This thing has been working for 3 months. Every time I come into the room all I see is the flash drive blinking away. So lets put out some rough math. (Oh the drive is at full capacity with the readyboost stuff) so the ablity to just keep writing to unused places doesn't work.

I'll use write for fun ... and a nice low number 150gb of write
150x31=4650 ... so give or take 4650gb of write to that flash in one month. It's on month 3 of operation. Hammer some torrents or other I/O intensive stuff and the thing writes even more. I used a cool readyboost monitor I found on the internet to monitor all this. Check it out ... I also found that the readyboost kinda slowed things down cause once in awhile you have to wait for it to do it's thing before it does what you want. 8. Re:Gaming Router on Can Any Router Guarantee Bandwidth For VoIP? · · Score: 1

It all depends on the amount of connections you cram through that router. I have a 6mbit/784kbit Cable line and if im running more then 2000 connections (which the WRT54GL does just fine) then everything goes to a halt. The overhead of all those connections just consumes the line. If you limit the amount of open connections in your torrent program you'll notice the QoS works quite well even for voip.

Bittorrent and Limewire have to be the worst for consuming the entire line with it's overhead. If you don't limit those down (usually ~ 250 connections max) and limit the upload lots lots (ie I send at ~ 70k/s I usually limit my torrents to ~ 20k/s) I notice almost nothing from those torrents.

My girlfriend on the other hand has 15mbit fibre in her home and her WRT54GS v5 (with 2mb/12mb) can't handle 14mbit of bandwidth (up and down) just constantly reboots. For most residental lines tho the trick is all in the open UDP/TCP connections. (I know UDP isn't technically a connection but UDP shows up as a open connection to the router.

If you SSH/Telnet into the router and "type" this command.
    sed -n 's%.* src=\(192.168.[0-9.]*\).*%\1%p' /proc/net/ip_conntrack | sort | uniq -c
It will show you the active amount of connections. You should keep the total under ~ 1500 ... if your pushing that many connections you should maybe consider getting a bigger internet package as most residental lines won't handle it. Esp PPPoE DSL ... throwing another layer (PPP) just makes things worse.

DD-WRT's QoS is pretty good you just need to play with some of the numbers. If you have them too low then your losing out on speed. If you keep them too high then you'll notice things slowing down. Convienently I made a simple QoS startup guide to kinda get you started. This Page.

Quite a few people cloak their SSID's and there is alot of wireless clients floating around from printers to laptops to just people running NetStumbler.

Once you get kismet logging let it log for a month or so, then using a program called "aircrack-ng" your able to brute force the WEP keys. Eventually they will come through. Once you get in use the WRT as a client and get it to NAT from the wireless. This way you can keep on the same subnet (if your not allowing broadcasts through who cares right). Then get a static IP address on their AP (192.168.1.4 etc etc) or somthing along those lines then completely block the NAT on it (no pings no open ports no nothing) so even if they do find you it looks like a "ghost" IP to anyone without super amounts of networking knowlege. Once your on set your gateway to the address of the router stealing the wireless. Doing this I was able to smoke almost 600k/s constantly on torrents off "secured" wireless routers around me.

Yeah this is horribly simplified but with this information you should be able to fish out what you want. Yes ... you can inject packets and such but for someone who is just doing this for fun around your house why transmit what you really don't have too. Once you get about 1000 IV's it's good to go from there. It took me almost 6 billion keys tho to find a 64bit WEP pass @ 1000IV's the more IV's the quicker it goes.

Hey ... if people didn't want you taking their wireless they wouldn't transmit it to your house.
