Wiki has a lot of moderation throught the way it was designed. Anyone can contribute, anyone can commit vandalisme and anyone can undo vandalisme (it has an undo button in a sense). I contribute regulary to wikibooks and vandalisme turns up once in a while and is fixed practicly immediatly. Till now it hasn't been much of an issue. Ofcourse I'm not going to post a link to any book I contribute too as a large number of people vandalising the same page after each other can be a problem.
Fusion doesn't "exist" yet. People have no "experience" with it and still have the ideal image of it, same image nuclear fission had, before it became a daily reality.
Thing is fussion has its issues, and people will run into them, but not until we have a few working nuclear fusion power plants. I suppose by then, fussion will be seen as being just as evil as fission is now.
Currently the idea is that fussion wouldn't need nuclear materials like uranium and plutonium, just harmless hydrogen. Instead of nuclear waste it produces helium, which most people know as harmless ballon filling. Most people don't know that the fussion reaction produces fast neutrons which can activate other materials.
I'll bet that when fussion becomes mainstream the anti-nuclear activists will use the fast neutrons and their activating of other materials as an angle of attack.
Such nuclear "waste" contains plutonium. Recycling it requires to "enrich" it and even though it wouldn't be pure enough for nuclear weapons (and would be mixed with new nuclear fuel), the process COULD be used for a nuclear weapon program. And we don't want the US to have The Bomb, do we?
It's funny than our (Belgian) nuclear waste is recycled in France and reused. Yet the country that was first to develop practical nuclear technology doesn't.
I always wondered why people always insist that I should spend more time on stuff I don't care nor like instead on the things I like doing. Why should I waste my spare time doing things they like?
"Right to create games"? I'll decide what games I buy and which not. I don't like it if some moral-ubermensh is going to tell what I can and can't buy. Those people don't have any right to decide any aspect of my life. So if you don't like violent games, you don't buy them. If you don't want your kids to play them, don't let them. Take responsibility yourself instead of trying to force your morals up on everyone. If you can't take that responsibility then don't have kids. Wouldn't hurt the gene pool.
IMO this shows exactly what kind of people they are. I wouldn't be supprised if many of them would silently shuckle if a game developer would become a victim of violence. They just want their 15 minutes of fame to last as long as possible.
I've been playing violent games for years and I've never used it in real life. Yet look at how much violence happens after a soccer contest.
They could have set up a regulation about the convertion. They get payed enough and have sufficient support staff to figure out how to convert without having costumers screwed and taking normal prices variation in account. Which they completely failed to do.
IMO by not protecting the costumer they've done a great deal of damage to any future EU additions for a long time.
The real reason why people voted against the constitution is because we got screwed when they introduced the euro. All those asshats in the government swore that everything would cost the same after the introduction. Right. Most things got at least 1/4 euro more expensive. And then those assholes are supprised people don't trust them anymore. Sheesh. It's not because the constitution is not as good the US constitution, most people don't even know what's in it, it's because people don't trust the government anymore when it comes to new european stuff.
I disagree. If colleges and universities can't provide a training that fits with the needs of the industry, then they aren't doing what they're supposed to do.
That would be redundant, wouldn't it. Mind control technology has been succesfully used for years now. At this point the do-nothing-loop mind control feature (codename Slashdot) is working almost perfectly. More features will be added over time.
What's wrong with a few extra nukes? IMO the US can build as many nukes as they want. Pu is a great fuel for nuclear power plants, let the DOD pay for it, leaves less money for invading, euh, liberating any axis of evil they've left. And beside who are they going to nuke anyway? Don't think Al Quaida has a capital.
ok, I think I proved I'm not in classical music. I did indeed meant Beethoven.
Point is that his genetic defect that caused his hearing loss at later age might as well have some effect on how he percieved sound throughout his life.
You could talk about freedom and democracy as much as you wanted in Soviet Russia. Those nice people of the party even arranged special meetings for all those who were intrested in dicussing this. These meeting were hold constanly all throughout Siberia. Many people enjoyed these meetings for the most part of their life. In fact most of them never went home!
I don't think we're that far. If you've ever seen how complex the human brain is, I think you can say we're still a long way from a real thinking mind. The human brain is a very complex system, we've just been able to build the building blocks of it. We're more likely to build an insect-like brain first (is it wrong to kill an insect?) and more complicated brain structures later, however something as complex of the human mind will be something for the far future.
Perhaps the real question will be "Should I be allowed to better any physical characteristic of my unborn child?". I doubt there would be any concern about correct real genetic defects which lead to serious disabillities. However what about genetic defect that lead to brains like those of Einstein? Or would Mozard have been able to write better or worse music if he's deafness would have been prevented before he was even born? Would Mozard have been willing to sacrifice his succes for the ability to hear?
On the other side: should a scientist be allowed to increase the potential of his brain if that would better his work? Could an atlete use such means to better his abilities?
Key is that such thing will be available, probably even within our lifetimes, if we like it or not. And probably this will go the same way as abortion and plastic surgery. If the US/Europe bans it, those who want it (and can affort it) will go to South-America/Former USSR states.
There is a particular movie that shows where this could lead, I'll post its title after I got my memory upgrade.
Perfect revenge:
1)Note the names of every assho^H^H^H^H^HPolitician who voted for this.
2)Join the Gesta..., euh, FBI.
3)Serve said politicians a nice spoonfull of their own medicine.
4)Don't forget to videotape them.
5)Wait, while this shit is voted back out of excistance.
6)Sell the DVD.
7)Profit!
It would be unconstitutional, so how about a vote-for-spanking? Let the people vote who should receive a nice additude correcting spanking.
2 words: tech demo.
grammatical? Shouldn't that be spelling rather than grammar? :-D

Flamebait? Guess the French don't have a sense of humor.
We'd win both ways. If it works, we've got our first fusion reactor. Otherwise, well, who would miss France anyway?

I guess they'll appriciate all the extra spam you're sending their way.
brilliant! Then They will try to get that patent revoked with their prior art. And doing so expose themselves! Just brilliant!

I'm not so sure about that.

You see, while they'll get infinitly smarter, they'll be just as empty headed as before.

Common, you're on slashdot, that on its own means at least 55% of your brain has nothing to do already.
