  1. Re:Usual Suspects on Quieting Your G5? · · Score: 1

Ditto, and I do have the dual -- it's nearly silent 99% of the time. If I play Quake3 long enough, the fans kick it up a notch or two; same with encoding DVDs, but they're still quieter than any Mac or PC I've owned, excluding the ones that came without fans :).

Oh wait ... I don't use Linux. But the facts don't seem to come into play much with SCO, so perhaps that doesn't matter...

  3. Oregon experience... on Telemarketers Sue Over "Do Not Call" List · · Score: 1

Oregon created a state-level no-call list a couple years back. I put my number on it on the first day it was available. Since that time, we have received exactly one phone call from a random telemarketer. When they called, I simply said "Please let me speak to your manager; you're obviously not familiar with the Oregon No Call list" and they promptly hung up (never to be heard from again).

Before the days of the No Call list, we'd get two or three calls a week.

My boss used to interrupt the telemarketers and say something like, "Look, this Foobar Wizbang sounds really really cool, but this just isn't a good time to talk with me about it; I'm quite busy right now. What time do you get off work? 11pm? Great, if you'll just give me your home number, I'll give you a ring sometime after 1am and we can discuss it further..." He has more patience than I; I just hung up!

You care because ... next year, you might need the money. And in "zero based budgeting," it won't be there to spend next year if you don't also spend it this year.

Smart, huh? No, I don't think so either!

The alternative, doing a true needs-based budget for each year, seems to be overly complex for the majority of entities, be they government or private sector.

  5. It's an exclusive community! on There.com's Virtual World & Economy · · Score: 1

So it looks like "there" world is one that will be inhabited only by those who have chosen(?) to use Microsoft's products. According to the hardware compatability page, you can only join this real^H^H^H^H virtual world if you're running some newer version of Windows (98SE or newer, no Win95 or Win98 or WinNT). The CPU, RAM, and hard drive requirements are relatively onerous as well.

So if I use UNIX or Linux or a Mac (or all three!), I guess I'm outta luck (though they're "working on" a Mac beta for 2004 ... whoot!).

Based on what I read of the product, I think I'll take my chances in the real world instead and see how things pan out.
