  1. Re:They call it Low-K Dielectric on Intel: Metal in Future Chips = Less Leakage (updated) · · Score: 1

The copper isn't the low-k dielectric, the dielectric is what is in between the copper wires, it is what determines capacitance (and actually is should be called high-k). Using copper over aluminium reduces the resistance of the wire, but using a low-k dielectric lowers the capacitance, both of which make things faster.

So if RFID tags can get rid of the check out procedure at stores that is bogus and an infringement on my privacy? Hey, if I can just walk my cart up to a register, scan my credit card and be off without having to take the stuff out, bring on that bogus infringing stuff man!!! I'll just go home and throw out the boxes and labels.

Does it really matter that they banned Segways on sidewalks? Is anyone going to actually buy one of these things? I remember when I thought something like this would be cool, I was 12! All the inconvience of a bike, but none of the exercise!

Yeah, but I've never leased a car and was told I had unlimited milage, then a few years later they say now you can only drive 10,000 miles a year.

I think they say this every year. "It's going to be good this year, don't miss it...", I've seen it the last 3 years and it is impressive, but hasn't been 40/min yet. Who knows, maybe this will finally be the year.

That's not true, good quality at a low bit rate (relativly) comes from multiple passes. You can get a fine looking picture with a single pass, you just use a constant bit rate and throw lots of bits at it, you can't expect an optimal encoding in real time.

  7. Re:Evil ESD on Lightning Rods for Nanoelectronics · · Score: 1

Ummm, none of these articles are about ESD, they are about soft errors, caused by cosmic rays or radioactive compounds (usually in the lead in solder bumps). These don't cause any permanent damage to the circuits (unlike ESD can), just cause data corruption (if there is no mechanism to detect and correct errors).

Back when I was work for HP designing PA-RISC uprocessors I got to spend a weekend at a "facility" in Leadville Colorado (>10,000ft elevation, more cosmic rays up there) to measure soft error rates in the large caches of the PA-8700. Note, I say "facility" because it looked like a building that should have been comdemned, until you went inside and there was all kinds of computers and cosmic ray counters, but no AC, so it got damn hot! And we actually did see some soft errors.

I thought you paid for cable to get more/better quality channels, no more moving the antenna around and standing in strange positions to get the channel to come in. Most stations that are on cable are not owned by the cable companies, so they have a right to put commercials on so they can pay for all the good shows you watch. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that sometimes (ok, most times) they go over board with the commercial to show ratio and I hate the idea of popups, but you can't blame the cable companies/tv stations for wanting people to watch commercials, so if a company like Digeo wants to sell their boxes to cable companies, obviously they are not going to have commercial skip/etc stuff.

I think the box being rented from the cable companies is one of the best features. If you want to do all the modifications, shut up and buy a tivo, but I imagine a lot of people wouldn't want to shell out all the money up front and would prefer to rent one from the cable company (who also would replace it if it breaks or when a better one comes out).

As for the stuff about commercial skipping/internet video sharing/etc. What is wrong with the cable companies trying to make money? Jeez, they are businesses who like to make money too. Commercials and pay-per-view bring in money, if people are skipping the commercials, then the advertisers will stop buying time. Commercials have been around forever, that's why we have the up/down channel button!!!! If you really hate commercials that much, stop watching TV!!!!
