I was just trying to rough an estimate of how many good hours of play you can get out of a good PlayStation 2: maybe some would play more than 50 games during the life of the console, I would say 50 games (some owned, some rented/borrowed from friends) X 20 hours each on average = 1000 hours. I am sure others have opinions on their own on how long they have played THEIR PlayStation 2.
...and here is the haiku(:
a console beats a date

on the possibilities of play...
...free, varied and widely available. I personally listen to stations form all over the world, and only occasionally pop-in a cd tune, mostly when not working, playing games, running around or hanging out online, which I am doing most of the time.
I think the other reason might be that the volume of cd's have increased, but the quality of the art has declined overall, with the share of derivative music increasing. The music industry is trying to market made-up "idols", not original music and people simply aren't "buying it".
I think the article is biased and sexist, not because the author is focusing on men, but because in making his assumptions about societal trends he leaves out the Women factor. I am not saying he shouldn't look at guy's "leisure pursuits" at all, just when it comes to cashing in on these trends thats where women come into play. while guys are busy downloading music fo free, moms and wifes are on the hunt of purchasing things and making decisions about the family budget.
I just googled "women purchasing power" and found out that "...women control 75 percent of household finances and are responsible for 80 percent of purchasing decisions". Maybe so , maybe not... but don't tell me your girlfiend, or mom, or wife never tells you what to do:-)
... I am very suspicious of things that everyone likes, everyone approves of, everybody loves, and, naturally, every puddle on the planet, reflects.
I am saturated, lotr wise, to the brim - the ubiquitous media coverage has gotten me to the point that I cringe every time someone mentions the Lord of The Rings. I used to read the books every now and then and every time I opened the book I imagined the characters a bit differently. As I write this I realize the fact that I didn't remember minute details worked it's magic on me - I loved to get to a random page and discover little details I haven't noticed before or have blissfully forgotten.
As for the making of the musical - I am certain they'll burst their coffers without the need of me actually seeing it. I just want to start forgetting... for now.
Ok the problem is that you yourself see this as a problem and this could send the wrong message. Give this kid a break and simply be his friend. That is all you ought to do.
Give him some good books to read, get him a comb and tell him he is the smartest kid you ever met.
I am not against the patent system per se, but against what it may become when it grows up. It is an abstraction that has been given a real number, I would say a collection of abstractions that have been given too much legitimacy. Soon enough we'll be tossing only abstractions at each other and the 3rd world from the sun is going to make all our t-shirts. By any chance happen to own locally grown t-shirt? i mean 'made', not 'designed'. I bet the chance is bigger that you own a patent.
Any-hways, I wonder if patents have any precedent in history...any ideas? I know the Chinese guarded the silk "method", but I also know that all contemporary accounting and international trade balancing is owed to the Great Pirates, according to Buckminster Fuller. The Great Pirates invented money. Well, now, 95 percent of worlds' money is abstraction owed to banks with interest. Thats why there is always pressure for growth: the economy must repay virtually all money to the banks with interest.
I liked what the guy way above my head said that patents are as american as apple pie and baseball and I would only mention that only 200 years ago it was very american thing to chase bison on the Planes.
...LCD data projector and a decent 21" monitor would be a better buy instead. If you sit in front of this Samsung the pixel is probably as big as your nostril. The pixel pitch you need for your dollar, unless your mama monkeys the money, is less than 0.3., which means 1280/1024 goes as far as 19 inch, 21 inch being the absolute maximum for that resolution. Even better, 1600/1200 would have to go with the 21 inch and up. The rule is for a dollar per pixel width you can get a very nice monitor to get your job done.
In lieu of TV there's nothing better than (sony) data lcd projector (for 400 bucks used, 2K and some new) and the screen size depends on how tall your house is and it serves good hooked up to either playstation or xbox (either for games or DVD). Say hello to Halo.
(I kinda like the idea of working on the couch and staring at a monitor 10 feet away, fooling myself that it's just a TV and my keyboard just a tray, but my lap is not big enough for all my stuff).
They say art is in the eye of the beholder - thats where the First Matrix struck. I just wonder how many of you just sat and said wow, THAT may-be saying it all, huh. this is it. the Matrix, the Oracle, The Blue Pill, the Agent...somehow all fits together, in a weird way maps our own experiences... Great Characters. Only the machines seemed to be week devils - they looked scary, but not too believable in da grand schemes of the Matrix. I wished to see that part better developed in the second movie. Aliens, Arthur C. Clarke, anything but kung-fu, please. And...on a more personal note, I thought the Matrix was a bit rip-off on the Ghost in the Shell...with the running black/green cypher and all.
Anyway, It's not the tech-mech and the fu, it's not the technology, it's not the tool, it's the content. I've invested so many emotions in this, better be good.
The website is a showstopper. Confused, overwhelmed I certainly was by the overwhelmingly Scientological typeface. in short they are really afraid to tell me what the rules of this game are, and, here I am seriosly considering secretly regestering my mother-in-law - with the option "Full Contact" checked on.
-Just kidding.
Wow, it seems to me the left wing was damaged on liftoff and was later ripped on reentry. It probably ripped a hole in the hull and the tire blew from the heat. etc.
They better try to make it safer for these people to fly this thing.
