The problem with this is, and I have pointed this out numerous times here on slashdot, that the 4000 deaths for Chernobyl are not very realistic and are the very lowest number and estimation one can find anywhere.
And the problem with your bringing up Chernobyl is that is has NO bearing on discussion about whether to build new nuclear power plants today, because no-one in their right mind would design a power plant as badly as Chernobyl, today.
No, but sometimes going hungry may be the best choice. Vote for a third party candidate. There is NO reason anyone should feel obliged to support one of the Big Two.
There's a lot of people here who are going to scrape by on part time IT, freelance work and occasionally installing WiFi for the neighbors, and wish they had a 40-hour-a-week developer job with benefits and a path forward. (Or actually working that developer job, and finding out that to hold it really requires something like 60 hours a week.)
Heh. I think this is becoming one of those transatlantic divides, as strong as the attitude toward guns.
Here in the UK, a 40-hour working week is considered long. We have a thing called the European Working Time Directive that makes it illegal for your employer to ask you to work any longer than that, and I agree with it 100%. It blows my mind that Americans put up with 60 hours a week. Do you do anything but work? I'm not trying to insult anyone here, so please don't get the wrong idea - but is it just a cultural thing that makes you OK with 60 hours a week (and 3 jobs - WTF???) - or do you think about it the same way we would?
If you were asked to work 60 hours a week over here, you'd probably have good reason to sue your employer.
It's basically the same climate as Winnipeg, and we use air conditioning for a good chunk of the summer. the average high is around 20C, but that's because it alternates between 10C and 30C through most of the summer.
Your air conditioning sounds like overkill. It gets hotter than 30C ni the UK sometimes in summer and air conditioning is almost unheard-of outside of big commercial buildings.
Yeah. It's funny how conservatives the world over always talk the talk about real competition, and yet when push comes to shove they seem the least likely to actually implement it well. They want the free market, which is very rarely the same as the competitive market.
Will you risk your life for your freedom as your grandparents did and your great grandparents did (I ask as a Gen. X-er)?
The grandparents had the government and the army ON their side. To try and dislodge the oligarchy in charge of the USA, you'd have to take up arms AGAINST a military that receives half a trillion dollars per year. This makes things slightly tougher.
Look at how they tried to counter Mugabe in Zimbabwe - with peaceful protest. How far did that get them?
The point is that it's the way the US is *heading*, and peaceful protest doesn't always work. Where it does, great, but if it always works, why do you have the 2nd Amendment?
What has changed is the relative power of the average voter and the rich. Until relatively recently, you could fight for your interests, and have some sway over politicians. Now, you can do that, and they will ignore you.
Adobe software and games - that's about it. Sadly Gimp is no replacement for Photoshop at this point.
Out of interest, what is it about Photoshop that's so much better than GIMP? In GIMP 2.8 (coming out in a month or two) there are many improvements and even a single window mode. Is it purely the subjective problem of getting used to a new interface, or are there still any significant objective areas where GIMP is inferior?
FF continues to have major GUI changes like the removal of the status bar, the forced minifying of toolbar icons, the moving of tabs into the titlebar by default, and the uglification of the theme, on a regular basis. They're also planning on inflicting a 'Home tab' on users in the near future, because the UX team want to turn Firefox into a 'platform' or something to distinguish it... from a web browser, presumably.
Although I agree in principle, I was really kinda hoping Mono could keep up with.NET because... I like C#. And I like my garbage collection, and I like the.NET framework. I can't stand C++ or Python (block braces or death), so how do you suggest I code cross-platform apps?
Tablets don't give me a proper keyboard. They don't give me a decent mouse. They don't give me a big enough screen. They don't give me good enough sound.
By the time you've added all the peripherals to counteract the disadvantages of a tablet, you pretty much have a desktop PC. The one remaining thing which is an advantage: portability. My smartphone is portable, and Good Enough for stuff I might use a tablet for (quick e-mails, quick web browsing, low-quality sound, etc.) A tablet is an expensive waste of money.
It requires that anyone creating a new product broadcast detailed information to their competitors, while also requiring patent holders to maintain a constant vigil where they have to read the perhaps 10's of thousands of posts day to see if anything from there portfolio is being infringed. Do you realize the manpower that would take? For a company with a large number of patents they would require dozens or even hundreds of reviewers, each of which would have to have sufficient education to have the entire portfolio memorized, while also understanding the detailed technical specifications of myriad products.
Whereas under the current system, anyone wanting to develop a new product has to do a patent search of all those patents, whose number is increasing daily, and which has little chance of finding some vaguely-worded patent that they might be infringing in any case.
I see little alternative but to scrap the whole patent system. I think it's no longer fit for purpose; we just don't need it today (or rather, we need a free market more than we need it; it does more harm than good).
Why use HTML5, and not XULRunner? XUL is designed more for client-side apps rather than web apps, and you still get a nice cross-platform app that you can use Javascript to code and not worry about memory management.
The distinguishing difference between a credit union and a bank is that banks can raise capital in the open markets by issuing shares, issuing debt, or taking on risky bets in the form of loans and investments.
And getting a trillion dollars of taxpayer bailout money.
Genesis tells a story about how everything was made according to God. What everyone gets hung up on is the 6 days to do it part. I ask you this, what is a day to God? The steps: first there was light (sun formation), there there was water/land (planets formed), then plants, then animals, then humans....WOW sounds like EXACTLY what scientists said happened
Even this facile 'point' doesn't actually stand up to scrutiny. Genesis says that God created 'light' a few 'days' before the sun, which ISN'T what science says happens. It takes a star FIRST to create a significant amount of light on Earth.
Seriously, one really doesn't need much explanation to see that the Noah story simply cannot be literally true.
Actually, it could technically be true - but it would require a god or gods to allow it all to happen using supernatural powers. And if they were going to do that, it raises the rather obvious question of why they didn't just click their fingers and kill all the bad people on Earth. It would've been orders of magnitude quicker and simpler.
It's the same with the "Jobs Bill." He knows it stands no chance getting past the Republicans in the House (hell, he couldn't even get it through the Democrats in the Senate). But it makes it *look* like he's doing something.
And even with that he's just trying to ride on the tailcoats of a much-loved former CEO.

There is nothing constitutionally protected about impeding others use of public property
Yeah I know, but the cops cleared them out despite that.
or of creating a public health hazard
What health hazard?
or of infringing on others rights
Which rights of whom are being infringed?
Sorry, but your whole post stinks of bullshit.

Chrome isn't alright by me; I hate its minimalist interface. Firefox's can still be customized to make it less minimalist, at least at the moment.

Me? I like Windows ME. It has the fastest interface (measured in boot time to blue screen). I also like ratpoison.
Yeah, that figures. They both give you a similar experience.
90%'s not good enough. 100% is.

Total noob question from me: that image has a white blob in the middle. If it's a black hold with a disc around it, why isn't the middle black?

You forgot "herb"...
Oblig. video.
Erm, why doesn't that site have regular motherboards? What if I don't want to go with a laptop/netbook (I don't)?
