weeks for them to provide a new release rather than new keys.
    YMMV, but I doubt it.

    It's just another non-story, another chance for the geek to vent his rage against the universe. Vista has moved into the home market, where its dominance is as certain as the rising of the sun:

    I just tested this out for myself. If you received a free copy of Vista from your participation in the beta program, the Ultimate key you were issued qualifies for the Windows Vista Family Discount. How's THAT for a discount!

    Now, if only they could issue correct PID keys for the Home Premium installations...

    Speaking of which, if you were issued a bad key, just install Vista without it. When it asks for the Product Key, just select "Next", then chose "Home Premium" as your edition, and continue as usual. Then, when Microsoft sends you the right key, you can add it to your system.
