During the battle scenes I couldn't help but think of The Terminator (yes the original). Oh well... I guess I shouldn't bitch, it was free.
But wait! This America! I can bitch all I want!
My main motivation when I contribute to open source projects is that I want the free software that others contribute. I realize that if everyone just leached off of the system then Linux wouldn't exist at all so I try to do my part.
It would be nice if everyone felt this way. I see it all to often... people would rather take from then give back.
You know... About a year and a half ago, when I first started using a Sun Workstation at work, I didn't really care for the keyboard lay out. Then after a couple of weeks of use I found myself looking for the cut/copy/paste keys when I got home to my Linux box.
I also find the open and front buttons very useful.
Its all you really need. Plenty of great chapters on IPv6; What it is. How it works and how it is different than IPv4. Plus TONS of other great stuff. Check it out.
Why bother with the software bundles that nobody wants or really uses? I have this same beef with PC component board manufactorers... Why does my video card come with crappy games from 4 years ago? Do they honestly believe that is going to win me over?
However, I think your missing the point of having a degree... First off, the physical piece of paper doesn't mean anything. What that piece of paper represents does mean soemthing. IMHO, it means that you were willing to sweat it out and work hard for 4-5 years on a subject. Dispite what some my think (via TV and movies) college is HARD. Unless, your in "slackers" major.:)
Note: I do understand that thier are some out there with the will and not the way (ie money) to go college and vise versa.
You seem like you have the CS stuff down... but my question is:
Do you have the other 50-70 some odd credits worth of classes that do not involve CS?
A bachelor's degree is (supposed to be) a well-rounded educatation. You are right, a CS degree does involve programming and reading a lot of CS related books. ( Trust me I know:) ) However, it also involves A LOT of other subjects like for example, Math. Calculus I-III, Diff. EQ, Discrete Math and the like. Which at first seem like wastes of time (some I think are) but, some of it does relate back to CS. A Discrete Math class has a section about binary trees for example and ways of traversing them. Note: I know that is a basic example, but hey I was up late and got no sleep. I can't think of a better example right now;)
So personally, I wouldn't go with the "give me the quick and easy route." If you want that then get Certifications.
You know as well as I that if he writes his congressman, all that he'll get in return is a form letter - the congressperson won't even read his letter let alone take the time to actually send him a personalized letter back (not that I blame him, I'm sure he is very busy, but thats beyond the point).
That is a poor assumption. "Why try? I am only going to fail." Come on.
And if that doesn't work you want us to get involved directly? Come on, I mean I know that it is possible to run for city board or whatever, but that takes money and a LOT of time.
First I didn't say it was easy or cheap. Nor did I say run for city board. What I meant was do things like start a petition, picket, etc. Someone once said "The price of freedom is eternal vigilance." I believe to be more true now then ever.
All that you really can do is get a lot of people to express their opinion to their congressman, or elect a new one next election. Therefore, discussing issues here IS going to make changes.
Couldn't agree more.
Why? Because you are able to reach a lot of people - the same people that will eventually go to the polls and vote.
IMHO... Slashdot folks only account for a small amount of the american public.
Ugg... You totally missed the point (which is why you probably posted as Anonymous Fool).
If you read the whole reply you would have noticed my point was to get involved with the problem and not just sit back and complain about the "pin heads".
The free and legal exchange of information we need as citizens is slowly being eroded by pinheads in Washington...
Not that I am for this type of "information hiding"...
Do you have better ideas on how to keep malicious people from harming our nation? Share them. I don't think this sort of thing is the answer either. Although, if you have any weaknesses you try not to let your enimies know what they are. The sad part is this sort of thing hurts us too.
With that in mind... If you don't like the way things are run in government then (and this is the beauty of America) you can affect change. Write your Congressmen, Senator, etc. Hell, maybe even get involved directly. Bottom Line: Voice your opinion. Here is a good start, but discussing it here is not going to change anything.
Let those "Pin heads" know you don't like this sort of censorship.
I would have to agree. I enjoy my job very much because I get to do what I love. Programming. Its why I am there. Its why I was hired. I admit at times we do take short breaks and joke around. However, I find I am having the most fun at work when I am writing code and getting things done. Its a high for me.
People need to understand that it is called work for a reason. No company is going to last very long with empolyees who produce nothing but, high scores on Solitare and shoot Nerf guns at each other all day.
I am not trying to come off as the fun police, but I think too many people got the idea that tech jobs are supposed to play time. One has to perform and produce inorder to stay in the field. Bottom Line.
I guess this means the low level IT job market will take another hit.
I could see this kind of technology being perfected in the near future which means another low level IT job becomes obsolete. Its kind of sad because Help Desk is where most IT internships and entry level positions are.
This just in... Microsoft is attempting to catch up to the rest of the world. Full story at 11.
I kind of felt it was more of the same as well.
During the battle scenes I couldn't help but think of The Terminator (yes the original). Oh well... I guess I shouldn't bitch, it was free.

I've got a GBA with an Afterburner frontlight. It works great. No need to change. Enough said.
You know... About a year and a half ago, when I first started using a Sun Workstation at work, I didn't really care for the keyboard lay out. Then after a couple of weeks of use I found myself looking for the cut/copy/paste keys when I got home to my Linux box.

EXACTLY! Thank you.
8 million dollars!?
Umm... X is not an operating system. It is a windowing system.
Happy Happy Joy Joy!!!
UNIX Network Programming.

The parent post nailed. Best ISP: College LANs.

Just some food for though.
Someone PLEASE mod this up!
I agree not everyone needs "that piece of paper".

Yeah I saw that too. Lovely Christmas Tree and snow.
Of course we are going to dis-credit this sort of break through... Cause how can one make PC-mods to a test tube?
That is a poor assumption. "Why try? I am only going to fail." Come on.

HELL YEAH!
Listen people forget the Tick. Watch the Family Guy. Good low brow humor.
Its has a simple interface. Does syntax highlighting, projects, etc. check it out. The only downer is it only for Windows. :(
www.jcreator.com
Your right... this isn't really useful to the common person, but I still think its a cool idea.
Although, I am still waiting for my mp3 player/Retina scanner. ;)

I think one could sum it right here...
So, why does it rock you ask? Cause it follows the KISS method. No BS. No stupid ads. No pop-ups. Its just a simple search engine that gives RESULTS.
I guess this means the low level IT job market will take another hit.
