So what's different about $PC_maker shipping you the $Part, or Apple shipping the $Part to $Auth_Service_Center where you can pick it up after they have tested it to make sure it isn't another lemon $Part?

See where I'm going with this? At least the $Auth_Service_Center gives you the option to get a $Part right then, and a spare $Part may be useful, especially if it is something like a $Wattage capacity consumer removeable $Part.

Last time I checked, if you are in a tough spot, you can't open the Yellow Pages and find a direct-marketing $PC_maker store in most populated areas and get the part you are looking for.

And running off on another tangent, is there any reason why $Auth_Service_Center can't order the warranty $Part, and then give you one (1) $Part from the shelf, knowing they have a free replacement $Part coming, and they can send back the defective $Part for a credit / reimbursement / get-out-of-invoice-free-card?

I'm just a lowly systems engineer, so I have found this discussion of retail distribution / service distribution channels enlightening, but you guys need to think a bit more, and be jackasses a bit less.

  3. Caminera autoproxy? on Friday Morning Release Party · · Score: 2, Interesting

In the release notes for Camino / Chimera, it mentions that they have added the functionality for proxy autoconfiguration (.PAC files). There is no preference pane for it, but I did find documentation about editing the user.js file in ~/Library/Application Support/ / though it still doesn't work.

Anyone else running an autoproxy and had better luck?

  4. Safari is not there yet on Chimera Developer Considers Dropping It · · Score: 1

It would pain me greatly to see Chimera have an untimely meeting with Bellerophon, who has the sublet contract from the king.

While both products are currently in beta, Chimera is a much MUCH more mature beta than Safari. I use both, but I use Safari at home, and Chimera at work on my Powerbook. Why? Chimera remembers my proxy password.

It doesn't matter how many times I hit the remember password / add to keychain thing in Safari, it cannot and does not remember my credentials for the proxy, which is incredibly annoying. Chimera does this with no issue, as does OmniWeb.

Besides, on a gigahertz mac, the render speed is exactly the same between them, so I'd rather have less bugs, tabs, things working mostly, etc. etc. I'm sure that I will give Safari another try once it matures a bit more, but for right now if I have to choose, I choose Chimera.

Whoa. Someone's choice for President didn't get elected. Now getting back to the topic, who said anything about the DMCA? Is there a lawsuit between Apple and the Mozilla project? Has someone invoked the DMCA here? How did EVERY tech-news site miss that, but your uninformed knee-jerk reacting self catch it?

News flash!!! Corporate entities are ruthless!!! Stop the presses! Come on now, is this amateur hour here or something? EVERY corporation is out there to get your dollar, and everything they do is engineered to effect their bottom line. Charity? Tax credits. Free software? Building market presence. Lawsuits over licensing? Legal CYA maneuver.

There is no free lunch in the corporate world, only vendors trying to influence you into buying their widget to incorporate in your larger widget.

Besides, doesn't anyone remember that iTunes used to be SoundJam anyway? I'm sure that Cassidy & Greene (original developer) would have done the same had someone used the SoundJam SDK to produce a plugin of the same nature. Besides, how are any of you damaged by this? You can't download the FREE plugin from the developer anymore, but instead have to go somewhere else to get your FREE software from the guy that wasn't making any money on it anyway? Yeah, it's open source, the bastards are wearin you down, etc. etc. screw the man.

    shut up.

  8. Re:Americans with Disabilities Act on Kroger Testing Fingerprint Payment System · · Score: 1

That would be one reason why it is voluntary, rather than manditory.

If you can come up with a fast-pay solution that every single person can use that no one would have privacy concerns about, I'd love to hear it.

Whether it be a retina scan a la Minority Report where people steal your eyes and have eye-replacement surgery or a pinprick / DNA match, there will always be people that bitch about 'my privacy this', or 'quadrapolegic can't do that'. This is why there is still Cash, Checks, Credit cards, Debit cards, Green Stamps, Traveller's cheques, wire transfers, etc. How easy are any of these solutions for people with no arms? When someone is designing a system, they design it for the maximum feasible amount of users possible, because it would be insanely expensive and convoluted otherwise, not to mention the fact that such a system would be made mainly from "unobtanium" as I cannot easily think of ANY system that would accomodate every single ailment or disability that can possibly occur to a human.
