  3. Re:It's going to be bad, in theory on How ISPs May Quietly Kill VoIP · · Score: 1
Latency? A typical cell phone call can have more than a half second round trip. Try it some time. Have the person on the other end listen and start counting along with you. You're not going to even -approach- 250ms latency on the public internet unless you're doing transcontinental satellite hops.

I wouldn't sign up for VoIP service if I wanted cellphone quality service. The extra monthly cost of a cell phone is well worth it to be able to take it with me, however the quality is vastly inferior to a landline.

I'd use VoIP if I wanted service that rivaled landline quality, for cheaper and with more features.

"The shelter can also be delivered sterile," said Crawford. "This allows previously impossible surgical procedures to be performed in situ from day one of a crisis."

Sounds pretty useless, unless it is shipped with sterile water, and sterile air to inflate it with. Just shows that the inventors haven't fully thought through their ideas.

Just what the third world countries need is to become dependent upon GM crops, and then, ten-years from now have Monsanto decide to enforce all its patents.

Just like with software, third world countries are best sticking to public-domain agriculture.

  9. Console format use != media dominance on Sony Adopts Blu-ray Disc PlayStation 3 · · Score: 0, Redundant

I'm still not convinced that they'd have any leverage in other media based markets because they use Blu-Ray in their consoles. Since it's unlikely that people will use PS3s to play their Blu-Ray movies, I don't see how using the media for games would make it any more dominant in other areas. It would be just as easy to buy an HD-DVD player when you have a Blu-Ray PS3 as it would be if you had an HD-DVD based PS3

  10. Gambling on Public Markets For Predicting Google's Market Cap · · Score: 1

    Hi-
Actually I think that some activists patenting several completely ridiculuous parents would be a good way of bringing some attention to this issue.
Of another note, I hope it doesn't come to this, but it would be great if someone like the FSF could get the resources to patent some ideas that come up in open source software. (could be difficult as most open source ideas are published as soon as they are thought of)

If there was ever a lawsuit contesting the patent, then you would be able to file a friend of the court brief. I'm not sure exactly what documentation you'd need to show. Probably it would need to be the data company and not you that files the brief.

Until then, there isn't really much that can be done.

  14. What about privacy? on Four Big ISPs File Six Anti-Spam Suits · · Score: 1

While it is good that spammers are being shown some accountability, we also need to watch out for our rights. I find it interesting how many of the same tactics are being used against spammers as are used by the recording labels against silesharers. We have to be very careful about what privacy we are willing to give away in order to combat spam. Allowing anyone to subpeona IP address ---> billing details records is a very slippery slope. Why is it that slashdotters see "John Doe suit filed by recording industry (bad) against P2P user (good)" and say that the end of privacy is here, but when they see "Major ISPs (good) file John Doe suit against spammers (bad)" they say more power to them?

  15. Re:Is this even true?!? on Yahoo Moving to PHP · · Score: 2, Insightful

Well, the fact that Yahoo is switching backends really is not of interest to most of the media. Looking at their other press releases, most of them are about either new services they are launching or about financial information. As far as most financial reporters go, they couldn't care less what backend it has as long as it keeps running. To the best of my knowelege this story is true, and it is backed up by the presentation made to the PHP Con 2002. Cheers, Erek Dyskant
