    Remember that "Stable" doesn't mean that it's not crashing (though this is an effect), it means that the release is no longer a moving target and they are only applying bug fixes.

    Hmm, I recall reading that Apple was operating iTunes at a loss- since the record lables collected all of the purchase fee. That it existed only to drive iPod sales.

    This is why for months now there have been all those articles from people advising Apple to cheaply license Fairplay so that other companies can pimp the iPod for them.

    Except in this case, if you actually re-distribute the code, you are penalized for availing yourself of your rights.

    It's really not a restriction though. It's a bribe.

    They aren't even asking you to waive your rights- they're just offering a reward for volunteering not to excercise them.

    Unfortunately, that means that the existing heavyweights (AOL, Microsoft, etc) lose a hell of a lot of control, so they are unlikely to support it.
    But what do they lose, really? These companies gain back server time and bandwidth they have been using for essentially free services.

    I admit to not knowing who this guy is. For dodging the mock debate I say kudos to him, but announcing this to everyone will deprive the world of some much needed laughs.

    Image if someone had forwarned Scott Richter. Or the lady who stuffs dead pets for their owners. Or the guy who was upset because his "Sim-Kitten" had died.......... All of these memories will disappear like tears in rain!
