Yes, you DO need permission to run the client on computers/networks/etc not owned by you. As stated in theOfficial distributed.net policies.
I ran into this same problem about 3 years ago. I was running a d.net client on my school's DNS server. Well at the time I didn't know it was the DNS. (Hey, the school gave us accounts to play around with for our Unix class.) I ended up causing a massive network slow down for about a week. Granted the DNS was ancient piece of crap, but it was working fine until I got a hold of it;). I guess I should also note that I had the nice'd the client to run at top priority effectively slowing all other services down. Ooops. I learned my lesson that day when the Sys Adim grabbed me in the parking lot after class and told me to take the client off the server. Since I was a student (and didn't know I was causing problems campus wide) they were not going to punish me in anyway. I was lucky. I also should have read the Terms of Use before I went Gun-Ho and installed the client.
...A year ago, the Cube was being
hyped like crazy. What happened?
The price is what happened. How can Apple expect to make sales with a $2000+ computer? Dell/Compaq/HP/etc sells them for about a 1/4 of the price. Most common users don't care about inovation and style... they care about getting their email, web pages loaded quickly and price. Bottom Line. Enthusiasts may enjoy this sort of "toy" but, most steer clear once they see the price.
... to encourage people to get the source and put it Gnutella ?
C'mon people, this is not open source, they were selling the source and are now cancelling the effort (who knows why). But by making little comments like that, you're making us look like a community of software pirates not open source advocates !
I'd have to agree. If Sun has decided to close up shop on Solaris 8 source then we should respect it.We should not act like a bunch of kids and post it up where ever we can just because we are upset with Sun.
I believe the MS developers suite was $25. (ie. 5 CDs at $5 a disk. what a joke...)
I'll just stick with Borland products thanks.
I use a windows port of Vi for all my text editing stuff in NT. Although trying to write a paper with it becomes a bit tough. We are blind to the Worlds within us
I also am an SSU student... and I was a bit shocked at how fast they decided to go with the Microsoft agreement.
Also,at how hard they were pushing students to buy it. It just seemed kind of odd. Maybe that was part of the agreement(?)
Ordinarly, I stick with Linux and GNU stuff... however, Linux doesn't have the best of Office* tools... yet. So, I figure I could just pick a copy of MS Office. 5 dollars? no biggie. Although, when I was handed that contract (BS) I was not too suprised that MS would force that on us... However, when I saw that I got no printed docs or anything, I came to same conclusion you did... It did not cost them $5 to print up all those CDs hence NOT Free software. Oh well.
(* By office tools I mean word processors, spread sheets, etc... and yes I am aware of gnumeric, Star Office, etc.)
From all the great puns of political and historical figures to the witty remarks of Homer himself.
The Simpsons the greatest TV show ever...
I just hope that they go out with style ( like the final episode of Seinfield and M*A*S*H) rather than just fade away like other great TV shows. (aka I Love Lucy).
I do agree that Open Source is not totally to blame here. However, since the source is open it does make it easier for the user to modify the client to his/her likings. So, open source does play a role in the "cheating" in Q3. Although, I would not go as far as to say that Q3 should go closed source and that will solve the problem.
I think that the main cause of the "cheating" is the honesty and integrity of the players of Q3. Take Diablo/Battle.net for example: When it first started cheating was common place. (And so was Player Killing). Eventually, all the players who despised cheating and player killing started lists of known offenders. They also started games that were password protected so that only "trusted" honest players would be given the password to such games.
So, why doesn't the Q3 players try the same... See if it improves the quality of play. Then if it does not... Maybe seek another solution.
I would really save the closed source option for last. It would be a real shame for Q3 to go closed source.
Yeah, Cannibal Corpse used to be great... Then Barnes left the band and joining a crappy one. Oh well, still got The Bleeding and Butchered... to listen to. I wouldn't call them hardcore. They are stricly just straight death metal.. blast beats and tremlo.
Filth... Not a bad choice. They used to be great but have lost there quality sound they used have on Dusk... Loved the cover of Hallowed be Thy Name they did. Other than that thier new stuff doesn' entice me that much.
Sad but true, Suck does have a point. Business are basicly raping Open Source. It's what I have been saying: "Computing is wonderful and exciting world... Until businesses get involved."
However, I think that Suck is blowing it a bit out of proportion... Which they always do. Also whatever happened to Suck being funny? When did they get so political? Oh Well... Guess they too are jumping on the Linux bandwagon.
Its a direct hit captain... shall I fire again?
No Mr. Sulu they are already dead.

What the hell is a command prompt? It must be part of that "virial OS" that Microsoft keeps warning me about.

Wow... This takes me back. I wasted soooo many hours during my freshman and sophmore year of college playing Quake I/II online.

I realized I put Q3 through out the above comment. I meant Q1... I guess that's what I get for not clicking preview.
I have been up for ~24hrs. so I am a bit tired.

I have been mostly jamming to Machine Head's new one as of late... Dam good stuff.

Earth Crisis, Hatebreed, Strife, Destruction33, All out War, Snapcase, Buried Alive, etc...
Then you will really know what hardcore is.

-Luke... I am your father.
I couldn't agree more.
Also, how come they don't run tese test for longer? 5 Days? Come on... Let the servers run for 2 or 3 weeks them run the tests...
Outstanding...
That is what should have been posted on thier site on mindcraft. Oh well...
