The NVidia 40.x drivers already provide hardware transparency (Alpha blending) support on Windows 2000/XP, as well as other features. You can enable/disable them in the drivers.
I don't know if these features would cause the fan to kick in or not.
Apparently, the Quadro FX's fan comes on based on a thermostat, according to FiringSquad. Also, it doesn't have the external blower like the GeForceFX.
Creative used to claim "MP3 acceleration" for encoding and decoding. They didn't give much info, but I got the impression it would only work if you used their software for playing and encoding.
I was doing exactly that (in Eudora), but then I realized I was losing mail from: my insurance company (grep for insurance spam) messages about income tax changes from friends (grep for tax)...
Now, I use bogofilter. ID's MUCH more spam than my Eudora filters ever did, with very few false positives.
Keeping patches current is of course important, but MSNBC is saying that Microsoft could not confirm that the July patch is sufficient protection!

You may be able to replace the fan without removing/replacing the heatsink.
On many cards, the fan is screwed onto the heatsink.
I upgraded my TNT2 to a TNT2 Ultra by adding a P5 CPU Fan.
If not, maybe you can add some oil to the fan bearing, if you can get it apart without destroying it.

I'm not sure if it's the same thing, but I sometimes experience something like this in the middle of the night or early mornings.
It's usually a dream where I can't move and I sort of panic (in the dream).
Sometimes I'm able to wake myself up, but it isn't as disturbing as it used to be.
