I have no real concrete advice for you, but it sounds like what you want to do is setup something of a multicast on your network. You'll need a content server to serve whatever content you are looking to multicast. In this way not everyone has to be in on the same "channel." You can have different multicasts going on at once depending on the multicast address. I'm talking more conceptual since I'm not particularly aware of what product might be able to manage this, but I would almost be sure that Cisco has something that could do this (although how expensive it probably is, I have no idea). I'll bet there are some *nix pieces of software that may be able to do this as well. And this being slashdot, I'm sure someone will suggest one. *grin*
Sound Transit is a joke and the monorail is only Seattle specific. Transit needs to include the Eastside as well. I agree that things always seem to get bogged down here in over-analysis and fear of progress, because god-forbid if more people move here. I actually like the fact that the monorail folk seem to be going so fast on things. I know it scares over half the populace here but screw 'em. Just build it. And when a company like Boeing (you know a small little company that doesn't employ many people around here) has a chief complaint of traffic and threatens to not produce their new efficient jet here as a result, you can NEVER have too much transit money and go too quickly.
Hmmm...to keep a little on-topic...I sure hope he doesn't get the same architect for the SFX that he had for the EMP. What would that look like? Perhaps an AT-AT crashed to the ground in pieces?
You're completely right on this. Seattle is his own little erector set. If he's going to be spending all his money here I wish he'd put it towards some freaking kick-ass mass transit..none of this crap like the EMP and SFX. It makes me gag to think this will be built. But the guy owns 3/4 of Lake Union so I guess there's really nothing to stop him, except for maybe zoning. And somehow I don't think any city council member would even think about saying no to Paul Allen...schmucks!
Paul Allen should just stay in Portland and blaze up with the rest of the Trailblazers...
So you are saying that if someone asks me what day today is and I say, "April 16th, 2003" I am being illogical? I'll grant that the european way is sorted in ascending order, but that's about it.
It's no better or worse than the european method. Just like saying, "It's May 6th, 2003" (5/6/2003) is no better or no worse than saying, "It's the 6th of May, 2003" (6/5/2003)
Have never used VNC so I can't comment on the comparisons. I do use and maintain a Citrix server and it is wonderful. It enabled us to have all our remote sites work at better than LAN speeds. A 56k modem at a high connection rate is very usable, ISDN or DSL is sheer beauty.
I don't care how small they can get hard drives anymore. It's old technology. Now give me an affordable 10GB (and bigger) solid-state drive then I'll be one happy guy.
Oh boy did I love the CornellCard. No cash? CornellCard it! But when I was there it was strictly for meal plan and buying stuff at the campus store and such. It controls access to building's now? So does that mean if someone decided to create a card from this flaw, enter a building, and say...steal some computers or just cause general mayhem, the system would know that so and so entered the building at about the same time of the crime (but was in fact a bogus card, resulting in a faulty accusation)?
So our attack on Iraq was part of the war on terrorism? Hmmm...what terrorism is that going to stop? All the terrorism that was sponsored by Iraq? IANAE (I am not an expert), but as far as I can tell the only terrorism Saddam Hussein engaged in or supported was against his own people. So let's see, I guess we will then need to invade Iran, Syria, hmm...China? Whoa...that would be fun. How about a good deal of the African Continent too. Oh yeah, Ireland. Let's say we go for Ireland and Sinn Fein next. Oh wait, they're generally caucasian. Hmmm...that might not be very popular. Then there's a whole host of Central and South American countries and let's not forget Southeast Asia and of course North Korea. That should then stamp out terrorism once and for all...don't ya think?
What would I do if he were re-elected? Curl up in the fetal position in the corner of my studio apartment muttering incomprehensible things to no one...either that or living out the movie Leaving Las Vegas

Yeah because every startup has the money to put tens of thousands of dollars into their hardware. Not to mention the many thousands of dollars to purchase the high end software. Oh yeah, how about the cost of programming these? What? We have to be able to maintain it all too? Hmm...how much will one or two knowledgeable and experienced admins cost? How many hits do we get per day, per hour, per minute? God help us if we ever want to change something. I'd like to see that ROI...actually...no...I wouldn't.
Why not use bluetooth and give it it's own power supply? Leave it in the kitchen, get yourself the bluetooth Oven, Mixer, et al. You could program your meal from across the world (or across the room). They could all talk to each other so they know the doneness and adjust appropriately so that everything is done at once! Although the Microsoft Toaster Service Pack 3 might enable them to find out if you are using white or wheat bread, thus being able to control the grain markets in the future.
Global Warming is such a farce...well no...I won't say that. But our effect on global warming is a farce or just plain overstated. One volcanic eruption produces the same amount of greenhouse gases as all of human society over a decade. If the earth is warming then it's just because it's warming. Like everything else in nature, these things go in cycles. We are looking at such a minute amount of time it's ridiculous to think we know what's going on. Do I like pollution? No, of course not. But let's get rid of pollution for the sake of getting rid of pollution, not because of "global warming."
I'm not 100% on this, but I have always thought that once something is in the garbage it is in the public domain. Once it's at the curb it's fair game. I thought that's why it's not illegal or anything for reporters and PIs and such to search through the garbage of celebrities and others to gain information. Anyone know of anything concrete about this?
Actually to be technically accurate you are defining a bond and not stocks. Stocks are not unsecured loans, they are equity. To bring it to a smaller scale. Say you own your own business, and you need to expand, you have two ways to go. You can get a loan from the bank (bonds) or you can find a new investor (stocks). With the bank loan you pay it off, with interest. After it matures you're done with it. With the new investor you split the profits and that person will always get that amount of profit based on how much equity he or she has put into the business. The more equity you have, the more you get back. The only way to be done with that is to buy the persons' share of equity.
IPOs really are a function of (estimated) current and future earnings. Or rather that's what they should be about and why everyone got whacked in the head in 2000 and on. So essentially a good IPO should generally say that they have a good business. An IPO does not...look at all the IPOs that end their first day below the initial price. Going public for the sake of going public is stupid and just kind of a race to get as much cash as I possibly can...NOW! So in that regard I agree with the fact that Google seems to be doing it right.
Hmmm...interesting. If I had mod points, there'd definitely be an informative in there for ya.

I'm not sure of how inter-connected the two sites are. But my gf applied for a job at IMDB and it's at Amazon HQ here in Seattle. She apparently knew all along...I had no idea until then. If you want to buy a movie you are looking at IMDB you'll notice it conveniently links to Amazon's site. And you'll also notice that when you are on Amazon you can get quotes for a movie you are looking to buy from IMDB. I don't know how linked the reviews are. I just quickly chose The Shawshank Redemption for a check and on IMDB it has over 1000 reviews whereas on Amazon it had something closer to 600. Maybe I should have chosen a less popular movie, but it looks like it's not just one db for all reviews, which actually strikes me as being weird.
IMDB now has a fee-based service, so it looks as if it's trying to be it's own money-making entity as opposed to just a tool for directing people to Amazon. But I'm also sure it does produce quite a bit of synergy for the company(apologies for the buzz-word). IMDB for me is a WONDERFUL tool. It's amazing the breadth and depth of it's information. And it does not bother me that it has anything to do with Amazon. Probably mostly because I don't have any problems with Amazon.
