No. Nothing requires this. Palm can use the same interface other vendors use to interact with an iTunes music library, and wow, they have no issues at all! Palm is creating its own issues all by itself.
The XML file that details an iTunes music library contains everything about that library. What more does someone need? How is this creating a second-class citizen?
Inviting a contract violation by... providing a 3rd party API in the form of an XML file detailing *everything* about a music library? One that is used by several other vendors just fine?
I will refer you to the huge overwhelming percentage of Apple OS software that is "borrowed" from open source.
Who is getting a free ride?
This is a horrible analogy to draw and discredits your argument.
The word borrowed can be used without quotes, as the BSD-style (and other similar licenses) allow for it; don't play silly games. The difference is, that code was FREELY given away for others to use, including Apple. In no way has Apple told anyone "here, fake our USB ID"; in fact, they have an alternate mechanism for allowing third-party devices to access the iTunes library on a customer's computer. Why haven't they gone that route?
It isn't that thinking is a burden, it's that thinking could be reserved for, I don't know, complex tasks that have more meaning than getting music onto your portable music player. Please explain to me the advantage of requiring "thinking" to listen to the music you want?
Really? I own a wireless Mighty Mouse, and the 2-button feature works fine without having to do what you suggest is necessary. I think it works exactly as advertised.
Grandparent is probably confusing America with the rest of humanity; it's a common mistake here. Nothing outside our boarders means a damn unless they threaten some drunk's dad;)
How does vapourware apply to Boxee? It is a real product, with real support, run by who knows how many users? Try to do a little research next time before proving to all us readers just how ill-informed you are.
All the Boston-area media are atwitter with the possibility of further pointing out the dire status of Massachusetts' public coffers. This matters more to them than some "boring" privacy news angle.
The police stay in their cars for one simple reason: revenue generation. There is no additional safety in having a police car cruising around with the cop inside staying on the lookout for an errant driver to slap with a $$$ ticket. See, he's too busy looking for that revenue than to be concerned about the area he's supposed to be patrolling.
Some municipal services exist and run at a loss for the benefit of society IN GENERAL, meaning, NOT specifically you. The costs are spread around to minimize any one segment of the population being disproportionately penalized. Things like subways are a perfect example; ticket sales alone to riders could possibly rise above the point where its feasible for those riders to cover.
You are paying for a functioning society. If you don't want to, please feel free to go off in the wilderness and stop taking part in OUR society, thanks.
Why would telecom companies exit the ISP business when in no way would they be prevented from servicing those interested in higher bandwidth and lack of content filters? A government funded service would compete with existing services. When Netzero and Juno began offering free service, you didn't see the RBOCs throw up their hands and say "free internet, we can't compete with that, lets pack up our DSL networks and go home!"
Who said they wanted to download the movie via BitTorrent and watch it without paying? I think every comment in this thread consists of consumers who want to watch a PURCHASED movie in the media format of their choosing. Strawmen sure are easy to knock down, aren't they?
Why would anyone engage in sexual activity before marriage is completely beyond me. Non of these issues would happen if people just behave.
Uhh... you're aware that this idea is a relatively recent phenomenon, correct? In all of human history, the concepts of "sex" and "marriage" had only a casual relationship to each other.
Are you seriously linking pre-marital sex to things such as sexual abuse? I would love to see your research on the subject.
Except that in this case, frequent users DON'T bring in more money. Not that I support Comcast's latest decision, but you can't draw a strict parallel here.
Regardless of how you think the Earth got here, you have to believe either matter (or some elementary particle, dimension, etc.) always existed or God always existed and created that matter.
Why do you believe there are only those two options? Locking out other possibilities actively being explored by physicists is basically screwing your eyes shut and shouting "LA LA LA CAN'T HEAR YOU".
Actually.. it's complete nonsense. Mixing evolution with cosmology with abiogenesis is just a distraction, a smokescreen. If you accept change over time adaptations, then you accept evolution. The so called "micro" and "macro" evolution are one and the same, just over different time scales.
Are you going to provide evidence for any of this, twitter? You can't make such grand pronouncements of "how things are" without backing up your assertions with trustworthy citations. As someone who has worked in corporate environments most of his life, I tend to see the reverse of your statement in effect. Not to say I wouldn't LIKE to see it, but I don't.
I think you missed part of his point. Someone who licenses his code under the BSDL doesn't *care* if his code lands in another project, open OR closed. Its being used, which is a net positive. HIS project is still free and available.
Any griping I've seen in the past about BSDL code ending up under GPL is when someone rips out the attribution, which is another matter altogether.
Oh the bitterness, the salty jealousy, it's soooooo delicious.
Just admit the Pats are the best team in the entire NFL. Everyone loves to hate the winner. Grow up.
Wrong. NH makes most of its revenue from property taxes and tourism. Try to get at least one simple fact right.

More electricity??? What gibberish is this? You can't be serious. Please don't comment on what you don't understand.

Please explain how water, roads and electricity companies can "advance over time" in any similar way to Internet access?
It would be best to stick to the car analogies that Slashdot is so fond of if you're going to draw incompatible comparisons.
Bad analogy, while this exists.

Because to some "conservative" voters, pork is defined as any spending at all, especially any spending that doesn't directly enrich them personally.
