"All that gridding and normalization has destroyed the integrity of the original data, which has been "lost" somehow."
Here is the raw data, go and do some calculations and get back to us if you find a trend that significantly deviates from the accepted 0.14degC/decade.
"Revelation"??? - The reason Mann excluded the late 20th century tree ring record is fully explained in his Nature paper, I might add that the paper in question has recieved more scrutiny than any other I can think of for the last 50yrs simply because psudeo-skeptics have tried to paint it as the sole basis for AGW.
As many posters have said about the IPCC, you should try checking the primary source to find out if your adopted claims are factual or political.
There are four volumes in the report, the report of which you speak uses "grey material" from goverment, industry and private sources that cannot be found anywhere else. In this case they used a government source for the percentage of land below sea level, unfortunately the Dutch govt got it wrong but that is about impacts and has nothing to do with the science. The scientific volume (WG1) only uses peer-reviewed sources and nobody has yet pointed out any errors in WG1, in fact the people who pointed out the 2035 error were contributors to WG1.
Note the prominent link directly above the reports to their statement about the 2035 mistake. The IPCC is widely recognised by scientific institutions as one of the most robust peer-review exercises ever conducted and it has been forthright about recognsing it's mistake but if your expecting perfection from a large bunch of humans over a 20yr period you will be dissapointed.
Thanks WindBourne, I didn't think it was possible to do it with a single bore, you taught me something interesting today.:)
The pilot sites here in Oz have been drilled in granite since the weak radiation basically gaurentees a 2000M deep bore will find tempratures in the 250-350 degC range. Such a site exists below the biggest coal fired plant in NSW and could potentially replace it's output for at least the next 50yrs.
Diamonds will burn at roughly the same temprature as coal, the only "advantage" of burning diamonds instead of coal is that the diamonds contain more carbon atoms in a given volume. Most of the energy that goes into making this new substance is not stored it is radiated away as heat within the first few minutes after it's created.
The abstract of the paper says nothing about energy. As so often happens with science reporting, TFA has taken some interesting research and "sexed it up" with misleading drivel.
You can if you burn them, same deal with this stuff. I also assume that most of the energy that goes into it from the press would radiate away as heat pretty quickly anyway, much the same as when you hammer a nail into wood the head of the nail becomes hot enough to burn your finger. Interesting stuff but totally impractical for "energy storage".
That's a good idea but you need two bores for geothermal, one for the water to go in and one for the steam to come out. The bores are normally seperated by a few hundered meters. Also geothermal works best in granite whereas test bores for oil/gas are usually drilled in shale or sandstone.
"there is no valid [hypothesis, to test, to theory] path, inasmuch as no AGW hypothesis can be described as any more than a projection into the future. Which is why it cannot be said that there is a valid AGW theory."
The health thing is just pure bullshit. There are hundereds of regualted, clean, tax paying brothels in my city, your average bar is more of a health issue than your average brothel.
True humans didn't evolve from birds but birds and humans do have a common ancestor (amphibians?). There are two possibilities here, either mammals and birds evolved the behaviour seperately or they both inherited it from a common ancestor.
"I'm a little tired of people trashing "crackpot" theories, but then being perfectly OK with mainstream religious beliefs which are far more far-fetched than any "crackpot" theory, or at least never saying a word against them"
So many crackpots, so little time. The OP never said he was OK with religous myths, so how about you concentrate on your pet crackpots and let the OP concentrate on his?
On the very few occasion I have had to ring Optus customer service over the last 10yrs they have fixed the problem within 30 minutes (a responsive hope desk is important to me since I work 2 days a week from home). Recently they have started ringing me every 3 months or so just to ask if I'm satisfied with their service. OTHOH I cannot in good faith recommend Optus telephony services to anyone.
Disclaimer: I worked as a contractor on Telstra's "mission critical" systems during the 90's but would not recommend them, even to my worst enemy!
Actually, it's the exact opposoite of your claim in the case of Telstra. Prior to the recent NBN deal the government(s) (both left and right) had been engaged in a very long and public feud with Telstra over their anti-competive wholesale fuckery.
While I think Penn and Teller are very funny, I do realise that they are both fellows of the Cato instiute. The Cato institute is a Libertarian think tank founded by Koch industries and funded by corporations to put out misinformation and propoganda about smoking, environmentalisim, etc, etc. As I said I think they are funny and I enjoy their act but it IS bullshit.
Pack-a-day smoker for 35yrs here, you are completely missing the point of smoking bans. It's not a freedom issue, it's a public health issue. Sure I should have the right to do unto my body as I wish but I should not have the right to adversely affect other people's lungs. It took me quite a while to accept that second hand smoke in a confined public space is not only annoying to the majority of people but downright dangerous to people with respritarory problems such as asthma.
These days I have the freedom to smoke but I do not have the freedom to deter respritory sufferers from entering a confined public space, and IMHO that is a GoodThingTM. Many bussinesses have gone out of their way to set up comfortable outdoor areas for me to smoke without affecting others, if smoking bans were to be universally lifted tommorow I would still go outside the resturant to smoke as a matter of common courtesy to others.
Freedom is a great thing but when everyone is free compromise is essential.
The GG sacked the Whitlam government in Australia during the 70's and installed the the oppsition as caretaker, technically Whitlam could have sacked the GG if he had of moved first. The reason for the sacking was a situation similar to California's problem, ie: parliment couldn't pass a budget and Whitlam refused to call an election. Whitlam did some good things but refusing to call an election and then perpetually whinning about the sacking during the forced election campaign was just dumb.
"unfortunately these individuals who are doing this think it is a religious right to have sex with minors"
Ahhh, I forgot about Utah's reputaion for those sort of cults. I agree there is a link between religious cults and pedophilia, Mohommed, Catholic priests, fundementalist mormons,...,the list is a long one indeed!

Insightfull but misleading.

Hammering screws only works well on softwoods such as pine, hardwood will just split.

"Time dilation has been observed in a number of different contexts"
Indeed! Without taking time dialation into account GPS locations would systematically drift about 10km/day.
I'll second that, OP is not a troll just an uncomfortable truth.
The New York attitude comes the closest, he was born in the US but thanks to political cartoonists most Aussies think he's from Mexico
"all [Optus} have to do is match Telstra, to the point Telstra and Optus offer the worst deals in the country."
Optus actually have much better deals (and customer service) than Telstra...
Optus.....20mbps/512kbps, 170GB cap, $70/mth
Telstra...10mbps/512kbps, 50GB cap, $90mth.
iiNet......24mbps/1024kbps, 120GB cap, $60/mth.

"Could someone please explain how this would actually work in practice?"
There will now be three big red buttons on the president's desk; "Nuke", "Net" and "Nurse" (installed during the Reagan era).
"Wait a minute, is this the USA or North Korea I'm living in?"
If you are in NK you won't see this reply.
"Parliament decides who the Prime Minister will be"
In theory yes, in practice the minning industry chose our new PM.

I once saw an interview with bones where he said he wanted the words "I'm dead Jim" engraved on his grave stone.
