It is true that people may be content to advance at the expense and misery of others. In fact, it is rather common today, even in cultures that have a history of other-centered ethics (virtue), to glamorize such behavior (precisely because in those cultures there is an active abandonment of the foundations that produced them). And it is all done with the logic you suggest: "What is me and mine is right and good."
The problem with that is how we treat the one is how we will treat the many, and people know this. So, if you can abuse someone we both think is in our mutual "outgroup" I quietly know that you have the capability to do it to anyone, even those in your "ingroup" which includes me. "Us four and no more...and it might only be three of us."
Evil has a corrosive effect that cannot be limited to my "enemies." That's why integrity really does matter.
Generally speaking, it's almost always more profitable in the long run to be ethical. As in most things, there are exceptions. Also, profitability has to be thought of in a broader way to accurately understand this issue. Human flourishing is the ultimate "profit" which includes wholeness in relationships which is always destroyed by being "evil".
I wish Apple would make ODF more standard in its products (like in iPhone OS built in document viewers, etc.). That would go a long way to seeing widespread adoption. It's the 21st century for heaven's sake. I can't believe we haven't adopted an open standard for our documents yet. This is really becoming a pain.
One use I'd deploy right now is a scheduling kiosk for our fleet. We have a fleet of vehicles and we use pen and paper to schedule their use. I'd love to install one of these next to the key box and have a networked scheduling web app running on it. That way if you're at the key box you can schedule or you could do it from your workstation. Or I could put one next to a common space phone and set it to browse our intranet. Or use it as a wall mounted closed circuit tv monitor. All kinds of uses...
What will Ubuntu provide over Debian for a server?
Excellent hardware detection for one. I've been using Ubuntu for some time now and the other day I found a problem with the Samba package with Breezy (OS X has a hard time with it). I thought about just doing a Debian install and get the latest Samba that way rather than upgrade Breezy with a non-Ubuntu Samba package. Right off the bat the Debian installer couldn't detect my network card, and then it all came back to me, remembering hours of getting specific hardware to work with a plain Debian install.
I understand that a better Debian installer is in the works, but for now, Ubuntu understands every piece of hardware I've thrown at it.
The studio has been unapologetically pushing this movie to evangelical Christians for weeks.
Apparently Disney spent about the same amount marketing to evangelical Christians as it has many of its other family-oriented movies (which is a comparatively small amount).
So, when the Toyota of the desktop computing world finially is ready to step it up they will slowly be able to nick away at M$...
It already has. It's called Apple.

So how long unitl the Spammers simply block the mailinator.com domain? Or websites refuse to take email addresses from that domain?
From the FAQ:
What are alternate domains?
Every now and then you bump into a website that does not permit email addresses at mailinator.com (scoundrels!). Don't fret. There is more than one domain pointing to the mailinator system. If you send email to one of the listed alternate domains - it will come to mailinator.com just as if you sent it directly. For example, stinky@mailinator.com is EXACTLY the same as stinky@fakeinformation.com (which are exactly the same as any other domain in the list).
Think of how many artists have been killed off because they've had it pounded into their heads since their youth that art is am impractical career.
Well...it often is. I know someone who has a Masters in Art from one of the finest schools and now is the assistant manager of a Boston Market. And this is about as good as it gets.
Sure, some can make it with a Masters in Art and even do well. But art isn't supposed to be practical. Granted, art is needed in business every day, but often that's a certain kind of art.
The fact is things that are meaningful and beautiful aren't always profitable.
Are there any good F/OSS implementations of VB out there for customers to migrate to?
If you don't need to be on the Win32 platform GAMBAS is an awesome replacement for VB. It is a pleasure to use and the development community is very responsive.
Do you even believe in "correct"? I do. I don't believe that it is all relative. I think that position is extremely untenable.
As my first post stated, I believe that mandatory communism is against the nature of humanity, the concept of freedom and the concept of liberty. Being against the nature of these things, I deem it "incorrect". In other words, it is out of harmony with what is.
You don't have to believe in gravity, but you will suffer the consequences of ignoring it.
By that logic goverment shouldn't mandate anything.
And by that logic the government should mandate everything.
No, I didn't say that. I am saying that it isn't your role or anyone's role to say how much a person can earn and how much wealth is allowed and if one goes over that amount then to redistribute (forcibly take) that money. Tax me for public services (roads, national defense, etc.)...sure! That's legitimate.
The problem is people are inherently greedy and that is where the system starts to fall apart.
This is why I stated it must be voluntary, because of the nature of man, freedom, and liberty. I know many people who voluntarily share a common purse and community of goods and it works well for them. But it is based on their own conviction and, as I said, voluntary.
Generosity and concern for our fellow man is to me a moral imperative. But when governments mandate it, all sorts of problems begin, because it is not the role of government to do this.
Do you even understand what communism is? It is by nature totalitarianism. It is opposed to the nature of man, the nature of freedom and the nature of liberty.
Who will determine that my abundance should go to someone else's lack? Will force be used to create this balance?
Voluntary communism is wonderful. And it is found all over the world, often among religious groups. But mandatory communism is totalitarianism, plain and simple.
With so many of the gtk programs riviling the qt equivalents, I wonder why companies always flock towards Qt.
Because QT is solid, elegant and well supported. It makes coding in C++ trivial, which means time saved, which means money saved, and that's what companies think about. People seem to appreciate the gtk look and feel over QT, but for a framework QT is awesome.
Xandros - GUI for Samba!

Xandros' File Manager makes this very easy. Xandros has the best Samba setup and usage I've ever seen. It just works out of the box.
I know we're talking another distribution other than SuSE, but still it's worth a mention.
Linux itself is a clone of an operating system that is 20-plus years old. That's what it is. That is what you can get today, a clone of a 20-year-old system.
What happened to the, "They're skimming all our good stuff" rant before? Does he mean Linux is a clone of DOS?
BTW, new doesn't mean better. In the words of Scotty, "The more they overhaul the plumbing, the eaiser it is to stop up the drain."
Language was invented a long time ago. Still working fine last time I checked.
Could you name some...groupware that can run cross platform (Windows and *nix), sync with your palm, is open source, and doesn't need an Exchange$$ server? It seems to me, this will be a killer app for small businesses when it fully matures.
