  4. I wonder if I'm human... on Judge Decides X-Men Aren't Human · · Score: 1

Who actually defines what's human? Are deformed people not human?

I was born with a genetic disease which makes my chest curved in, called Marfan Syndrome. It's not horrible, you only notice when I take off my shirt, and even there it's not disgusting, it's just odd, and I'm very pale, enough to scare doctors, and my limbs and fingers are a bit longer than normal, and my knees and thumbs are double jointed so I can bend in odd ways, and I have a fast metabolism so I never really get fat, I stay really skinny, but the tradeoff is my heart could literally blow up someday... Add all that together, does that mean I'm not human? That'd be pretty cool, actually, apart from the fact that I'd probably have less rights then a dog or a cat.

Abe Lincoln was a Marfan, he might not have been a human either!

  5. But what about the balance?! on Should The Next Windows Be Built On Linux? · · Score: 2, Interesting

If for some mysterious, magical reason Windows would be built on Linux, I think it'd be a Bad Thing, not for any technological reason though, but for economical reason.

A healthy capitalist system requires a diverse eco-system, in this case, various technologies to compete, something like this would just tip the balance too much on one side. The ideal situation is that you have multiple operating systems with roughly equal market share, so they compete against each other to gain more market shares, but ideally, they only temporarily gain a lead.

I'm pretty certain the open-source movement generally agrees that different approaches to one problem, is a good thing, like KDE, Gnome, Window Maker, BlackBox, etc. No window manager should ever completely dominate the others, because then it stifles improvement.

*puts on an absestos suit* I wonder how much I'll be flamed this time for posting...

I'm not dissing RPMs, I use apt-rpm with Red Hat myself, I'm just pretty certain there's probably room for improvement, and I'm really looking forward to stuff like, autopackage, and maybe a future packaging solution (sorry for the market-speak), could have these things. Maybe it could even be backward compatible with RPM systems? One thing I'd love to see is a nice GUI installation screen, and a console installation screen, in one thing. Yeah, I think I'll just wait for autopackage and hope it catches on.

  7. Misleading on Mandrake Releases 9.1b1, New Packaging Model · · Score: 1

I thought they meant that it was going to be a new package format, like Mandrake decided to not use RPM and devolepped their own, that would have been really cool, and since Mandrake wants to be the most user friendly possible, it would make sense, but, all they did was introduce a new way to figure what RPMs goes in Mandrake Linux.

No new package format, that makes me sad... :(

I think they should break it into lots of little pieces (which would hopefully not form an alliance between themselves) because then it would allow for smaller companies to grow. But I agree that forcing machine makers to shop Windows, or any other OS for that matter, by threatening them with punishment should be made illegal. It's corporate bullying. If Windows is the rich bully, what does that make Linux or Mac OS X, I wonder? The geek and the artistic kid?
