Any number of google-available headlines read "dogs fail bomb-sniffing test." There are plenty of studies which show that bomb, and drug, sniffing dogs "detect" objects their handlers want them to detect.
Yeah, I guess the topic was wandering. To go farther afield-- I've seen studies of dog litters which suggest the most aggressive puppies are the ones surrounded by the most mail fetuses in utero.
Months of difference make a difference in sports and the classroom. Why shouldn't years of difference make a difference among siblings?
That's so wrong, it makes me sad. -der than a typical Monday. First of all, the study rather clearly is about hatchlings in a given brood, so unless your kids are triplets you can't observe the same thing. Next, the reasons behind the effect of birth MONTH on sports and education are pretty much self-evident: the physical and mental development of children in a given classroom or sports league is greatest in those who just miss a cutoff date. That has nothing to do with multiple birth-order.
You don't know that they haven't changed much. You can only tell that the general morphology (often just the skeleton) of a fossil find matches a modern animal. What does it tell you about the rest?
Yeah, I hear the hagfish used to play draw poker but over 20 million years switched to Texas Hold... errr... Fin-Em.
My wet-blanket reply of the day follows. The primary mechanism for chocolate breakup in your mouth is dissolving (and some early enzymatic breakup), not melting. If you really waited around for even soft chocolates to melt at 37-ish degrees Celsius, you would not have a good time. What would matter to the consumers of this new chocolate, then, would be its texture and dissolution rate, not its melting temperature.
Your American cousins say, "Thanks, but we really do know that. We've got Reading and North Reading here in MA. Now try figuring out how we pronounce Dorchester and Worcester."
Back in the 80's I remember finding (via the nascent web) a postscript code snippet that would draw a legal maze. The code drew vertical or horizontal lines one box-size long, and had a rule or two that made sure enough edges were NOT drawn that a path existed from start to end. If anyone has that lying around, I wouldn't mind seeing it again.
On Android, for example, and for free, there's Mathmatiz and Addi, both of which have a semi-matlabish language. even better, someone has compiled R for Android. So, other than meeting the bloody SAT rules, why bother with a calculator when a tablet or "smartphone" (aka small tablet with a cellphone chip in it) will do a hell of a lot more?
Actually, the (rather inflammatory) article you linked to explicitly states that the author is NOT a lawyer. And as you might imagine, many people on this thread, including me, view a link as the equivalent of a quote. The author is highly opinionated but IMHO dead wrong.
You're on the right track. Google should blackhole every site in Australia. And block all search requests coming from Australia. Then see who starts to whine.
Exactly this. Those repubs (and dems to a large extent) still cling to their modern version of a world-wide Monroe Doctrine. They might as well go ahead and call it the "USA Imperative of Divine Right Rule"
Ok, sorry for ranting on such a beautiful Sunday morning.
Two possible replies: (1) you didn't study very much physics (since understanding and remembering units is kinda critical), or (2) try dividing 5280 by 3 .:-) And, yes, IAAP. I suppose you could do better by deconstructing down to the ISO definition of the meter in terms of wavelengths of a certain hyperfine-split atomic emission, but since this is for sailors, who cares:-)
From a data set describing the chemical structure of 15 different molecules, they used deep-learning software to determine which molecule was most likely to be an effective drug agent."
So the AI is going to turn some molecules into an FBI undercover snitch? That's some serious DNA-FU there!
Good grief. Is everyone suffering from toomuchturkey stupidity today? You muck with the waves coming in so as to force local interference effects. If you did it right, there's a node at the platform and bigger waves somewhere else that don't affect the platform.
What is the cost of fixing the leak? What is the cost of the product that leaks per year at current prices? Is there any other cost to you for the leakage?
I ditched with a friend in high school and went to a different school to visit his girlfriend. We were just going to sneak in and eat lunch with her. The school had over 2000 kids in it, and we made sure to arrive in between classes so there were kids walking around all over the place. We didnt even get in the front door before we got questioned. Somehow a teacher knew that we didnt go to that school.
Let me guess: the girlfriend went to a girls-only school.
Who uses hotmail or yahoo mail for anything other than an anonymous dead drop anyway? Almost any other service is better.
Yes, in fact this could be The End of All Multicellular Life On Earth!

Almost any residue detector would be better.

When the parrot cuts you off in traffic, does he give you... the bird?
No, rather obviously he flips you the human.

Those who volunteer are clearly stupid or suicidal. Both disqualify them for participation.
Guess that makes them perfect candidates to play in the NFL.

one certain Aerosmith song on it.

Nobody posted "....oops I thought it said 'Cylon' ..." yet.
fooey
The hexagon was placed there by the Kuiper Anomaly (cf. Stephen Baxter, "Coalescent")

You should have noted that Mr. Oatmeal did some careful digging and posted a link to atheistcartoons.com, where this comic was originally conceived.
Still funny, in a very sad http://books.google.com/books/about/Laughter_through_tears.html?id=hyLzAAAAMAAJ sort of way.

Sheesh.
See "The Psychopath Test," by Jon Ronson.
Good luck "detecting" these rats.

Obligatory: Mr. Durden? Is that you?
