Let's assume for a moment that Microsoft breaks up voluntarily into 2 companies, The Windows company for the Operating Systems and Internet Explorer and The Microsoft company for the rest, essentially a spinoff of the OS division with Bill Gates, Steve Ballmer, and most of the real brain trust washing their hands of Windows.
What is there to stop MS from buying Be Incorporated to rebuilt MS as we know and mostly hate. After all, BEOS is not profitable, and their stock and OS can be had cheaply and is much superior to anything Windows has and can be ported to easier.
Would Microsoft 2.0 with a more stable OS gather the same type of evil as MS 1.0? The answer to this Mary Jo Foley type question will go a long way towards your feelings on MS potential actions.

A takeoff on the war on drugs, is the war on Prostitution. Just like the drug trade, there is a whole industry that would suffer and more jail space that would not be taken if the trading of sex for money were legal anywhere between consenting adults outside of the state of Nevada excluding Las Vegas, Clark County, and Reno in the US.
My solution is this:
Mary Jane and Sex for Money are legal, but if you commit another crime like Robbery, Murder, Kidnapping, et cetera, then your punishment is doubled or tripled, i.e. dealt with very severely. You are ultimately responsible for your actions.
As I see it with the WoP and the WoD, you are paying for it anyway, you might as well eliminate artificial, inflated, and wasteful barriers to entry.
I would certainly have the updated resume in the marketplace, but be absolutely sure that your debt load is managable. In my part of the world (Carolinas), it is extremely rare, even in the RTP, to walk out on one position right into another.
Unless you work for yourself, you will continue to be beholden to corporate interests. Good luck to you.
There is absolutely no reason why the Applications part of the business can't buy Be Incorporated and essentially recombine the "Windows Monopoly" under another name. Besides, the BeOS is modern, stable, forward-thinking, and crash-resistant, which can't be described by Windows. Since Bill G, Paul A, etc. have to choose sides, they will certain choose the Apps side and then beat Windows at their own game. Now, of course, the new Apps Company would have an OS that works, and that is what most people want or care about.
Either the Office Suite division (WordPerfect, QuattroPro, etc.) or the Graphics division (Draw, PhotoPaint, etc.). With today's purchase of Inprise/Borland, Corel has made it's bed in the Linux camp and their resources are spread too thin to cover all of these bases. Adobe Systems would be a great purchase of the graphics division.
A larger issue of the next generation Internet is the level of control of the WiredNews, Slashdot, CNET, ZDNet, etc. that we know and love. As long as they have the ability to report the news and companies fairly and aggressively, the ideal nature of the present internet will continue in that fashion.
Thank goodness he didn't have an office on Piedmont Road.
Seriously, the person you describe is all too similar to Mark O. Barton and that is not good. I would post a link to the AJC, but that is a fee-based service so here is one to refresh your memory.

Keep in mind that C|NET News.Com is partially owned by Intel.
