  1. Travel, portability on NEC Unveils Methanol-Fueled Laptop · · Score: 1

What about travel on airplanes? Lots of people like to bring laptops on airplanes... And what about portability? If your fuel cell runs out and you need a replacement, how easy will it be to replace? Just imagine working late at night when your fuel cell empties.

  2. CDRW monthly, network backups, firesafe on Affordable and Safe Data Protection Practices? · · Score: 1

    Hi!

I run CDRW backups monthly for all important information -- documents, e-mail, etc. I do not backup software (i.e. Office, Windows, etc.).

If I want to make a quick backup, I just ZIP a file and transfer it to the computer server 2 floors down (in the basement). I figure this will help in the case that my hard drive on my workstation fails.

I also store important CDRW + CDRs in a fireproof safe. I store this in the basement, thinking that a fire will most likely start on the main or second floor -- and that fire will travel up instead of down (my knowledge of fire is not too good).

I also used to run a script that would create backups on a daily basis, and copy files to ZIP or on the server. That way, if I ever had to go back and retrieve information from a specific day, I could.

I have ALSO used cheap web hosting that had lots of disk space available and FTP'd files to their server. Probably not the most secure method, but could be cost-effective.

people who want to do malicious things to your computer will find a way, whether or not the exact code is posted to popular web sites. Software companies have the responsibility to publish fixes to bugs, especially in a timely fashion. Microsoft tends to delays patches to their programs.

  4. Supported Applications on FreeBSD 5.0 Developer Preview #2 · · Score: 2, Insightful

I have been running FreeBSD for a number of years now (ever since the 2.x days), and find it great. One thing I've noticed, is that there are no mentions of any graphical displays and applications included in the default install/release notes (i.e. KDE/GNOME support, office applications, etc.). Does anyone know why this is?

  5. Low prices on The Last Comdex? · · Score: 1

I am part of a group that is sending some students down to the Las Vegas Comdex coming up. It was cheaper, taking into account hotel, airfare, and comdex free pass, to send students to Las Vegas than Toronto (from Winnipeg).

  6. What about other similar products? on Vulnerability In Linksys Cable/DSL Router · · Score: 1

Many other products both software firewalls (i.e. for Windows) and hardware routers (i.e. my D-Link) include an option for remote admin.

If users were to enable remote admin on these products, would they not be just as venerable too?

It seems to me that home products may not require the remote admin feature. I never use mine, and I'm still alive!

  7. If you use your e-mail for business... on ISP Sued Over Suspended Email Account · · Score: 4, Insightful

    1) Register a domain. If you change ISPs, you will not lose your e-mail address.

    2) Notify ALL of your clients if you change your e-mail address.

    3) If you are changing, expect to receive e-mail at your old address. You may want to hold onto that old address for a short while (6 months?) and ensure the bills are paid (pre-pay if you have to)
