  1. Re:The real difference on First Look at Libranet Linux 3.0 · · Score: 2, Interesting

That also raises the question (or repeats it): What does it offer for $90 that you can't get for free from Ubuntu, Mepis, Knoppix, Kanotix, or other Debian based distros. As of now, there is no way I could justify paying for their earlier versions. With the easy setup of other Debian distros, I don't feel I could justify $90 for Libranet. It took me all of 20 minutes to get Java (including plugins for Firefox), Flash, mdadm (for raid), and nVidia drivers to work on two systems, when I installed them both at the same time, with MEPIS. Compare their $90 to the cost of any other distro. I just don't see how I could justify $90 for Libranet. $30 or $40 maybe, but not $90 when it really doesn't offer much more than Ubuntu or Mepis. One deciding factor for me was learning it was based on Ubuntu packages, since there are questions about how Ubuntu packages get along with Sarge packages.

I guess it comes down to a question of value for your dollar. Can anyone tell me what Libranet offers that makes it worth $90 when you can get almost any other distro for free and, if you like it, pay after testing it?

Hmmm. Must have been a conservative that modded it down. While he had some interesting info, he added his own opinion. If there's one thing a conservative can't stand, it is someone else's opinion. Now watch, and this will get modded to troll too, because some other conservative will see it and be unable to take the criticism.

The key word is "corporation." That says it all. If you're in a corporation large enough so the top person doesn't personally know all the employees, then it's a company that doesn't care about anything but making money. All marketing will care about is getting data and putting propaganda out there so the company makes money. Making money also means getting a job done quickly, so fewer man hours are involved. They don't want to hear a better way. They don't want a simpler way. They've got a method in place so, by definition (and because of their egos), their method is "right." If you don't like what they're doing, go out and start your own business, build it up, and lead by example. And see if, in 10-20 years, you don't find yourself more concerned about the budget and profits than right and wrong. It's the way all big corporations think.

I know Carl Sagan and Arthur C. Clarke, as well as Robert Heinlein were all inspired by the "John Carter of Mars" series, by Edgar Rice Burroughs -- although a bit cheesy, his books inspired a generation of scientists and science fiction writers. It's surprising to see that almost all of today's geeks missed the humor in seeing the name John Carter in this story. I guess geeks, intelligent as they are, have a very short sense of history of geek culture and its roots. Sigh......It's nice to see one reference to the Warolord of Barsoom.

The author of this post may not have said it well, but he has a point, which is strengthened by the responses to this post and the fact that he was modded down. He has done the unfortunate deed of speaking the truth. The fact that he was modded down and that so many people have jumped on him just shows how "spoiled" (his word for it) many of us are and how we cannot look at our selves honestly. Instead of listening to what he says (and, as I said, he did not find the most tactful way of putting it), we call him a jerk and tell him to shut up. It is true that the topic asked about what kinds of gifts we got, but if you look at the poster said in the topic, it does seem like he is too busy complaining about what he doesn't like instead of letting it fly and focusing on the good things he has -- like a job at a company that is doing well enough to be able to afford a Christmas party. Perhaps if he had started the post with "I know someone will say I'm just a troll for saying this, but I think this story was posted by someone who is showing just how spoiled he is," then maybe people would have listened, instead of trying to just dismiss him because what he has said it too painful for many of us to hear. (As my cousin, a social worker, would say, perhaps some people are in denail that this person has actually described their own behaviour and they cannot deal with that.)
