  2. Love my old 48G on Recommendations for RPN Calculators? · · Score: 1

I have used a 48G since they came out in 92. (or was it 93?) I still have the same calulator to this day. If it were to die tomorrow, I would get another HP. I like the fact that it can be programmed fairly painlessly. I worked in Traffic engineering for a while, and I wrote a program for the service guys to find the Green cut-offs for field programming traffic controllers. It was just a simple matrix manipulation, but it worked.

I have a back up in the form of a rpn program for my palm. However, I prefer my HP.

Perhaps it has to do with the popular media recient portrayal of science not as a good thing, but as somethin that will turn on us as a species. When was the last time you turned on the alphabet soup networks, and saw science presented in a positive light?

This is what I am going to have a hard time. If you are using your own lab, with your own money, of course you are going to find your own products better. Being that it is an MS lab will really really hurt the credibility of any papers they put out.

I may be a Civil, but I do know with enought tweaking, you can make any computer model say what you want it to say.

  7. Cisco Phone Systems on Finding the Right Business Phone System? · · Score: 1

My company went to The Sisco System about 6 months ago. It took about a month, and a new switcher to get the bugs out of the system. During that month, we had audio quality issues. We are running the system on a win2k server. My phone has crashed a couple of times, but overall, it seems to work as advertised. One of the features that I liked was the fact that when I had to move my office, my phone number went with me without having to call in the service company.

  8. Ah...Classic Shooters... on R-Type Final Gets Fresh For U.S.? · · Score: 2, Interesting

R-type was always one of my favorite coin-op games. When I owned a small arcade back in the mid '90s, I think I played the game more than any of my customers. Then again, this may be why I also had a Xybots in the arcade as well.

There was one sequel, R-type 2, that was released for Coin-op, but I have never seen it in an arcade. This game spawned a lot of look alike shooter, like St. Dragon, and Macross.

Too bad im too cheap to buy a PS2. I would like to see the new game.

  9. So they are using GM instead of Selective breeding on Genetically Engineered Pets Hit the Market · · Score: 1

Big Deal. It is just a short cut to the selective breeding process.

I am working under the assumtion that the 'Zebra fish' is more than likely the common zebra diano that is avalible for under a buck at most pet shops. The fish is one of the most prolific egg scatters known to aquariumist. The stock you can buy at most pet stores has been so badly inbreed, most die within a year. Other forms of this fish have been activly bred away from the wild varities, such as the giant zebra, and the long tailed zebra. Because of the selective breeding for certain features, there is no way they could survive in the wild. I see GM as just a short cut in the selective breeding process. I imagine that those 10% of fish that can breed will be eagerly snatched up by breeders, and within a few year, almost all of the glowing zebra's will be breedable. Does this make the fish any different than those that are selectivly bred for features? IMO, no it doesn't.

This is pretty minor compared to the feature that have been bred into goldfish over the years. Some of those fish, IMO, look terrible, and all suffer from problems related to their breeding.

Perhaps I am one of the few Civil Engineers who find myself reading /. So +karma to the editors for bringing this article. I still would like to know how it removes the concret and doesn't dammage the rebar. When you start getting aligator cracking in concrete roads, water has more than likely reached the rebar, rusting it. Some newer road specs require that the rebar be coated with epoxy. This cuts down on rust, and may allow for rebar reuse in the case stated with the article. --C. Alan, PE
