  1. Re:cut the line! on Phone Companies Bill Public for Nonexistent Equipment · · Score: 1

I have Verizon. I needed a line only for my modem - cell for everything else. I don't go online enough to justify the cost of DSL or cable. I called, haggled, and argued my way to $10 a month ($6 federal line charge + $1 911 + ~$.5 for 'portability' + tax) + the cost of each call. Calls at night are $.02. Calls during the day are $.07. I was paying like $30 for 'unlimited local calling' and a bunch of other crap I didn't want/need/they couldn't legally force me to take. Just get a copy of your bill, go through each line with the sales person, and ask them if they have to legally charge you that. Most of the time, the answer is 'no'.

I think the initial target market would be news channels or your local news. Say they go out to do an on-the-spot type broadcast. They probably don't need over 72 minutes of video (continuous - otherwise swap the memory). Plus, with no moving parts, there's a lot less to break in the field, as you mentioned.

  3. Re:I work for a Telco on Cell Phones Companies Fight Number Portability · · Score: 1
If the cost is so large, why not register the phone number to the person, like a domain name? They pay X dollars a year for the number, then they find whichever ISP (telco) is the best for them. The 'registration' money goes to the company you are hosting with that month or into a general fund.

I think most people would be willing to pay a couple bucks a month in order to be able to switch at will (and possibly save more than a couple bucks a month.)

Section 312, "Appropriate Remedies with Respect to Law Enforcement Surveillance Activities": This section would terminate all state law enforcement consent decrees before Sept. 11, 2001, not related to racial profiling or other civil rights violations, that limit such agencies from gathering information about individuals and organizations. The authors of this statute claim that these consent orders, which were passed as a result of police spying abuses, could impede current terrorism investigations. It would also place substantial restrictions on future court injunctions.

They may start caring when it's open season on whoever the 'law enforcement agencies' has a beef with. Pissed of some cop? Look out. Make one too many bacon jokes, all the sudden, you and your slashdot buddies are terrorists and they're allowed to watch you 24/7, or hold you without bail for as long as they want. The only criteria for watching every move you make is that you might be a terrorist.

It's not just plastic's price, but some of the other limitations it brings.

The article sights designers wanting to use it all over the place, but taking one look at the (relatively) gigantic seams between the body panels in the newest Saturns means it will take a lot more plastics research before this is a viable for a full body. Mirror housings, interior parts, etc, bring it on, but the whole paint shop won't be in danger for a while.

  7. Difference in outlook between students on Grade Inflation in Higher Education · · Score: 1
I was an engineer, girlfriend was an English major. I explained one day I had to hurry up and get to class and get my homework into 'the box' that was taken away 10 minutes after class started, at which point you failed the assignment. She kept asking why I couldn't just hand in the assignment later that day or the next. Just catch up with 'the box'.

Humanities students tend to be more lax about policies like this, and tend to be more flexible in their grading policies in general. There's always room for an argument.

My entire class argued with a numerical methods prof for weeks to adopt some sort of curve or something, because almost the entire class was failing. His solution was to make the final count as 85% of your grade, with the understanding that it 'might be' curved.
