Sony's obviously trying to pick up on some of Apple's gigs here, and it's not workin' for 'em, I can tell you that much. Apple is really hard to mimic, thank god. Apple's iBook is a pretty coo' little machine though, yet it doesn't look like a kindergarten play toy like the new Vaios. The handle design on the Vaios alone is a complete rip off, but they did it in a pretty miserable way. What works for Apple does NOT usually work for the average Wintel PC maker, as time has shown with every iMac rip off to date.
The Vaio shouldn't be trying to pick up iBook sales. The Vaio had it's own market, it's own very kick-ass style and design. The LAST thing that Sony should be trying to do is mimic Apple's designs to pick up there sales. Instead they should be pushing forward with their own innovation in design.
Uggh, bring back those awesome little magnesium alloy cases! They were so distinctive and cool. These new cases are, well, frickin' silly:-)
According to the folks at OmniGroup's discussion boards MacOS X DP4 worked with the airport card.
Having used DP4 for several months on my Powerbook G3 which has an Airport card, I haven't been able to get it to work at all, so that doesn't ring real true. I'd love to think that it's true though - do you happen to have a URL?
I think the point here is that if Apple dropped all of its current hardware for Wintel PC hardware, it would be grubbing in the dirt like most other PC makers to sell their product for $300 or **FREE** after the MSN rebates from hell:-P
Frankly, I expect they'd earn DIRT on their hardware sales, and even less on OS sales.
On top of that, they'd be forced to support the absurd amount of Wintel hardware. 2/3s of the problems with Windows and the thing that slows down a lot of Linux users is the non-standard hardware.
This causes problems in configuration stages, OS level support of certain products, and instability do to the plethora of hardware the OS would need to support.
All-in-all, going Wintel would be the worst decision Apple could make at this point, I believe, as much as I would personally LOVE to see an x86 version of OS X for my Windows friends.

This is very true. Apple isn't just hardware or the Mac OS, it's the integrated use of both. Granted that all current Apple hardware runs quite a few different distributions of Linux including LinuxPPC, Yellow Dog Linux, SuSE, Debian, etc, but the Apple package is both hardware and the software OS.
This is what makes it quality goods, although both the hardware and the OS are quality individually.
Actually, only the iMac and the Cube are fanless...Apple hasn't yet found a way to make their portables fanless.
I don't know about the iBooks, but my new PowerBook G3's fan doesn't turn on at all unless the processor temperature exceeds 160+ degrees...far above it's normal operating temperature of around 115-130. The only sound that it puts out is from the IBM TravelStar, 2.5 inch HD, which is rather noisy, all things considered, or the DVD drive when in use.
It should be noted that the Cube and the iMacs are convection cooled. The reason that the iBooks, and PowerBooks aren't fanless is because it's a wee bit hard to convection cool something that's horizontal in design.
Still, Apple's portables require very little cooling assistance from the fans, if at all. Unlike my 500 MHz PIII Sony Vaio's fan, which NEVER turns off:P
They haven't *officially* killed it yet, but it looks like they're merging OS X client and OS X server into just plain OS X.
Server was very powerful...great alternate server platform for those that wanted to get away from NT and couldn't handle UNIX or Linux without pains. I'm sad that they're axing the more advanced features.
It's possible, but I think the last thing that Mikrosovt wants to do during the decision period of their Federal break-up case, is to look like they're trying to monopolize the gaming industry too! On top of that, id strikes me as being a somewhat anti-MS company, and I doubt they'd sell out. At least not for under 100 million, stock options, and a Ferrari each...oh wait, Carmack already has 5:)
Since Bungie is now Mikrosovt's, what do you guys think are the chances of Halo coming only to the X-Box as some sort of major initial selling point? Originally Bungie had promised to release Halo for the Mac OS first, and then for Windows, but Mikrosovt's primary motivation here may be acquiring Halo as a 100% X-Box release.
This is an interesting development. Bungie's produced some pretty excellent games in the past - I hate to see Mikrosovt absorb another good company into its already bloated self.
The X-Box looks pretty impressive, but with a 500 mhz G4 / Voodoo 3 2000 / 512 MB RAM combination on my desk, I'm already happily rigged with a very kick-ass little gaming machine =)
How restricted his rights are while on probation, varies from state to state as per their seperate laws regarding treatment of felons. CA for example, allows felons to vote a relatively short amount of time after they're off probation.
I'm interested to know how much Mitnick's speaking rights are restricted by each state - this may have something to do with their legally being able to deny his first amendment right of speech in the states he's speaking.
CA is generally more lax about this sort of thing than other states, and if the above is true, then Mitnick could possibly be allowed to speak in CA without the feds being able to stop him legally.
Any criminal lawyers in the crowd (ok, so maybe that was phrased wrong, hehe)?
The video acceleration at this stage of development, even though not running X yet per se, is still incredible. The non-standard hardware of Intel based PCs is going to be the hardest thing for Apple to cope with.
Providing the kind of airtight, ultimate plug-it-in-and-it-works hardware support that Apple has had with it's machines and OSs is going to be interesting.
This is the major thing they haven't gotten right yet in their Developer Previews and open source releases of Darwin. Everything else is insanely functional and kick-ass for being a pre-alpha OS, and I'd drop-kick any OS on the planet to go 100% OS X if it's as good as I think it's going to be when it's released in June/July.
One thing is for sure, Windows users who don't have the know-how and time to learn a UNIX style OS (let's be fair, if you're not interested in it, it can be a royal pain in the ass sometimes) and are sick of Microsoft OS's quirks, will soon have an alternative. I wouldn't be suprised if Bill gets a little huffy about this, hehe.
Nanosaur is a cheesy 3D game that comes in dozen packs for free. That's about as close to being the primary reason for buying a mac as Notepad being the primary reason to buy a Windows PC.
This just proves, in my humble opinion, that this is mearly a ruse to exploit the average coder -- by hangin' on to outdated imperialist dogma which perpetuates the economic and social differences in our society. We're living in a dictatorship...... A self-perpetuating autocracy in which the working class of coders and average lowly geeks are exploited to serve the purpose of the upper class slime.
Just my personal opinion though;) (Hehe, Commie alert!)

The two words that best describe you are as follows:
"Windows Troll"
Spend some time actually using the current Mac OS before you dis it, because obviously you have little idea what you're talking about.
