but a current Linux distro would probably perform as well now as a current one would have then.
Sorry, but RedHat 8 needs 64MB minimum. Nonetheless, I tried to install it in text mode on a 32MB laptop, and it kept running out of memory during package installation. Pretty lame if you ask me, but it does say 64MB minimum on the specs.
Hopefully, this means prices of SCSI cables will come down from the current insane levels, as a serial cable is much easier to make than a twisted many-wire ribbon.
What you have to do is:
- log in remotely (e.g., ssh)
- kill the X Server
- restart the X Server to reinitialize graphics mode
- cleanly shut down the X Server to reinitialize text mode
- start X Server again
On XFree (since at least version 3.1), you can hit CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE to shutdown/kill the X server if it hangs.
A lot. This was mentioned in the earlier article, IIRC.
I have an entry in/etc/hosts for my NAT box's internal interface. If there was no such entry, would locally generated lookups for my private name hit a root server?
Yes, they would, and some resolvers will keep retrying over and over and over...
If this had the same capacity as the "desktop" IDE drives, say 120+ GB then we would be talking.
Yes, well it's very hard, if not impossible, to make a 10,000 RPM drive at the same media density as a 5400 or 7200 RPM drive.
However, as someone pointed out, this is only a 1-platter drive, so 72GB or maybe 140GB should be practical, if it doesn't overheat due to increased air friction.
The sun is full of hydrogen, so all we need to do is build a space elevator to the sun and suck it to earth. :)
How many ISP's were there then???
1 or 2 at most.
Are there any good Non-MS Word Processors, Spreadsheets, etc available for OS X?
I know StarOffice is supposedly in the works, and OpenOffice may be available.
Anything else?

OMG, Was she driving a Ford Pinto?

Greyfox said he did submit an examples patch for "find" to GNU, and they didn't apply it.

Works best if you spell it right. ;)

ANY ISP should be CACHING on their nameservers, so there should not be _that_ much traffic from them.
Several.
And none are violent criminals.
It ain't rape if you have to pay for it! :P
e.g. in GTA3.
According to that theory, then there should have been huge increases in violent crime following each major war.
I know there was after the Civil War (in the Wild West), but what about WWI, WWII, Korea, & Vietnam?
Doesn't seem like it.
Actually, AMD was founded in 1969.
I don't know about 3DS, but POVRay can render 1 frame on a many-server farm.
It breaks the image into tiles.
Don't forget the original Athlon kicked serious PIII butt, and is still keeping up with the P4.
Not that I'm saying he's not "rich"... I don't know what he's worth on paper. I'm sure he's making at least $150,000 for Transmeta.
Plus, he can literally work at any company of his choice. That's gotta be worth something.
Plus a recall. (on the 1.13GHz PIII Coppermine, IIRC.)
Are you saying you would like to write compilers for Itanium???
My understanding is it's extremely difficult to get optimal performance out of it.
Actually, the Alpha EV7 may be even faster, but HP is suppressing benchmarks.
See http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=7034 for more info.
Litewolf is right.

KABOOM!

I think you're thinking of fibre channel.
