    but a current Linux distro would probably perform as well now as a current one would have then.

    Sorry, but RedHat 8 needs 64MB minimum. Nonetheless, I tried to install it in text mode on a 32MB laptop, and it kept running out of memory during package installation. Pretty lame if you ask me, but it does say 64MB minimum on the specs.

    Hopefully, this means prices of SCSI cables will come down from the current insane levels, as a serial cable is much easier to make than a twisted many-wire ribbon.

    What you have to do is: - log in remotely (e.g., ssh) - kill the X Server - restart the X Server to reinitialize graphics mode - cleanly shut down the X Server to reinitialize text mode - start X Server again

    On XFree (since at least version 3.1), you can hit CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE to shutdown/kill the X server if it hangs.

    A lot. This was mentioned in the earlier article, IIRC.

    I have an entry in /etc/hosts for my NAT box's internal interface. If there was no such entry, would locally generated lookups for my private name hit a root server?

    Yes, they would, and some resolvers will keep retrying over and over and over...

    ANY ISP should be CACHING on their nameservers, so there should not be _that_ much traffic from them.

    According to that theory, then there should have been huge increases in violent crime following each major war.

    I know there was after the Civil War (in the Wild West), but what about WWI, WWII, Korea, & Vietnam?
    Doesn't seem like it.

    When you need to render a single still image... renderfarms are out of the question.

    I don't know about 3DS, but POVRay can render 1 frame on a many-server farm.

    It breaks the image into tiles.

    AMD..., but then again will result in worse performance (unless their engineers are somehow much more brilliant than intel's).

    Don't forget the original Athlon kicked serious PIII butt, and is still keeping up with the P4.

    Well, I hope it's worth more than that, as a 4-bedroom house in most CA middle class neighborhoods is $400,000+ now.

    Not that I'm saying he's not "rich"... I don't know what he's worth on paper. I'm sure he's making at least $150,000 for Transmeta.

    Plus, he can literally work at any company of his choice. That's gotta be worth something.

    All the beer in Ireland or Belgium wouldn't make me get a job to write compilers for that processor architecture.

    Are you saying you would like to write compilers for Itanium???

    My understanding is it's extremely difficult to get optimal performance out of it.

    Actually, the Alpha EV7 may be even faster, but HP is suppressing benchmarks.

    If this had the same capacity as the "desktop" IDE drives, say 120+ GB then we would be talking.

    Yes, well it's very hard, if not impossible, to make a 10,000 RPM drive at the same media density as a 5400 or 7200 RPM drive.

    However, as someone pointed out, this is only a 1-platter drive, so 72GB or maybe 140GB should be practical, if it doesn't overheat due to increased air friction.
