Quick, rabid Linux advocate patrol to the rescue! Didn't you listen to Johnny? Say something bad about Linux, and somebody will pop up spouting fire and brimstone about how some other OS sucks worse. Grow up, pal. You're not doing your OS of choice any favors. Not to mention XWorld doesn't have the number of users compared to EFnet:)
Blind advocacy such as this gets the Linux movement *nowhere*. A thread earlier tore into a FreeBSD user because he voiced his opinion that FreeBSD was a better server solution for him; rabid Linux advocates said they'd believe it if it were backed with facts. Well.. where are the Linux facts? Don't throw stones through your glass walls, ladies and gentlemen.
Your assumption that Linux will surpass other operating systems in scalability is based on the faulty logic that all other operating systems will halt development. Even Microsoft doesn't do this; they push ahead (even if slowly and possibly badly) trying to keep up with the rest of the industry. Sun, FreeBSD, NetBSD, Be.. they *all* do this. Linux is a moving target and so is everybody else.
Wow, the rabid Linux advocates are coming out of the woodwork today. FreeBSD doesn't run on the Alpha? Sorry, it sure does. Has for several versions now, actually. Get your facts straight before you post and look like an utter fool.
Here's a free clue-pon for you, my ignorant Linux advocate.. it's well-known that the backend is driven by Solaris running on a Starfire system. The website is nothing compared to the huge database that backs the website. Research before you open your cakehole again.
Linux runs on a small number of sun4 machines (sun4, sun4m, and some sun4c, not sun4l or sun4d); UltraPenguin just isn't there for the sun4u hardware. I'll take Solaris on my UE450's any day of the week, thank you very much. No slam against Linux in general, but please get your facts straight before you spout this nonsense.
That's fine.. by your mentality, I'll happy ignore all GPL licenses from here on out and incorporate GPL'd software into my own works without infecting my own code. After all, you said it was okay to ignore Corel's license; why not ignore the GPL as well?
Really? So you're fairly new to the industry.. If your total background consists of Linux, OSF/1 (or DEC UNIX or Tru64 or the name of the week), and AIX, you have missed a large chunk of the UNIX world my friend.
First opened up for commercial access five years ago? Sorry chum, I've had Internet access long before that and there were "commercial" ventures on the network long before me.
I sure hope not. Competition drives developers on to do greater and better things. Linux and FreeBSD continually play leapfrog; would you prefer to put that at an end?
No, GNU has given a few tools. Most GNU tools are recreations of existing UCB or even AT&T tools just to put the GPL on them. Please work with facts if you're going to debate.
Now if rabid Linux advocates would stop deriding others in pushing *their* OS of choice, perhaps more would take them seriously. Don't start tossing rocks yet boys while you still have glass walls.
If you want stable USB code, stop whining and code it yourself. The specs for OHCI are available; even UHCI specs are available for a price. If you're too lazy to do it yourself, just use NetBSD which has had working and stable USB code for months before Linux did.
Linux is not based on Unix. Linux is a Unix clone, taking elements from both BSD and System V. Don't make a huge senseless leap of logic to presume that Linux has been around since 1969.
You'd trade the BSOD for the inevitable kernel panic when a packet kiddie finds yet another way to remotely bust the Linux kernel? Either way, I know I'm not too keen on inserting computing devices into my own body.
This assumes BSD development is at a standstill. Untrue. Why is it always said "Linux will soon have the upper hand over {FreeBSD, Solaris, NT, AIX, etc}!"? Do these people assume that all other operating systems no longer engage in active research and development? Please.
NAT (and his friend NAPT) is junk and a stopgap measure at best. It breaks the "end-to-end" nature of true public networking. Try fitting IPSec onto a network structure with NA(P)T gateways all over the place. How do you insure where your packets are really coming from at that point? I hate the idea of a gateway groveling around at layer seven and changing things around (such as FTP) to make it work "correctly".
Most true audiophiles will be able to tell the difference between 168Kbps joint-stereo MP3s and CDs. There are specific things to listen for, that's all. Same reason I can tell the difference between and MD digitally copied from a CD (which still sounds better than a 128Kbps MP3, btw).
Sorry to burst your bubble of twisted reality, but it took a while and a lot of cajoling to get Matrox to release enough information for the damned card to work with XFree86.
You mean besides nearly *all* Digital 8mm cameras on the market currently? Check Crutchfield's catalog.

Gee, I thought Slashdot was "News for Nerds, Stuff that matters", not "News for rabid Linux cheerleaders".

People with those huge vans with televisions in them (example, Ford Conversion vans, some Mercury Navigators).
Not SETI@Home, the real quote involved LSD and BSD.
Um, no. Where did it say you could relicense somebody else's code?

Appearently, you've never had a submission ignored for a while only to come up under another person's name a day (or days) later.
