With all the wrist braces and elbow braces that IMAK is selling, combined with the plethora of case mods available out there I have to wonder when is the first telecast of the Extreme Coding competitions going to be on TV? Will there be replays of the geeks who's hands sieze up? And most importantly will this make it easier for geeks to get chicks?
By indulging in a variety of fulfilling activities so I'm not dependant on any one of them. Actually doing it is the trick though, I can't say I'm perfect, I'm addicted to caffeine, a variety of games and people.
That being said addiction in itself isn't necessarily a bad thing depending on what it is your addicted too. Being addicted to say.. your wife, can be nice.
Other we're all screwed since we're all chronic water addicts.
It all goes back to what we've all been saying for several years (and CmdrTaco has admitted it himself): if not for Slashdot, these guys would be flipping burgers.
I've always found comments like this to be baffling. I mean you could say that without the car Henry Ford wouldn't have amounted to much either, but it misses the point (1) well he did invent the car so he did amount to a lot and (2) because he did that, we'll never know what would have happened if he didn't.
That being said improved grammar and spelling wouldn't hurt anyone (myself included).
Pretty much every law-enforcement force (sherifs, police, FBI, etc) has access to all the unbiased numbers you would want. And if they don't have them they can tell you where to get the. Interesting but meaningless statistics include:
Number of annual homocides
Number of annual murders
Number of confinscated weapons
Number of crimes commited with guns
Number of legal vs illegal weapons used in gun crimes
All of these are essentially meaningless though since at the end of the day, the issue is whether or not you live in a safe society or not. Guns do not change that, the attitudes and values of your society do.
IMHO, the reason America has such a high rate of gun death isn't that it's people have access to guns. It's the detail that it's a big, heavily populated country with a lot of people who are poor, uneducated and put pretty much zero value on the lives of others (and frequently themselves). People who are happy and have a lot to live for are generally less likely to want to engage in gunfights than people who hate the world and assume it hates them back.
All that's going to turn that around any time soon is a spectacular reversal of either human nature or economic practice.
Britian has a similar problem, only in their case all the dregs are compressed into a small island which supports a culture of not getting involved (because you might get hurt). Add to that the average beat cop's most powerful weapon is the baton and being a criminal in Britian doesn't seem like such a bad career option for many.
"In the process, I haven't lost my job, and due to our simultaneous obsession, I have not lost my fiancé either. I haven't lost my real life friends, but they do sometimes look at me funny when I talk about the game I play. Low and I get our work done, run our business and have a great balanced life together I think. Anyone who actually knows me in real life can tell you that I have no self image or esteem problems and in fact, I have been accused of having quite an ego. I won't even go into Low's ego."
In other words playing video games does not automatically make you an addict if you practice control and don't use them to fill an emotional void of some sort. Just like having a few drinks at a bar with your buddies doesn't make you an alcoholic.
Is the phrase "Moderation in all things." really so hard for the modern world to understand?
On a side note, if a severe beating is the penalty for cold blooded PK'ing in South Korea I wonder what they do to cheaters? And is there any chance we could adopt it here?:)
As much as I'd like to try to cover myself by saying I planned it as an example of a misquote by Dubyah I'll just confess to it being a typo and try to get more sleep before posting in future.
Slashdot has conspired with Sciencenews in an attempt to claim that there are inperfections in American Democracy.
I fully expect Dubyah to declare both sites to be terrorist regimes in league with Al Queda and Saddam Hussein. He'll surely sight./ effect as an example of a weapon of mass destruction.
On the bright side if the least popular candidate does win, that does explain a lot about various elections over the years...
Firstly you must come up with the concept. It must be sufficently original and innovative that your not dismissed as a clone but not so innovative or original that nobody is sure whether they'll enjoy it or not. Then you've got to build proof of a concept for stage two...
Begging for help. You must convince other people your game (which currently consists of a design plan) will be seriously sweet, will sell like hotcakes and will have manageable costs (people with money usually like money and if they give it away, they want to see it come back).
Thirdly you must find developers, artists, programmers, etc who are willing to work on your game for the money you can offer (which will probably be meager unless your idea is one of those mythical "guaranteed sell-outs") and who are capable of doing the job. Consider how high some of the studios have set the bar and that's a hell of a job.
Forthly you have go though the development phase without having your game managled by the development phase. As well as the regular dilbertisms you've also got to avoid many truisms unique to game development and avoid having your product adjusted for political reasons (censorship, sensitivity to minorities, new management doesn't like old management's projects on the priniciple, funding runs out and nobody wants to give you more) etc.
Finally you have the game and it's all that you hoped for, your set right? Well no. Marketting has to spread across the world and convince geeks with money that they want to shell out for your game. If you lucky the marketting department will put out a somewhat accurate image of your game, game reviewers will be having a good day and enjoy it when it reaches their magazine/web site and people will have the spare cash to buy the game.
Then you can still get screwed should say your game not appeal to enough people, be overshadowed by another game of similar type (let's face it, if you release a first person shooter in the same season ID does, your going down) or by a totally different type (if everyone's buying the latest FPS by ID they're going to be playing it instead of your neat, low violence RPG).
So really, even if you have the idea of the century and you get support from other people the chances of you finishing up with a decent quality game with good marketting and high enough sales to generate a notable profit (to be distributed among all investing parties) is pretty damn slim.
Quite frankly it's a miracle any studio stays in business for more than one production run. It is most definitely no business for the faint of heart, the dispassionate or those who need a realiable income.

should be how do some games studios succeed.
