The first time? No, I did not know that beforehand. Everyone has to learn once either by being told or going through it themselves, etc. Subsequent times I knew it and factored it in to my decision making. I was just trying to offer one person's experience (mine), with a similar situation. As far as having salaried parents, my parents seldom if ever discussed their contract negotiations and salries with me, but I did know that my father who was a teacher for 25+ years worked after school, after dinner, etc. So you're right, the information was there to be learned from. Some of us just need more than one lesson ;)

What I've often been told (and I am a game programmer working on a major PS2 title) is that "the compensation for your overtime was built into your salary". Of course, they only tell you that after it becomes an issue, not when you are negotiating contracts. In the end, it's the video game industry, and as much as people would like to compare the video game industry with the movie industry, one thing they actually have in common is that they simply would not be possible without the dedication and passion the developers put into them. There is nothing particularly smart or revolutionary about the business end of those industries, it's all in the "little" people who actually do the work. Long story short, you have to want to do it, and it will be hell at times.

I only mention here because this is the first game for me and I am very proud of our team. It is published by EA and will be available for the PS2. We're all fiending to see the second movie as we've gotten to see only bits and pieces along the way and are dying to see the finished product! I've been a Slashdot lurker for quite a few years now and finally have something worth posting! Congrats to the whole team.

Data being available publicvally is good, as long as it is not abused. Corporations have a record of non-abuse, and are owned by the people. The government does not and is not. That is all we need to know.

Hmm, where is this record of non-abusing corporations? And since when are corporations owned by the people? If that's so, shouldn't I be raking in some dividends on all these corporations? The corporations have PRIVATE interests at heart. That is very very different from having PUBLIC interests at heart. If it weren't different, we wouldn't have corporations who pollute, pay off lawsuits instead of performing recalls, drive prices up, and generally make popular culture as stupid as it is. I'm no expert, but a few of your statements just caught my eye.

Also no good as someone would surely find a way to uncover it and distribute it. Unless there is some keyless RSA out there... (I am an encryption newbie, after all). On top of that, encryption doesn't prevent copying! It only prevents someone from utilizing the encrypted data without the key.

I think your idea of micropayment might be much different from my (their ?) idea of micropayment. :) I've always thought it was the concept of making payments at small intervals, not necessarily small payments. For instance, buying one song might be a micropayment, since you are paying at smaller intervals when you pay for every song on a CD instead of for the whole thing, even if the end cost is the same. Or maybe they'll charge per minute of music downloaded... who knows. All this pay-for-play stuff scares me. Corporations would rather have us rent, lease, or pay-to-play for everything rather than owning anything. shiver

It may also be that there is no way to protect against things like copying via the pulses from a monitor/display.. I don't know it's not my field :) My point originally is that this response from the Movie Industry was to be expected, and is pretty consistent with their attitude all along.

The way _I_ interpret a response to this kind of thing (the publishing of source) is not that they don't want you to watch movies you own. I think they are more concerned about the people who don't plan on using this source to nicely bring the medium to Linux/FreeBSD/etc/etc, but those who plan on using it to copy DVDs illegally. While I don't agree with the "movie industry's" schemes for controlling import/export across their prorietary bounderies, based on their attitudes, I do understand their response to this situation. I've always been one of those slashdotters that watched mostly and posted only on an extreme fiew occasions. Perhaps the reason the number of stories/posts seems so overwhelming (and it does to me too) is because slashdot in it's current format no longer is conducive to the ideas it was created with. As much as I hate overcomplication, maybe stories, posts, and the like need a new way of being sorted and presented. It's just my two cents, but nothing can stay the same forever and hope to survive. If there was a way for slashdotters to more easily get to the topics they are interested in, they might more easily learn about those topics. Simply having a list of topics and a pile of posts about those topics might not be the answer anymore. Now there is the ability to filter out certain topics and subjects, scores, and on and on.. but maybe there is a simpler way. I am not trying to take anything away from all those who make this sight possible, as I love to read it most everyday.. but I think we should have a discussion as a community as to where we want our (their?) site to go in the future. Thanks for listening....
